Road Cycling

I went with Squirt because i'm immature (and it seemed to be highly rated)

I recently used a drip wax which I really liked so I have just gone all in on some proper wax melt and a spare chain so I can treat one and have another on the bike at all times. Seems like in the long run it saves time and money if it prolongs your drivetrain and you aren't constantly putting more lube on a chain.

You don't need a crock pot either, just use the bag it comes in and sous vide that bad boy.

Mind you, I've just found it's only the 30T that is that cheap. The 34T is £58.50... and out of stock on Wiggle.
I ordered an 11-32 just before posting here yesterday, which was £38 at the time at Merlin (now I see it's increased to £40, like some other options), along with a few other bits.

I only discovered and tried 11-34 for 11-speed around the start of the pandemic, only a 2T range increase, but a very welcome swap to 2T jumps at the high speed end for more climbing ratios plus a welcome easier 34/34 gear for super steep ramps and/or dead legs. Tried both the Shimano HG700 (105) version and the Miche version https://www.merlincycles.com/miche-primato-light-cassette-11-speed-228242.html , both as good as each other.

One thing possibly in Miche's favour is all sprockets might be separate, so you can fully customise the sprockets you want, I'll try and remember to report back if that applies to the three biggest sprockets when I remove the cassette off my semi-broken Direto turbo (Shimano bond the biggest three together iirc).

Has anyone here tried the Tifosi HG 11 cassettes that are super cheap, having fitted a new chain at the same time? https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/tifosi-hg-11-speed-cassette/rp-prod211381

I tried to do a search, so dont hang me for asking!

Whats everyones preferred lube choice? Im just starting to read up / watch on Zero friction cycling test results, ive just ordered some Tru Tension Banana slip Tungsten stuff to try, wondered what everyone else was using?
I’m bought in to the Silca wax, both the hot melt variant and topping up with the bottle stuff. Name escapes me.

Excellent results in terms of cleanliness and wear so far. Don’t expect it to be quiet though!

So I think this is the issue for me to consider

Inside on the turbo I want the quietest one I can (thats reasonable cost) as any noise reduction is very welcome there.

Outside; noise is less of a worry mainly just want the most efficient and cleanest / easiest to maintain for good DT heath.

Ill see how i get on with this stuff ive ordered. Currently the Muc off C3 ceramic was quite and clean on my Turbo rides - but seems most data stipulates the muc off stuff is all ****

10 weeks to the Fred Whitton challenge and... I have covid for the third time. No Fever etc just a head cold and cough at the moment so hopefully it stays this way and I can get on a return to play protocol and back to training within 2 weeks!

Done!

Although i was too lazy to get up this morning to actually take it for a maiden ride!

Also, capturing the cleanest this will ever look!

Looking good. Are you going to trim the fork steerer once you’ve dialled in height etc?

Based on your location, Ocuk group ride round Bowland on the cards? :-)

nice - finally get to see the derailleur in situ - did you need to play with height of front RD, or instructions say what the arm chain ring gap should optimally be.
personally had a new chain day yesterday ... I always take a couple of links out, and played with FD height, too - yours looks close to wrapping.

I did that route last week (kind of), not sure i ever want to do it again! After the brutal Jeffrey hill!

Yeah, will likely cut the steerer tube when i decide where i want it.

It's all really easy, Sram has a little marker on the FD to line up with the large chainring and includes a plastic alignment tool too, so it's fairly fool proof!

Just bought a new ultegra 11 speed cassette and chain for £65 delivered from ebay to hopefully fix the noise issue I have with the wahoo kickr trainer. People seem to suggest that the cassette you get with it is a bit **** and can be the cause of the noise problem. Will probably move the 105 cassette from the bike onto the trainer and use the new ultegra on the bike.

105 hasn't done more than a few hundred miles so it should all be OK.

Let me know how you get on, From what ive read a new chain when going to a new turbo cassette sees good results so they can wear at the same time.

I recently got a Zwift Hub, and the new cassette and old chain from my bike are a bit noisy too in combination. Going to look at a new chain soon and see how that goes. Going to check the wear on mine later now that Amazon delivered my Chain wear Gauge.

Is there a good high street store that has a good stock of cycling shoes?

Mine are some Boardman ones, which seem a bit big for me. As i need to start cycling more following advise i can't run for a while it makes sense to get a better fitting pair of shoes to avoid aggravating my foot injury, but it's a bit of a minefield to know where to look!

Merlin is close by, maybe my best shot?

Will do. The current groupset on my bike is quiet on the road and the whole thing hasn't done very many miles. I think its just a bit of a crappy quality cassette that they give you with the trainer. Hopefully anyway.

Are you looking to get a good fit or good value for money? I have just ordered a couple of pairs of lakes from sigma sports to try on because they were discounted and sigma have a good returns policy. There is a shop near me with loads of shoes but I don't want to pay full price because thats a lot of money and I don't want to be the dick that tries on loads of shoes only to go and buy them online.

Probably a bit of both, i don't *really* want to spend >£100, but at the same time, even ordering a few pairs can't always get there.

I was watching a Youtube of a bike fitter in Australia who mentioned having about 700 pairs of shoes for people to try on. That obviously would be ideal, but not realistic! Merlin has a pretty big range and usually well priced, so that's in my favour, but there's not that many sub £100

I was fitted with a pair of Lakes from my bit fitter including insoles and some adjustments to cleats with some wedges. £250 for the shoes, 37.50 for the insoles... expensive? Yes! Worth it? Yes! They fit like a dream and I can do long hard rides and never once think about my feet
