Got to feel sorry for Ukrainian soldiers, Russia apparently send a small group of lads forward, watch them die just to try to find Ukrainian position.
That is basically being treated like your life is completely disposable and worth nothing.

What happened to Ukraine’s ZU-23 Shilkas? They were busy modernising them with improved fire control and air search radar when the Russians invaded.
 
Kind of bad optics on that - one thing to "accidentally" down another countries drone in international air space (albeit Russia claims it closed for purposes of the "special operation") another to do recovery operations at the site and/or put a military presence there.

That's assuming Russia care, which they don't. And assuming they have any reputation to protect, which they don't.

If you assume they are in a total war mindset, damaging opposition intelligence sources makes absolute sense. And, once they've done that, recovering that asset serves a few purposes.

Looking at the video the US will have been able to make the decision to self destruct. Doesn't seem like they lost contact, they just knew it wouldn't be able to make it back. Wonder if the plane was damaged...
