First time doing a bbq!

Had one Wednesday evening, had an old bag of the pre packed, light the bag ones. mine is a cheapo but it does have a good range of Hight levels for the grill.
The common mistakes imho are throwing the food on too early when the coals are still catching and cooking too hot so surface black inside raw.
obviously they are terrible for bowel heath but i reckon the Pinotage will kill me first and i only do maybe 4 bbqs a year
oh yeah and keep it vegan, no need to be a cave man

Buy a chimney starter.
Buy some natural firelighters.
Buy good charcoal.
Put a couple of the firelighters on the grill.
Light them.
Put the chimney on top.
Wait till it looks all hot.
Pour the charcoal into HALF of the bottom.
Sear your meat above the coals (keep a close eye on it)
Move it to the other side to finish with the lid on.

Something like that :D
The chimney starter looks great. I have checked a few videos online and they advise with the starter you don't need the firelighters. Do you still use the firelighters with the chimney?

Thanks, this is very handy information. I know to some, it's just common sense, but I've never done it before and what better way to learn, than asking those who actually do it. Many thanks.
I mean you could have just googled this instead of asking here?

Or better yet, use chatgpt

Couple of pages of newspaper rolled up and stuck underneath should do the job. If you must use firelighters, get the wood wool ones, not the nasty white chemical blocks that make your food taste like cancer.

You lot are going to hate me, but after years of having summer bbqs this year I went out and bought an electric one

Heats up in seconds, stays hot, easy to clean

Not sure why they call them electric bbq, basically an electric outside grill

and yes....I am very lazy :D

I don't think it's my imagination that charcoal makes the food taste better. I find it's worth the faff. But it is a faff! :D

I'd second those chimneys. They make the hardest job (getting it going) much easier.

Why not ask it here. This is a forum yes? A place to discuss things. No point in having these forums open now, if you think questions should be googled or asking AI.

Where has the art of discussion gone?

This thread has sparked some experience, advice, ideas, stories etc.

Wait, am I the only one who uses petrol to light their coals? It's so much easier!

I use a chimney when just doing a small BBQ, but when I'm cooking all day I dump the coal out, nestle in a block of fight lighters, pour petrol over and chuck on a match.

Must have done about 5 BBQs in the last 2 weeks. Keep it simple myself. Weber, chimney, Big K coals.

Plenty of burgers, sausages, kofta, kebabs etc. Will fire it up again later. Oh and put your lids down you neanderthals.

You forgot the wings and hot sauce - and you accuse US of being the neanderthals?

Because it's such a basic question to ask in Google.

The op couldn't even do a search on this forum to find out that there is a dedicated BBQ thread...

Yes!

We made a production line with the kids over the weekend for some home made burgers, kofte, souvlaki, and steaks.

We've been having bbqs pretty much for the past 3 weeks straight. Feels like being back home

If you use newspapers, make sure they have Boris and other politicians and celebrities you hate on it. For the childish way to see them burn.

I've done about 6 bbq myself. Lovely time to do it

I'm using a lot of the logs with some charcoal that I didn't use over winter as I have too many for my log store - been doing pizza on the bbq (with a pizza stone) which has been really enjoyable!

Home made so not the prettiest, but the kids love it!

Unfortunately moonman won't like it as that's mozzarella
