It's easier to imagine an FSB officer holding his family near a window. How would our opinions suddenly change with a threat like that looming over us.

I was thinking about rapid dragon again and then realised how ridiculously easy the concept would make nuclear first strikes, it's scary

If you didn't know, rapid dragon is a system that allows you to if you want, pre program a bunch of long range cruise missiles with targets, then pack them into these deploying crates and put them on a cargo plane, fly over the target and release the kraken. The concept allows a large cargo plane to carry 50 long range JASM missiles in the crates. So if someone wants to get in an early first strike, you take a commercial plane like a DHL branded cargo plane, stack it with these crates, add nuclear warheads to the missiles, then just fly your cargo plane on a pre approved flight over enemy territory because they think it's just a DHL plane coming to drop off cargo and instead you drop 50 nuclear armed missiles from the sky, let's say you sent 10 cargo planes and you've just dropped 500 nukes from the sky all now flying and within a couple minutes from their targets

Errr…..and what happens to the crew of the cargo plane?

It sounds like a ridiculous weapon concept that the West shouldn't have anything to do with.

While not impossible to fully automate, it wouldn't even need a crew once airborne and on autopilot, though you'd probably have to relay comms as it progresses through different airspace.

Well nothing is impossible if you throw enough money at it but still, you’re a decade away from from converting a cargo plane from being able to do what is described. I think you’re underestimating the complexity of the task. And the huge number of ways it could fail.

A strike of that magnitude would chaos utter chaos, they'd probably be able to just GTFO like every other aircraft.
yeah….no. It sounds like a mission with zero possiblity of survival - still, you can volunteer if you like.

Theres probably a reason the west/NATO has spent untold billions on things like submarine nuclear deterrents, B1 bombers etc etc, and not converting banged up cargo planes to try and sneak nuclear weapons into enemy territory and that reason would be it being a ridiculous idea.

I bow to your greater keyboard general status.....

If a country was intending strikes of that sort, a deepcover operation with portable tactical nuclear weapons in a van or HGV would make a lot more sense.

If proliferation becomes a thing (as it will), this becomes a severe risk.

It's not though. It's the kind of weapon a terrorist state might froth at the mouth to own - but it goes completely against the idea of how the West should be conducting our defence. Just the threat of being able to sneak a devastating weapon system into a civilian aircraft - even if it's not used - makes all civilian aircraft a potential threat and a valid miliary target.

In practice, that is going to be a lot more difficult to carry out than it sounds.

Its very much a logical progression.
Air launched missiles get a massive head start (its why AA missiles are more deadly generally than GA missiles) they are already travelling at speed and height. The height is important since a lot of energy is required to get there.

Plus you also take on more of an element of surprise since your launching already "up to speed" missiles from closer to target.

Whilst not the uber weapon Russia claimed they air launched missiles are still more effective than ground launched.

The described attack was not the "normal" expected way to do this but not impossible.
The RAF don't go up to check every plane approaching the UK is what it claims. With a bit of effort and time you could easily substitute in a military plane for a large civilian transport or passenger plane. Chances to get caught, very low.
It would take deliberate and undeniable dodgy changes but its possible. If you were doing a pearl harbour attack and timing declaration to the same time it would likely be very effective.

I'm surprised they didn't want to tow it off and study it. Maybe it wasn't close enough to their lines to risk it.

They've already towed away an intact operational Mk2 Leopard, this is what the Germans were so hesitant about initially, They don't want the Russians crawling all over these advanced tanks.

Russian tanks are junk level, easy to deal with, not a hope in hells chance on a German battlefield.

The T-14 Armata, that new Russian tank they claim is super high tech, its utter dog poop, its heavier than the T-90, they needed a more powerful power unit, but also compact enough to fit the in the chassis, they couldn't come up with their own design so they used (lol) the Porsche engine from the Tiger 1, there is a documentary on the T-14 Armata somewhere on Youtube, its ###### hilarious.

The irony is the Germans are taking Russias claims about the T-14 very seriously, perhaps because they apparently don't have a sense of humour? :D And designed the Panther KF51 to combat it.
So the Russians claiming they built a super tank caused the German to built an actual super tank.

That's pretty damning given Erdogan enjoyed playing both sides and was very much not critical of Russia and Putin in the past
It may also be a good thing, maybe with Erdogan publicly speaking up about this then some inside the kremlin may see it as a way to oust Putin as they would fear there is no other way out

There are no leaders in Russia. There's a single leader - Putin. How do you put bullets into someone who lives in a bunker and has 50K well paid personal security stuff?
Well there is the Politburo, technically they are the Russian leaders with Putin being top dog so to speak.

Whether enough of them can muster a coup or not remains to be seen but I would imagine they are horrified about the path Putin has taken them down.

But if its getting done from the inside then its them who will do it.

Laserpigs take? Worth a watch for the lols for sure!

Also a tale as old as time.

Russians are all about marketing. The world thought the MIG-25 was hot **** so USA developed the F15, an actual PROPER interceptor.

It was only after a defector gifted the USA one they then found it it was ****, just like all other Russian equipment.
