Totally agree when talking about photos of friends/family etc but say I’m out walking and see a stunning rainbow or sunset, I just don’t even bother if I only have my iPhone. The sun always comes out as a giant blob, the photos look processed to death. ProRaw was a great addition and helps beat the horrific processing done in camera when you’re trying to do proper photography but the images are still flat and look poor compared to Fujifilm RAWs. If we’re not talking about doing proper photography, the 12 Pro Max already has an outstanding camera for a mobile phone for capturing life moments so it seems all I’m getting with the 15 Pro Max is “improvements” to the processing I already don’t like, I doubt the ProRaws will be that much better compared to the 12.
Yep, it's those situations where there's difficult lighting or where you need the flexibility of genuine focal lengths (rather than sensor crops) that a real camera stands head and shoulders above a phone. There's only so much they can do to keep on improving phone cameras year in year out. But then there's shots you just aren't going to get with a dedicated camera system because of portability or accessibility.
I have some Canon DSLR gear which is now long in the tooth and lacking in features like in-body stabilisation. Every year I look at the iPhone Pro line-up and wonder if this will be the year I'll take the plunge and replace my ageing DSLR and old iPhone and have everything in one package. But the reality is that whilst the camera system on the iPhone 15 Pro is undoubtedly impressive, there's too many limitations from a purely photographic sense. Plus there's a whole load of marketing double talk going on surrounding the sensor and apertures etc. There's a good explanation of all this here:

iPhone 15 Pro cameras: MISLEADING & DISAPPOINTING
We're HUGE fans of Apple and the iPhone, but the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max cameras are a huge disappointment. Much of the specs Apple bragged about...
