Hello,

I'm looking to buy my very first AMD PC (I've been using Intel since 1989) and I'd like some suggestions.

This is a possible configuration I have in mind:

Component selection

Case (Case)
Corsair 5000D AIRFLOW Black (CC-9011210-WW)

CPU (Processor)
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8x 4.20-5.00GHz (100-100000910WOF)

Mainboard
MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI (7D75-001R)

Video Card (VGA Card)
onBoard Graphic

System Memory (RAM)
64GB Kingston FURY Beast 5600MHz DDR5 (KF556C40BBK2-64)

Power Supply Unit (PSU)
1000W be quiet! PURE POWER 12 M (BN345) ATX 3.0

SSD
2TB WD Blue SN580 NVMe M.2 (Read 4150MB/s - Write 4150MB/s)

Hard Disc (HDD)
2TB Seagate BarraCuda (ST2000DM008)
Disc Drive (Drive)
No Disk Drive

CPU Cooler (Cooler)
Noctua NH-D15 (842431012456)

Soundcard
onBoard Sound

Case Fan
120mm Default Case Fan
120mm Default Case Fan

W-LAN Unit internal
onBoard WIFI + Bluetooth
Cardreader intern
No Cardreader
Card Upgrades
No Card Upgrade

LAN Card
onBoard LAN
Office
No Office

Operating System (Ready to use installed)
Windows 11 64Bit Professional installed activated digital key (ready to work - without data media)

What I'm not sure about is Motherboard and RAM, do you have any suggestion?
Also GPU will be picked later, undecided between 7800XT or waiting for a sub-300€ deal on 7600XT.

Thank you for any tips!

I've just posted about my new upcoming build, one thing I'd say is to go for a mobo which has PCIe Gen. 5 across the board and not a mix of Gen. 4 / 5, will future proof you in the long run.

For RAM, depends on what you're wanting the PC for, if it's for mainly gaming with some basic office-based workload and some light editing I'd say 64gb is overkill, I'd go for 32gb DDR5 kit with a higher frequency:

I've decided to pair my 7800X3D with the following:
  • Mobo: Asus ROG Strix - B650E-E Gaming Wifi
  • RAM: Lexar Ares 32GB (2x16gb) DDR5 6400mhz - CL32 - You could scale down the 6000mhz kit if you'd rather - This also supports EXPO for AMD.
Also, are you settled on the 1000w power supply? I'm guessing that is already purchased? Seems overkill for the build, especially if you're looking at a 7800xt or an equivalant, you could save some money there and spend it elsewhere, witout delving into it too deep I would say an 850w or even a 750w would be more than capable in your build, but you'd have to check this, potentially run it through PC Partpicker for compatability / system wattage.

If I google the model number it appears to be an Intel XMP 3.0 kit. Is it on the QVL? If not, I'd switch to an EXPO kit.

X3D CPUs aren't particularly bothered about ram speed, so I consider 5600 to be fine, though obviously you'll get higher fps with higher speed RAM (mainlywhen you're CPU bottenecked).

7600 XT would be a weird pairing, I wouldn't bother buying the X3D if that is your plan (a 7500F or 7600 is more than fine).

This is what I built using the 7800X3D. Very compact but powerful system which runs cool and quietly.

Case - Cooler Master NR200P MAX - ITX (includes the below)
  • V850 SFX GOLD 850W SFX PSU
  • 280mm CPU AIO liquid cooler
Motherboard - Asus ROG Stryx B650E-I ITX WiFi

RAM - Corsair Vengeance 6000 DDR5

GPU- nVidia RTX 4080 FE

The RX7800 XT would be a good match as well

To tweak the 7800X3D I set the Platform Thermal Throttle Limit to 75C in the BIOS. Then set the Curve Optimiser to -30 which lowers power, temps and raises the processor speed from 4850MHz to the 5050 MHz hardware limit.

That last bit may be an advanced lesson for you to research after you've built your system :)

Any suggestion on which EXPO kit?
7600XT is the cheap option which is going to be replaced in a few years, this is going to be a 6-10 years build with only GPU and SSD being replaced most likely.

Drop the sn580 for £119.99 and go for below....Read 7400 MB/s, Write 6500MB/s, TBW 1500, 5 Year Warranty as opposed to sn580 Read Speed 4150mb/s, Write Speed 4150mb/s, 900 TBW.
If you can find the ram @w00dy85 has for £217, go for that. seen the corsair vengeace 64gb 6000c30 for £223 away as backup.... tighter timings better for fps rather than speed

I have b650e-e with my 7800x3d...cheaper is the b650f gaming if you want gen5 gpu/ssd also, but you loose bits compared to the gaming e....just gen 5 m.2 slot for future nvme, the asus tuf gaminf wifi for £169.99 can't be beat for price...pcie4 for gpu and nvme the gigabyte b650 gaming x ax for 189.95 here on OCuk...seen it for £169.99(same price as the tuf board at same place seen the corsair 6000c30. Think the tomahawk board to expensive for what you get, unlike the b550 version for am4 which was cheap so you got good bang for your buck)
as for cooler, i have an arctic a35 argb air cooler on mine..doesn't draw a lot of power so doesn't require huge cooling...dark rock pro5 is overkill when a £40 will do the job..mine runs silently except when i stress test it and all fans fire up

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £113.99 (includes delivery: £3.99)

Not that the 7800X3D needs much cooling, but the Zalman CNPS20X is probably the best tower option. It’s at least on par if not better than a Noctua d15.

ps120se would probably be a better option, and cheaper
IIRC the best air coolers on the market are those:

In theory the both cool more than the classic DH-15S but I'm looking for something that will reliably last 10+ years so I'm not sure I want to risk.

Have seen the reviews and the fc140 is half the price of the Corsair with a few more dB of noise...but the ps120se is cheaper again for a couple more degrees of heat. At 1/3 of the price of the dh15 you could buy three and just replace them if for some reason you would ever need to!
