Road Cycling

Need to dig out all my gels from storage. Saturday was just under a 3hr ride and i only had a piece of toast before setting off and then a bottle of water and was really struggling after around 2 hours. Need to buy a second bottle mount and then get some carbohydrate drink powder i think and some snacks.

My problem with snacks is if i have anything tasty i eat them in the house, and gels i'm never a fan of as they sometimes split in the cupboard and make everything sticky, or get your hands all sticky when having them. I see you can buy refills now for gel pouches so that might be decent.

Annoyingly my chain fell off around 3 miles from home and was proper wedged in place. I propped the bike against a pole and it slipped a bit and scratched the top tube :( Impressed by the paint though. Doesn't look too bad, compared to my Trek mtb where similar happened and it looked like it was dragged down the road behind a car!

Plus side being last week was almost 100 miles which is i think my highest weekly total

I think I'm lucky that my belly gets along with gels. I prefer the SiS ones but the cheap side of me makes myself purchase the High5 ones.

In another episode of 'Junglist clearly hates himself and enjoys torturing himself'... I went to my local Specialized Concept store. Oh dear :D Went under the guise of trying to find a balance bike for our daughter. Usually I'm banned from the shop but my partner was in Cardiff watching the Ice-Hockey so I had an opportunity to go in.

They had a beautiful Enve Melee in there. Lovely bike but not sure if it's £13k nice. The Aethos is very nice in person but the Tarmac SL8 had my attention as soon as I got in there. Spoke to the nice people working there and they think I should go for a size 54 and a longer stem. Mentioned I find my Medium Ultimate that little bit too long when on the hoods.

Now I'm just wishing the year away

Yeah. I'm generally good with all foods from ultra running where you just have to eat whatever is available so exercise whilst munching on a cheese sandwich is absolutely fine for me :D I'm the same re:cost. Usually just keep an eye on HUKD for what's on offer.

Thanks for the update. We have more ammunition now :p

Was looking on the website for the Aethos and found this. Wish i had £5.5k! That colour is spectacular.

That is nice! They had a similar finish but in white for the S-Works SL8 but it sort of looked like curdled milk  More importantly, she said yes!... To my justification of a bike lol. I'm going full dentist...

I feel like deep down I enjoy the bullying!

I've harassed a friend into buying a bike. They have a nice little Ribble on the way, nothing fancy but will be nice to have more people locally to ride with

In other news i have completely lost my bike tool kit. I'm sure i took it up to my parents place but didn't see it when we were packing up to come home. Can't find it in the current rental, didn't see it in the storage unit and my dad can't see it at his place either.

Very annoying as i need to do some work on it. I've not really washed/lubed it since we arrived and it's getting a little noisy. Might buy a multitool for the allen keys to tide me over as not much else i need to work on it.

100%

That's why i'm thinking i buy a small multi tool for carrying on the bike as a make shift set. I don't think i'll need the tool kit anytime soon as don't plan on removing the cassette/cranks.

Having had sight of our Mallorca rides this coming weekend (two of them over 90 miles), while out this weekend I decided to just dive in and buy the really expensive ASSOS bibs. There's no price you can put on a comfortable bum, right? Then I did some searching on how much better the £260 are over the £125 and found a guy with both saying he reaches for the £125 ones when he goes on a long ride... Also, a club mate had been saying he had the £125 and they were his most comfortable bibs, so I went that route... so the way I see it I actually saved myself £135. ( @Junglist you see, if you buy the Tarmac instead of the Enve Melee you've actually saved yourself £5k  )

I need some new bibs, i keep reaching for the Mavic ones you sent me over the Danish Endurance ones i'd bought as they fit much better. Although i'm going to try Siroko as a mid ground before going too expensive.

Awesome post, and good to know not to focus much on specific zones. I didn't know if it was sensible to focus on them as a general training pattern. On that front then, is following a plan even worthwhile, or am i better just trying to get out on a regular basis and getting as much time in the saddle as i can in the week (probably around 3-4x1hr rides) and then at weekends try and get 2-3hr rides each day and building up those weekend rides over time, and trying to target what hills i can.
I mean with me saying 'ignore FTP' was very much my trying to tell you not to focus on it too much... But you'll need an FTP value if you're doing any kind of structured training which will use power values, even the endurance stuff as they'll use it to guide the zone to be in... So if you are 'doing a plan' you'll need to get a test done and get it accurate.

But time in the saddle and longer rides need to be balanced alongside any short power structured rides. A 1 hour ride at near threshold on the turbo is quite different to the 3+ hours at a mixture of intensities on the 'real roads' you need to be doing. They'll both 'help' but really you should be doing both of them alongside each other to build. The power side all about zones and managing your efforts. Pushing your top (FTP) up will benefit the lower zones (you'll travel further & faster for less effort). The longer stuff about building a solid base the other stuff benefits from - so you'll more easily spend longer times in the saddle. Core strength and conditioning alongside getting a good comfortable relaxed position helping you just as much (less effort to travel further for longer periods). It's really all a crazy balancing act which only you can find out how to do.

Definately fuel more. Remember you're not really fuelling for the 'current riding' on the bike, but more for what is coming up after. So eating before (or very early in a ride) for what you need during for the next hour. Also like eating even when close to home at the end for recovery. Avoids less of a 'slump' to your glucose levels so you're not at rock bottom when the ride is over and you're trying to do other stuff.

Do it! Finally ordered mine on saturday... Well the SL7 anyway.

Brief timeline from when I started the whole thing 5 WEEKS AGO. Seriously took far too long but there we are... All the effort really to get a deal and to keep my business local.

Price when I had settled on the SL7 Comp (the Expert not worth the extra and hard to get stock of) £3999. Two different colour options - White writing on a slate black, or 'Pink' on a slate grey. I went for the white.
LBS had it in stock, shipped it to my local. Was meant to be built. Wasn't. Ordered several changes anyway (narrower bars, wider saddle, shorter cranks) so figured easy to swap before they did.
Built it with original parts not my changes. As it came 'built' (it didn't ffs!) I then have to buy it as that and pay for my changes. Knocked £150 off the price.
Their website price for the Black/white goes up to £4250. Out of Stock on Specialized. Their website price for Grey/pink drops to 3450. Bear in mind they'd not given me a total price yet for the bike+build.
Specialized prices all settle on 4000. Black/white in my size out of stock. Sigmasports drop the Grey/pink to 3176. Discussion over me then riding a pink one to save myself over a grand!
Talking in store, closest they can get is 3800. Not good enough for me, give them until the end of the day before I order from Sigma. Hear back, they come down to 3400 as it's me... Sounding better... Bundle in the saddle as part of that... Ok, but I have to do the changes/upgrades myself. Placed my order. Phew! Considering the Saddle deal and them price matching Sigma for my upgrades I'm paying £125 to NOT ride the pink one (which isn't all that bad a colour really)

Guy at the shop agrees that the 3150 is an absolute steal of a price for it - https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Specialized/Tarmac-SL7-Comp-105-Di2-Road-Bike/10KUH

You're basically getting this https://www.specializedconceptstore.co.uk/product/80891/2022-tarmac-sl7-expert/ with 105 on it and alloy wheels for ~1500 off the price. Wheels are pretty average on the Comp, but worth selling unused for £200-300

I don't know which Assos ones i have, about £125 sounds right and I can't imagine they get much more comfortable. I'm tempted to try Siroko as have heard very good things.

Well my list, assuming I've got it all right, comes to just under £7000 and I have a friend who is willing to buy my bike for £1500 so new bike with a bit of man-math dancing around comes out £5500ish maybe even less if I change some parts that aren't necessary (Dura Ace chain and brake rotors)

S-Works Tarmac SL8: Size 54 - £4750
Roval Rapide Bars: 110/400 or 110/420 - £475
Ultegra Di2: 52/36, 165mm, 11-34 - £1349 (though this is with a 105 cassette on Sigma)
Di2 Cables: 1200mm + 600mm - £53
Dura Ace BB - £60
Supacaz bartape - £27
MagCad Wahoo Bracket - £31
Bike Build £225

Just a copy and paste from my notes. Still, it's likely to be an Autumn thing, at best, but if I see any deals throughout the year I'll grab them as and when I see them.

Take a banana and eat properly beforehand.

3 hours is only just getting into territory where you need to fuel, depending on intensity.

Yeah. I was fine up to about 2 hours so with a small something to top up I’d have been fine.
Think only having 1 small water bottle was the bigger factor as was around 23C, but just fitted my other bottle rack.

Although I’m currently eyeing up those Fidlock bottles and mounts. They look sweet!

check https://www.certini.co.uk/ for frames and parts. they tend to do some good sales.

my mate got his Sworks aethos frame and other bits from them

There's actually a Certini right next to the concept store but they always look closed. It's only 10 minutes from me so I'll pass by soon
oh, and what wheels for it @Junglist ??
can't have cheap wheels on bike like that.
I've got a set of Zipp 404 Firecrests. Not the all singing all dancing 454s but I don't think they'd look too out of place on it
He's got some Zipp ones i think which i assume he's keeping. Decent pedals too which i guess keeps the build cost down a little.
Yep, keeping the wheels and my Assioma pedals. Along with my AliExpress saddle  Was tempted to get the Power Mirror printed one but it seems it only has a life of 3years. Think I'll stick to my Chinese carbon lol.

But I think I've included everything I needed. Actually, I'll need to find a front light solution because I wont have my Canyon front light any more. But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Interestingly, i was doing some reading last night to see how much faster i might be if i was less fat. It turns out the answer is not much at all.

I guess the hope is that weight loss can be combined with increased fitness/power which then combine to result in a faster speed, but purely weight loss alone doesn't make much difference, certainly not unless chasing marginal gains at the top end.
