It's better in games for sure. I have gained quite a few FPS.

1% lows will be far better going to a 5700x3d and almost every game will see a decent boost (there are a rare few that don't respond much to x3d like Witcher for some reason).

If you can get a decent return on the old processor and spend <£80ish on the swap you'll have a much better gaming experience. I found the 5700x3d also runs quite cool (lower than the 5600x I had) and haven't pushed CO to the limits yet.

The upgrade from a 5800x to 5700x3D only cost me net a tenner and I found the benefits are, it uses 30-40w less power and runs 20c cooler in games, avg fps was slightly better and 1% lows were much better.
 
Since DDR4 is so cheap, I added another 32GB to mine yesterday. It said absolutely no way to 4 DIMMS at 3600MHz though.
Working fine at 3200MHz but need to faff about a bit, to see if it can be dragged kicking and screaming to the faster speed.

Forgot how flaky AM4 was with 4 sticks.

It'll stay on, but not POST. Eventually will safe boot at 2133, so I can get in and mess about.
For the week it'll be 3200MHz, but I'm sure I'll be able to throw some voltage at it to get 3600MHz. That's for the weekend though.

I've found AM4 fine with 4 sticks. Obviously you need a good set to start with and some boards are just too thin sometimes so that introduces issues as well.
5700x3D introduces it's own quirks namely being it doesn't like the IF fabric at 1900MHz so I've had to tweak my bus speeds and multipliers to have it running below that but have 4x8Gb sticks running CL14 at 1887MHz (3775 MT/s).
Although with 3D cache memory speed/timings become less important now. At a minimum you want to run 1:1 on the mem/infinity ideally at 3600MHz. Above that quickly brings diminishing gains.

Can I ask what mobo you have? I'm thinking of getting 4x8gb but not sure whether I will get there. I have a b450m mortar max.

Asrock B550 Steel Legend.
I chose that a very long time ago based on some reviews where it was considered to have a T-topology memory layout which is good for 4 single rank DIMMS but later turns out it's a daisy chain topology. I wonder if some early samples of the Extreme4 (which the Steel Legend is identical to) were T-topology and later changed.

With a 5700x3D I'd not waste too much effort trying to push for absolute max performance edge...just not worth paying the extra for at this point buying new DIMM kits.

I invested in an AIO when I got the 3600 - hopefully it can do the job (NXZT Kraken).

Now that's a sweet memory clock there.
I guess I'll not be helped with it being 4x16gb sticks.
Typically I've found this memory to be decent, especially running it in my other 5700G system. I'm sure with a lot of faffing about, I'll get it playing nicer.

On paper it looks good but in reality with 3D cache I don't think it's a big deal anymore.
Took a good bit of time to dial in settings and didn't notice much of a latency improvement going from CL16 to CL14 (like 1-2ns at most!). I can tweak a bit more but kinda got bored not seeing much gains.
Team T-FORCE DARK Z FPS are single rank which really helps when running 4 sticks. 16gb DIMMS are almost guaranteed to be dual rank so running 4 dual rank DIMMS puts stress on the IMC making them much more difficult to OC as a set.
If you really need 64gb and want to overclock the best option is to run 2x 32gb sticks and only populate half the board. Better stability that way so easier to OC.
 
Absolutely, but 3200MHz will suffice if I can't get it booting at 3600MHz.
I previously had 64GB on my alderlake setup, and have been messing about with more larger language models again. Tanks performance when running anything in system memory, but it's good to have the option.

I could never get my DIMMS faster than 3200 with 4*16; I ended up tightening them from 3600 CL16 to 3200 CL14 so not really a huge difference. Will see if the 5700X3D has a better IMC when it arrives; but doubtful.
 
From my limited understanding the flck seems to be the same from zen2 to zen3. I assume the memory controllers are similar and not the same jump from zen to zen+ to zen2.

The memtest helper guide shows a little less latency. Interestingly:

  • According to Buildzoid, Daisy Chain vs. T-Topology only matters above DDR4-4000. Following Buildzoid's logic, if you're on Ryzen 3000 or 5000, this doesn't matter as DDR4-3800 is the typical max memory frequency when running MCLK:FCLK 1:1.

Just fitted a new cooler, H150i. Seeing higher temps than my old NZXT AIO with only 2 fans and a smaller rad. But I'm getting higher temps than before. Anyone else with this setup? What does your one idle at? I was getting around 40ish, 39 when it's colder indoors. Now it's around 43 or so and up to 48. Still running -30 on all cores. I might re-paste tomorrow to see if it improves.
