Take a look at the following link and look at where the 7900GRE sits and where actual mainstream budget cards (like 3060, 4060, 7600 etc) sit.

It's nvidia's fault. There used to be so little separation between the top 2 or 3 models that it was clear to define high end. Now the gap is so large that people default to saying the rtx4090 is high end and everything under it is mid range lol

Think he means by next generation standards, What do we expect 5060ti / 5060 cards to perform to what's currently available today 4070 ?

AMD didn't specify which market it'll be targeting if it's not targeting mid tier comparable to Nvidia that's me out

About 10% better than the previous generation is about all you get at the budget end. So a 5060 will be equivalent to a 4060ti and a 5060ti might be close to a 4070 if you are lucky.

Certainly far from 7900GRE levels of performance

They matched Nvidia in raster while having worse RT and upscaling and being the customary $50 cheaper, 6800XT $650 vs 3080 $700. I did like the 6000 series though and think AMD would have done well with it had they been able to stick to the msrp but mining ruined that gen and of course Nvidia cards were also better at mining.

The 70 class was traditionally considered midrange and its performance always ranged from 65-80% of the top cards performance.

This gens weird though where the 4070 only has 50% the performance of a 4090 yet some still think of it as midrange but no one would have considered a 6600XT midrange when that had 50% the performance of a 3090.

Lisa has personally acknowledged the issues, glad to see them taking it seriously. If this review was pointless as you suggest, then I don't see why Lisa would personally take time out of her day as well as her team she brought with her to take a look at the results

AMD said they are aiming for close to 4080 in raster and RT. I think early rumours put it between a 7900 XT and a 7900 XTX. Usually you take about 10% - 15% off those claims and that puts it right around 7900 XT. The fact these leaks on pre release drivers show it is right around 4070Ti in raster and RT, means they are likely close to where most expected it to hit.

It’s funny seeing the usual suspects try to push some hype that this thread has never shown, just so they can prove the hype train crashed. It’s laughably ironic. What they claim “AMD promised us a 4080 for $500”. What people in this thread have realistically been expecting “4070Ti equivalent for less than £500 and I would be happy”.

The failed hype train narrative has been being pushed by the same few people since the summer. Yet rumours always pointed at about 25% - 30% faster than a 7800 XT in raster at best, and more lofty unsubstantiated claims for RT.

Have you seen the specs of the 9070 XT before making that comment? It's performance is just as predictable as the perfomance of the 7800 XT and 6900 XT (and for that matter the 6800 XT which has very similar performance to the 7800 XT).

I don't, the 6800 XT has 4608 shaders vs 3840 on the 7800 XT, the latter is 5% faster despite the former having 20% more shaders, that's a 25% difference per shader, they are clocked about the same. Actually the 7800 XT does have 625 GB/s memory bandwidth vs 512 GB/s on the 6800 XT but i'm not sure that matters much at 1440P where i'm measuring this.

With 7% more shaders, 64 CU's vs 60 and 3% more memory bandwidth 645 GB/s vs 625 GB/s about 10% higher performance looks like its on the nose, i agree and i'm not saying that's wrong, all i'm saying it you can't compare one shader to another, the difference in RDNA 1 vs RDNA 2 shaders vs RNDA 3 proves that, RDNA 3 is 2X RDNA 1 for 0.5X more shaders.

If its a 7900 GRE with better raytracing it needs to be under $450.

Too many people here have $1000+ GPU's completely skewing their idea of GPU hierarchy, that and Nvidia pricing structure, the 7800 XT by my experience is a AAA 120 Hz 1440P / 60 Hz 4K card, its high end, just because its not $1000 doesn't make it a low tier card.

I really hate this skewed view some people have :o

That just it. At 4070 ti (or a bit below, as these scores suggest), they could price around ~£450 and still make a dent in market share.

But this is AMD: they'll price it at stupid o'clock (I'm guessing £600 retail) and gain nothing. Polaris repeat in a sense.

Always been my point. Most expectations (but not hype) on performance were between 4070Ti and 4080. It’s right were it was expected for performance. It’s the price that was always in question with AMD.

7800 XT was a flat $500, 7900 GRE / 4070 Ti its at most $450, not a penny more for a new generation, preferably $400, if its more a 7900 XT+ / 4080 $500 is good.
