Which email provider do you use?

Proton. What I particularly like about them are the email aliases. You get a set number of email addresses but an infinite number of aliases. An alias is an email that piggy backs on one of your ten emails. So you basically have different names for the same email. You give stores and other online things a unique alias so they can not identify you by the alias you used on other accounts. They and only they have that one alias and they are never made aware of the email it is piggy-backing on.

I split my email away from my ISP when I realised that the thought of losing email addresses was stopping me move ISP's
You can use the period in googlemail to do this too. john.doe is the same as j.ohndoe. Not quite the same but a useful tip if anyone wants to track whose sold their details.

GMX.com - Managed to get my proper name - so use this for proper email.

Then I have a gmail one as I'm sure most people do.

Yes I have put up with the annual stupid price dance/negotiation with Virgin Media because I didnt want to lose my various emails with them -but its got to the point where I can get a better deal now via City Fibre. Plus got hacked last year courtesy of one of VM's many data breaches. Plus - unless I am being very stupid, you cant change your password with Virgin unless you have a different (non Virgin) email address to use as part of the process or something - its a nightmare. Thye seem to do everything they can to get people to stop using their old Virgin email and they dont allow new ones to be created either.

Waaaaay back before the nuke here my email was with Nildram.

Now it's mostly GMail but I've been using Proton more and more.

What does Protonmail offer that others don't? I know a few who are using it, never really looked into it as I've had my hotmail account for so long it feels like it'd be a big hassle changing now.

I use this trick to get multiple free signups for things. Also @googlemail.com is interchangeable with @gmail.com

I use it for more than just email. I use their email, VPN, cloud storage (Proton drive) and password manager. They have a calendar too but I don't really use that.

They are very privacy focused, don't keep logs and are based outside of the nine eyes countries (not that I'm too bothered by it but some people want that). Unlike Gmail and a lot of other providers they aren't interested in using you or your data to sell advertising or sell to others. If your email provider is free then they are selling your data.

Thanks Hades. Might be worth me looking into Protonmail then. I could do with a password manager tool and cloud storage as I still back up onto mechanical drives, which could be lost if there was ever a fire.

Fastmail (paid) for my main account such as shoppings/bills etc. Then a Gmail address for more casual stuff. I recently set up AOL, Outlook and Yahoo accounts to be used in Thunderbird as a kind of disposal email address to give to someone if I didn't really care about receiving an email from them! :o

I wouldn't say it is a hassle, but it does require some effort. When I changed over to Proton, I forwarded emails to my Proton account, and then took my time setting up new emails to replace the old ones. All the time my old emails kept on working, just being forwarded to Proton. After three months, I shut down ISP's email accounts one by one.

The main motivation for me was to separate my email accounts from my ISP so I could change my ISP a little easier. Problem was, I didn't really trust any of the mainstream suppliers when it comes to email. Not that I have anything of any importance in my emails, rather I don't like targetted advertising, so I like to hide as much activity as I can from the main data collectors like Microsoft, Amazon and Google.
