Gary Lineker to leave BBC's Match of the Day

In what way ? Two women you mean ?

If it was "box ticking" it could and should have been a lot different/worse.

I.e the obvious choice - Alex Scott oh and that "bloke" who plays Dr Who now.....
Indeed. Kelly, Gabby and Mark are more than qualified. It’s a good lineup.

What people often seem to mix up in this debate is the difference between a presenter and a pundit/analyst.

A presenter can come from any background. They don't need to have played the game. They do need to be able to present and get the best out of the pundits who are also on the show. As presenters, the BBC have chosen three individuals with impeccable credentials. Personally I think 3 is too many but of those chosen Logan would have been my personal preference.

A pundit on the other hand is chosen because they offer opinion informed by their experience of the game. Dave from down the pub can easily offer plenty of opinions but people are not that interested in what he has to say because Dave has never played the sport they are watching. Roy Keane as a contrast gets invited on as a pundit because he has played at the highest level and has played the sport people are watching. Roy Keane would not be a suitable pundit to comment on cricket or darts or any other sport. Women who have played women's football at its highest level are not qualified to be a pundit on men's football for the same reason Dave down the pub isn't qualified.

Commentating is a third and mixed scenario. The norm in sports commentary is to have two people. Normally there is a professional commentator. This would be someone in the mold of John Motson. They do not need to have played the game at any level at all. They do though need to have proven themselves first. A woman is perfectly able to fulfil this role, if she has proven her ability and is hired on merit. The "Motty" is normally paired with an expert. The BBC actually differentiate between these roles. The "Motty" is called the commentator and the expert is called the co-commentator. A woman is not qualified to fill this role for the same reason Dave down the pub wouldn't be.

There are some roles in TV football which are suitable to be filled by a woman. There are others which are not. In any role involving men's football the playing history of a woman is completely irrelevant.

It's not rocket science, you seriously think Robbie Savage has some divine understanding of football that no woman can have? Ridiculous.

I think the only reason that Robbie Savage was hired as a pundit is because he had experience of playing at that level. It is isn't because he is a man, it is because he has experience. Dave down the pub might have a better understanding but nobody wants to hear him on MOTD giving "expert" analysis. Dave hasn't played at a high enough level and no woman has either.

Think I would rather hear the thoughts of "Dave down the pub" than Robbie Savage tbh. Got to be one of the worst pundits around.

Speaking of darts, Sid Waddell was probably the only example of someone you could plug into literally any role in any sports broadcasting and he would do as good a job, if not better than the actual experts. He was basically a Swiss Army Knife commentator. Sorely missed.

That's a shame tbh.

But he's not getting any younger. Whether you agree or disagree with his posts, he's entitled to them.

Personally, I will miss the plonker, MOTD won't be the same.
I have no doubt he will get another presenting job on a different network.

The spud flogger makes more than enough dosh without the BBC anyway, and he'll continue winding up gammons and baiting rag journalists on podcasts all the same :D Another situation where BBCs hands were forced - they essentially have no choice, regardless of Lineker's awareness of the imagery.

But if I hear one more time that the BBC is "impartial" I'll lose my mind. They are so incredibly partisan, it just always happens to align with the government's geopolitics.

You seriously think a woman can bring the energy and insight the Robbie Savage would bring to the role.

More than overdue. IF he feels his ability to comment on social medai is more important than his highly paid BBC job - then fine - but you cant have both Gary.

Argueably the BBC should never have been paying that sort of salary for a name to front thier fotball coverage anyway.

It wouldnt have been so bad if Lineker actually researched what he posts first - but instead its all the usual Internet Cause of the Week butterfly stuff.

He’s also developed a weird thing the last few years where he can’t stop fiddling with his nose. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. It’s just annoying.

I actually will miss him, as I just grew up with him being the football presenter on TV. Would have liked to have seen him host the World Cup one last time.
