EV general discussion

Oh is my MG5 not capable?

There's no dc points here

Apparently not - to be fair, I’d never thought about it either, as I’ve never charged publicly on anything other than DC as it’s so slow in comparison!

Yeah I didn't realise, saw it was badged 22kw and thought that's what I'd get. It's ok, I will leave it for the 4 hours I paid for the car park then stop on the way back at a dc.

Car parking seemed to suggest it was free if charging but it's not fully clear so I paid.

the renault 4 & review also trading like r5 on the modernised nostalga look ... it's a happy face with cute rear lights - like twingoe
would want to know tech details of the roll-tops sound/heat insulation +weather-proofing,
reviewer implies that rear suspension is multi-link vs r5, so bumps & mini roundabouts less disturbing (yaris I drive regularly suffers versus bmw/audi)

The cable you're using can matter too, my mg4 will do 11kw but only with a sufficient AC cable (which wasn't what came with the car)

hmmmm. to each there own but looks wise unlike the R5 that does nothing for me.

Peugeot are missing a trick. they should go head to head with the R5 and bring out a Pug 205 electric.

I know that, what is the little red one for to the right and when do I use it?
It's the handbrake. The car will automatically apply it when going into Park (large circular P) and release again when going into D (unless you turn off auto hold).

When we had the MG4 we never manually used the Handbrake as it just worked automatically.

With the Tesla I just get out and walk away, let it put itself in park. I guess if I wanted to leave on a steep hill then I'd hold the parking button down, just in case it does anything different.

I have to be very careful when I rent other cars, I've been known to leave them unlocked, or without the parking brake on or even with the engine running...

I don't hate it. Clearly going toe to toe with the Panda with that one.

205 reboot would be interesting!

I had to go down to Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen yesterday, a 121 mile round trip and typically forgot to give the car a 100% charge on Friday night. Luckily just up from the hospital is a Tesco with a few chargers. The plan was to get there leave the car at Tesco on charge and go for my appointment but the back road (mostly single track with passing spaces) between Dufftown and Lumsden has been completely wrecked by the recent frosts and snow that we havee had so I had to take it very easily and had to go straight to the hospital. After my appointment I was bursting for the loo anyway so I stuck the car on charge (50kw) went to the loo and grabbed something to eat. Got back to the car and ate my food and the car was already at 80% (from 30%) so stopped the charge and unplugged. Waiting for a charge was no problem as I would have had to stop and get something to eat even if I had a ICE powered car.

A 50% charge in 27 minutes is pretty good for my first experience at a public charger but what a faff to get started. Following the instructions on the charger I plugged the car in and passed my debit card over the contactless thing on the charger which then couldn't connect to the network. I had to unplug the car, download the app and create a Podpoint account. Then I had to verify it's me but I used the wrong email account which isn't used with my phone so I had to cancel that email and use the Gmail on my phone so I could access the verification email then add some credit to my account. Then I had to log into my account again and find the name of the charger I wanted to use before plugging the car back in and charging. All this would have been bypassed if contactless actually worked but now I have a account that will very rarely be used with credit in it still. One could argue that they intentionally set contactless to fail so they have your details and your money, especially as a chap who pulled up to the charger across from me also couldn't get contactless to work but that's tin foil hat stuff, or is it?

I think the older networks all went the route of accounts and such. Newer regulations say they have to have credit card readers. Dunno if thats true in the UK. Tends to be more expensive though.

I think we are quite set on getting an EV now, just £38k is a lot of money and I'm not good at spending lots of money
Wanted to look at one today, but the garage was shut....doh.
Next weekend it is.
Just need to decide whether to sell our car private, or at least try to, to get more money, or just trade in. But also mapped it, so don't know if anyone will take it trade.
It's also a nice example and seems a waste to go into the trade.

What the heck are you buying that is 38k used? Or is it 'nearly' new?

Yeah, nearly new.
isn't that a really bad time to buy an EV because on one hand you don't get offered a those nice tax breaks whilst OTOH you have not got over the initial 3 year depreciation cliff.

personally I would be looking at a 2022 era car but with a warranty OR just get a decent lease brand new.

that said it does depend on the car. £38k would be a lot for a model Y 2nd hand..... but if it's an etron GT or Taycan it's not so bad ;)

I say nearly new, it's 2 years old, but that will be the newest I've ever bought.
It's a Kia EV6 GT, around £50k new, so depreciated a bit already.
Kinda wanted to get in before ethe April 25 tax rises!

So you want to save a few quid in road tax and will pay way over the odds on a used car to do it? Take a step back from that logic please.

We are two months from the start of April.

There are quite a few GT models that are £3000 plus cheaper on AT. Or about 20 years of road tax if that’s what matters.

It's not a requirement to save road tax, but if I can, then why not?
All the ones I'm looking at near by are that price, I don't really want to travel hours and hours.
