Maybe, but it's an open goal in an amateur sunday league match, bottom division. Neither AMD nor nvidia really care much about the gaming market. AMD even less so than nvidia, since AMD has such a low market share and isn't even entering the top end of the market (where the margins are the highest in the market).

nvidia has sewn up the graphics card market as a sort of fashion market (fashion having far higher profit margins) and now has exclusive fishing for the whales in that market. nvidia has made graphics cards a fashion item to such an extent that they can charge double, freely use deceptive naming in their product stack from one generation to the next (e.g. calling a 60 series card a 70 series card) and even blatantly lie about their products (5070 has the same performance as a 4090 - a blatant lie) and still get away with it, still get almost all the sales in the market, still get customers swarming to compete to pay whatever nvidia charge, still get to be the default option. Paperish launch indeed and I think that's deliberate. Scarcity of product is an asset for a fashion brand inflating margins and chasing whales.

AMD have already messed it up again with this generation of graphics cards. They can mess it up. They already have messed it up. They worked hard to mess it up, making a de facto last minute unrelease of their cards and a hastily cobbled together flimsy excuse for doing so. I think that either the Radeon 9xxx cards have very serious problems that AMD only noticed at the last minute or AMD deliberately withdrew from the market to not just avoid competing with nvidia but actively support nvidia, deliberately handing the open goal to nvidia despite how badly nvidia has fumbled the play this generation. There's no doubt AMD deliberately withdrew from the market. Retailers already have stock of the cards. They could be selling them now.

There are other markets for processors that are far more profitable, including other markets for the same type of processor. Neither company cares about the gaming card market and AMD cares even less than nvidia does.

I think you're thinking of testable hypotheses when you're thinking of hypotheses. Testable hypotheses are useful. Untestable hypotheses aren't very useful, but they are hypotheses.
 
I feel like them longer term aim for Nvidia and maybe AMD are things like GeForce now becoming the main way to game. More money in data centre and AI.
Google Stadia was fantastic but with some caveats and i felt it could have gone further but at the time the full stack of PC hardware wars was underway. Fast forward and handhelds with AI are upon us delivering fantastic results, add in GeForce now on any platform and you can game on the handheld or dock and switch to 4k streamed AAA game via GeForce now. Makes a cost effective setup with portability in mind. TVs are darn good now for use as an upper end monitor too.
AMD win the mobile GPU and Nvidia win the streaming service. A win for both I guess?
What does it have with this round of GPU's? I believe the manufacturing cost, the corporate profit requirements has driven these GPU's to be less of a hardware performance progression but a progressive move with the software, DLSS, FSR etc. Until AMD release and things change and all me boring speculation is proven wrong :D

I agree, I think it would save us all some sanity by closing off the thread for 3 weeks and less chance of boredom and lack of news leading to off-topic rambling.
Mods, would this be an abuse of your powers? :p

Though performance I'd guess is between 7900XT and 5080 lol, being optimistic ;)

At least this has been consistent for a while now. With the Blackwell cards not gaining much its looking a more appetising option.

Yep, the performance delta between a 7900 XT and a 4080 is about 15% on average at 4K and about 10% at 1440p.

If a 9070 XT is near the higher end AMD end of that assessment and the RT performance is indeed about 50% better than a 7900 XT, then it’s actually a viable upgrade for 7900 XT owners. Possibly even an all round better gaming GPU than the 7900 XTX, if RT is important to you.

I would say the 9070 non XT will be the bigger seller at the rumoured performance. Not far off a 7900 XT, with much better RT that competes with Nvidia. Essentially a 4070 Ti Super with FSR4 at a considerably lower price. If it is priced under £500 then that would potentially be the card that helps AMD win market share.

Also.... AMD are about to launch a Laptop APU that's quicker than Intel's flagship Desktop GPU in gaming and quicker than a Desktop 4090 in ML, OEM's are salivating at it.

This is where AMD's priorities are now, taking Intel's final source of revenue.

Hows the video encoding and decoding and streaming? Its the only thing intel gpus are sold for now

If its faster than 4090 at AI then its gotta be 2 to 3 times faster than a 7900XTX, does not sound difficult at all since it probably has lots of dedicated AI silicon onboard

Its AV1 which on the AMD side is as good as anything.

This was the first video i recorded when i got the RX 7800 XT, it was at the default AV1 40 Gb/s, can go as high as 100 Gb/s.

 
Well this is a gaming focused enthusiast forum, so the majority here don’t see this massive disparity in priority. AMD have been massively focused over the years in not just taking on Intel, but have utterly taken over as the main CPU player. GPUs have been a sideshow for AMD and all the complaints about them needing to compete in GPUs or risk losing all their market share and dying because of this are laughable. AMD are making the vast majority of their profits in CPU/APU business.

Nvidia never had this luxury of having a bigger and more lucrative side of their business to focus on. Now we are seeing how Nvidia are taking the same approach to sideline gamers for AI.

PC GPU markets are decreasing year on year for both Nvidia and AMD. High prices and low gains are the new norm folks.
