Asus ROG Crosshair X870E Hero - is it possible to have 2 x PCie5.0 SSD's?

Generally speaking: it is only a few percent hit on the 5080, so you're not going to notice, but if your workload actually needs the speed of the PCIE5 e.g. for massive file copies/transfers, then you WILL notice that, assuming the SSD can sustain those speeds.

AM5: ughh, that's a complicated one. Generally speaking: ANY AM5 board which has a PCIE 5.0 M.2 slot (they don't all) can offer that without any impact on the GPU lanes, but when you need to use multiple M.2 slots it is very easy to get lane sharing again. Technically, AM5 CPUs can offer up to 2x M.2 slots (PCI-E 5.0 or 4.0) without any impact on the GPU, but with the latest X870/X870E boards, they usually use 4 of the CPU's 8 spare lanes for USB4, which means you may only get 1 M.2 slot that has no lane sharing.

So I've got 1 x gen 5 SSD and a second gen 4 drive, so I'd need to find a board that can accommodate that and the 5080 at x16 speeds without any compromise.

Yes. It doesn't matter if the second drive is gen 4, by the way, because the sharing will be hard wired even if the second PCIE 5.0 slot is only used at gen 4 speeds.

The last gen X670E/X670 boards are generally less problematic because of the absence of USB4.

Though, I must say, this is not a switch I'd ever do just to regain those few percent on a 5080. We're a couple of gens out from it being worth upgrading a high-end 1700 CPU,.

Yeah I think I'll wait, is AM5 going to be around for a while? I was thinking going AMD anyway at some point as I generally game so probably more suited to their CPU's.

One more gen (zen 6) then replaced, so far as I'm aware, but I don't think that is confirmed.

@Tetras so I've done some testing last night and running the PCIE M.2 SSD in the gen 5 slot 100% makes the 5080 run at 8x however strangely since doing a full windows reinstall and putting this drive in I'm getting higher 3D Mark scores even on the PCI 3D Mark test. Very strange! So I would agree with what's been said the difference isn't worth worrying about. At least now I'm getting the best out of my Gen 5 SSD and no noticeable hit to performance on the 5080 at all!

How many nvme drives are you using

Ok I think if you move the gen 4 to the bottom slots gen 4 slots you'll get x16 back if I've understood the reviews right mate

So the gen 5 in the very top slot under the big heatsink above gpu and the other in gen 4 off chipset should give you x16

Agreed, it's the lesser of 2 evils, I can't notice any gaming performance drop how I have it now with the RTX 5080 @ x8 vs having it at 16 and the Gen 5 SSD running at half speed.
Yup, Derbauer ran a 5090 at PCIE 3 and it lost 4% (less at 4k).

Gen 5 makes so little real world difference for a GPU or SSD.

I thought gen 5 in top slot would still running at full speed and so would gpu gen 4 drive will only run gen 4 am I missing something mate as surley gen 4 in bottom slot will still running at gen 4 speeds if your happy with it fair enough mate enjoy im still looking for a board it's either this hero or the srix I'm looking at what do you think of the board mate

I'm running a Z790 MSI Carbon mate so different board. :)

Thanks buddy,

I'm guessing I would be better taking a hit on the X8 on the 5080 than the SSD speeds? The new SSD does up to 14500/12400 speeds so is almost "double" my secondary fire cuda SSD.

Also which AM5 boards do both?

Stop trying to chase gb rates, it's pontless you only see it in benchmarks

I use regular 500MB SSD 2.5" and it's plenty fast enough.

Loading time for a game, difference between SSD 2.5" and NVME gen 4 is 1 second.

lol

haha to be fair you can't tell either way would be nice though if you could everything as intended, but it appears only a few boards do so without any compromise. :)

I believe it's the rogue and strix for definite think most others you can use 1gen 5 and 1 gen 4 off chipset but don't know if it's all apparently the asrock board as well think most can run 2 x870e boards that is without effecting gpu as long as they're in the correct slots

The strix and hero can run 3 if you use the 2 gen 4 slots at bottom that's my understanding of it but it's a minefield out there to be honest
