They used to. I've told this story before, but I recall when 1000 series came out, 980ti dropped down to 970 prices (and I attempted to nab one at that price). Nowadays, the new GPUs are often not that much better than existing ones, that the old ones still sell well even at non-discounted prices. Look at what happened to current gen AMD GPUs after the 5090/5080 launched. They've been selling like hotcakes, even with new cards around the corner.

Prices of old GPUs are just going to go up after these new ones launch.

So yea that's about the same as $750 or there abouts, they've already kind of backed themselves into a corner with their retreating from the high end statement, going after market share (or whatever the exact wording was) statements because if they price the 9070 XT too far away from the consoles they'll open themselves up to questions about what they think mainstream gamers are.
 
I don't think AMD will make any inroads as they got used to fat margins in the pandemic and will not let them go. The 5700XT had a big bump over the previous gen, 7800XT bumped it up again and now the 9070 will probably do it again. Most users will not spend £500+ on a GPU, Intel did the right thing going after < £300 sales.
 
Im assuming this has to be a decent bit quicker than the 7900xt and at LEAST on a par/if not a bit better than the 7900xtx if the price point they are aiming at is $749....?

It will be a horrendously disappointing release if not, because otherwise almost zero gain in price/performance has been made, and you are getting less vram (which is what AMD seemed to pride themselves on).

quick question, if the MSRP was say £600 for the 9070XT, how much extra would you deem acceptable for an AIB?

I still think that £600 is not mainstream, I’d say £400-£550 is actually mainstream (0060/0070)

For AIBs putting on AIO etc I can a bigger cost, but if MSRP was £600, AIBs charging £750+ for a slightly upgraded cooler and a factory OC just show contempt for the consumer.

If I recall the AMD reference models are actually of good quality now, decent coolers and aesthetics. Long gone are the 290x ref blower days!
 
If maybe the 9070 non xt is about 400 i might be tempted, but anything higher would be a no go. Coming from a 6070xt. Hopefully the rt is much improved vs the 6070xt for cyberpunk and portal rtx. Since i could probs sell th 6070xt for 250 i think an extra 250 or 200 probs doable. Anything more than that is way too much for a gpu. Im not exactly looking for 4k + 60hz on a 1440p 75hz monitor. Tho never know i might try one day for a 4k 120hz screen with good hdr one day. AIR which offer a little more performance no doubt i wouldnt go for anthing too much since aib generally only offer a little improvement over standard which imo isnt worth it i mean oc is basically dead these days vs the golden years when oc was acutally worth something. So the baseline mmrp ones are the ones to for not the air models incense the ones air are offering baically 5% more performance for a helll of a lot more cash which imo is worthless.

Doesn’t it really depend on just how fast it will be. If it is only around 7900xt or just above in performance, it should be a £500 or less card.

In terms of AIB pricing, it's always mostly stupid to me. I never entertain paying much more (if any at all) above the MSRP of the reference model, as you just end up creeping up to the gpu tier above.

Rumour is between 7900XT and the XTX in performance but better RT capabilities.

If you don't use FSR at all, I assume the person buying the card isn't interested in top end AAA gaming, so i wouldn't suggest they be looking at brand new GPU's at release

Yes, because i honestly couldn’t give a **** about ray tracing.

A card of that calibre/performance isnt enough to play a lot of games with ray tracing enabled at 1440p. Loads of games drop under 60fps with RT on on a 4070ti/ti super level card so i'm not all that interested. Unless it is going to miraculously match the 4090 or 5090 in RT, it isnt worth considering that much for me.

I'm also not entirely convinced by frame generation yet either, but i can see some merit so that would be a bonus. It does sometimes feel like an excuse to not really push the boundaries in actual performance though these days.

I'm not concerned with FG, although I will try it out as never really had it (my 480 doesn't do a good job of it) The problem is RT, some games are RT only, Indy Jones for one...if games start requiring RT and can't be disabled- that is a problem.

Thing is, we are approaching a shader model 3 type situation, only 21 years later..

There are more and more games releasing today that requires a ray tracing capable GPU, AMD must know this now.. and if the leaks are to be believed the RT gains are MASSIVE vs the 7xxx generation, I imagine for the price, the RT performance has to be better than the 4070ti/super

I'm not interested in frame generation either , but can get behind upscaling most times now you'll find it difficult to notice the difference and AMD bringing hardware upscaling

It's not matching 4090-5090 totally different pricing levels, how's the 4070 ti super RT with dlss quality at 1440p ?
4070ti super level RT with good upscaling should be more than playable at 1440p

If it's around £600-£650 I think that would be decent something that's actually playable with RT
