Usually just get a WiFi 7 adapter. For desktops you can usually get a decent one that slots in the PCIe slot. For laptops it'll be mini PCIe or NGFF, depending on the model, but there are some cases where it's soldered on so you can't replace the inbuilt one, but you can go USB. Macbooks I suspect you'll also be limited to USB adapters.
Okay, that sound good. I have a 2012-2014 MacBook pro, so will now try and see if I can either get a dongle/adapter if there not too big, or ideally a mini PCIe or NGFF, which I assume actually goes into the laptop...once I check whether the current wifi card for my model is soldered on or can be replaced. Thank for that Orcvader.

I wouldn't bother trying to put a Wi-Fi 7 adapter in a decade old laptop. Especially an Intel Mac, it's a dead platform, nobody is going to bother writing drivers for it.

They really need a service status page. It would help them and customers hugely.

They have a basic one,

Community Fibre service status

NETWORK ISSUES AFFECTING MULTIPLE CUSTOMERS

We apologise to those customers that suffered an outage yesterday but service should now be restored.

If you’re still experiencing any issues getting online, please power off the fibre box and WiFi router, turning them back on again after a short period. Your connection may take 1 min to 3 mins to re-establish.

Please check ethernet is in the correct port: best to remove and place back in. Please note, the router should be the only device connected to the modem (Adtran/Huawei).

To find out if you are affected by an outage in your area, please log into My Account where you will be able to get the latest updates. (The browser automatically refreshes the screen every 10 minutes so you will get updates as they happen.)

If you have not signed up to My Account yet, you can create an account following the guidance in this article: My Account - How do I log in?

If you are experiencing technical issues but are not impacted by an outage, you can follow our troubleshooting tool here: I have no internet. What can I do?

You're trying to find a product that supports a Wi-Fi spec that didn't formally exist when the latest OS that runs on your laptop became unsupported by Apple. The best you'll manage is a Wi-Fi 6 adapter and some hacky drivers.

I didn’t account for Apple software updates when considering this idea, food for thought! Thanks for that.

Just got an email about the outage:

Dear ----,

I write to apologise and say sorry if you suffered any disruption to your Broadband service yesterday afternoon when we had a network outage. I fully appreciate how essential a reliable connection is for everyone and I’m sorry for any inconvenience this outage may have caused.

Most customers were back online late afternoon yesterday as we resolved the problem. Some customers are still experiencing issues as a consequence of the outage which are showing up in equipment settings. If you are still having issues, please try powering off your fibre box and WiFi router, then turn them back on after a short period. Your connection should re-establish within 1 to 3 minutes. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, please visit our Troubleshooting pages for more support or call us on 0800 0820770.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Looks like another DNS outage.... I'm in London.

Switched to Google DNS, will probably stay on that.

Email again.

Unfortunately, I am having to apologise again as we had a network outage for 30 minutes this afternoon. Most customers should have had service restored immediately and we will keep working to get everyone restored.

If you’re still experiencing any issues getting online, please switch the power off to the fibre box for 2 minutes and turn it back on. Then, switch off the power to the router for 2 minutes and turn it back on. Your connection may take 1 to 3 minutes to re-establish.

Please do not attempt any other troubleshooting steps like adjusting any settings or taking out any cables as this may prevent service restoring automatically.

Thank you so much and sorry for any inconvenience.

There really is no reason for anyone to use the public DNS rather than jumping onto Google or Cloudflare, or even better setting up Adguard/NextDNS.
