What film did you watch last night?

Memoir of a snail - stop motion film about a woman who narrates her life story to date. Really good. All the characters are great. A delight. 8/10

Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)

First time I've watched it in probably 18 years and it's not quite as good as I remember. My main gripe now is it seems less action packed than I remember and a touch slow or padded out now.

Se7en (on Amazon Prime)

Cop thriller where 2 detectives become invested in solving a series of grizzly murders.

This film is excellent for its overall tone of misery and apathy in the context of city living. Brad Pitt (tenacious everyman) and Morgan Freeman (jaded veteran) offset each other perfectly and you find yourself routing for them every time you watch it.

Very well paced and altogether an essential worth IMO. Don’t ruin it for yourself, go in blind.

Worth a mention: some of the dialogue in this film, particularly in the opening sections, sets the tone well but because it’s so sparse / throwaway it can be quite hard to follow as they mumble to each other softly. I recall watching it when I was much younger and wondering if I heard them correctly. I’d recommend it with subtitles tbh - you also then get to ‘read’ what some characters are saying in the background which is basically impossible to ‘hear’.

I find myself enjoying more and more films with subtitles these days.

Anora - 7/10
Not sure what to make of this, Mikey Madison absolutely shines in the title role and I think without her charisma the film might have just descended into smutiness (Showgirls). She certainly appeared to have done preparation and research for the role. Definitely a lot of subtle humour to it. Thought the guy that played Igor was actually very good and had a redemption act as such as it could be.

The Hunt (2020) - 7/10

A mostly traditional violent and gory action horror film with just enough surprises and unconventional ideas to keep it entertaining.

The quick pace and quirky style makes it fun and the political commentary/satire is cutting and grounded enough (only in America) to be somewhat realistic.

Good acting and finale but it could have done with more ‘hunting’ action and more dark humour.

The Green Mile - 9.5 / 10

I read the book, then watched the movie right after. I don't think I realised it had fantasy elements in it, so that was a bit of a surprise. Great book, great movie. I normally can't stay interested for such a long movie (3 hrs)but the time seemed to pass quite quickly.

Blue Valentine (2010)

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling in a film about the highs and lows of falling in and out of love.

Both actors are excellent and the whole film is a very grounded and realistic portrayal of life and love of an ordinary couple.

Terms of Endearment. Ostensibly watching for Jack Nicholson who chews the scenery and is great. But pleasantly surprised by the movie as a whole. Definitely somewhat dated but I laughed out loud a good few times. Directed by James L Brooks of the Simpsons fame.
