AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Sometimes it's worth shopping around like I did!
I did, there was nothing at MSRP at the time.

EDIT: I've been checking since November (not every day but on and off) and not seen one at MSRP until a week after I buy one.
It's a pain as it's hassle (and expense) for me and probably a hassle (and expense) for OcUK if I return this one (unopened) and then seconds later order a new one from the same retailer I'm returning one to.

Typical, I bought one 7 days ago (from OcUK), now I'm gonna have to return it and re-order it. Just my luck, I'm sure earlier in this thread I said this was going to happen :(
Just send a message and ask ocuk to refund the difference? It's silly to pull your pc apart and initiate a bogus return unless you can avoid it.

Give them a call and see if they will refund the difference, may save you having to return it.

If not then return it

9800X3D back at MSRP. :)

Had the 9800X3D in my basket along with Motherboard and memory for 2 weeks. Ordered yesterday morning - 2 hours later noticed the price dropped! :D Call up OcUK and they refunded the difference straight away.

Will be upgrading from a 5800x @ 4.7Ghz. This will then go into my Son's PC (My old 3700x @ 4.2Ghz) Upgrades all round ;)

Contacted OcUK and they said they would refund the difference (so I guess I just have to hope they do as it could take 7 working days).
Still, assuming no issues then it's a nice little touch from OcUK.

So my upgrade kit arrived from OcUK

Code:
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Eight Core 5.20GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail £488.99 1 £488.99
G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo EXPO RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 PC5-48000C30 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit £128.99 1 £128.99
Gigabyte X870E Aorus Elite WIFI7 (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard £289.99 1 £289.99

Running -30 on the cure on all cores @ ~72c fully loaded with my aging H115i (360 rad) fans on silent. Very pleased.

When I setup the BIOS, I set the XMP/EXPO profile and it ran perfectly. After 5 hours I noticed that the machine rebooted with 16Gb of RAM. So went in the BIOS to check. Since then, I've not been able to run the memory in together with the profile. The EXPO profile runs perfect on each stick on their own, also if I turn off the profile and set it to 6000mhz, but running slower timings (40, 50, 50 , 96) Any ideas?! Strange how it was perfectly stable for a good few hours beforehand. I've updated the BIOS, still the same. Note, it always boots fine, but blue screens as tries to load windows.

Overall a nice improvement over the 5800x. I've notice that the 1% lows are much higher and compiling shaders in Black Ops 6 is almost twice as quick.

I'd dial the curve offset back a bit to -25/20 and take it from there. A value of -30 is quite high straight off the bat ; all it takes is for one core to be dysfunctional and stability goes out the window. Also, since it's a new set of RAM sticks have you run Memtest86 etc to ensure there aren't faults ?

is -40 -40mv? I've set -40 to my 7700 and it hasn't crashed yet

Every chip is different with respect to how much of an offset can be applied. If yours is running fine ( no crashes or failing to POST ) at -40 offset then there is no need to change. But an offset value of -40 is on the high end ; most guides/experts suggest starting somewhere in the range of -15 to -20. Not all cores are equal ; the people who enjoy fiddling with these things tend to adjust each core separately in smaller increments and do repeated testing.

if you're tweaking cores individually, is there a way to tell which core is weaker/failing?

Yes, but it's more complicated as you'll need software to view how each core is functioning. Alternatively, if you are getting crashes you can look at the WHEA logs in Windows event viewer and see which CCD/core caused the crash.

Thanks, TBF - I've been dialling it up slowly. PC has been running this morning and been playing BO:6 without any issues for the past 3 hours. This is with the Ram @ 6000 but timings much slower (default, 40, 50, 50 etc)

Edit - will run MemTest at some point today. It seems to be rock solid at @6000 with the higher timings.

I've got a corsair H115i pro AIO sat inside a Phanteks Evolve X case.

Running the same cooler and getting around 72c under fulload. With a -30 offset.

Had to change the pump on the 115i in icue from Silent to balanced to get decent temps. Try that or “Extreme”

Did you have to get new mounting hardware? I've got a h150i on my 5800x currently. I remember hearing that the mounting bracket is the same as am4?

Nope, it’s the same as am4. Literally just refitted and it’s on well. It uses the standard AM4/5 plastic mounts.

Just need to ensure the iCue software is not setup on silent like mine was for my 5800x

Nice. Yeah I've got a custom fan curve setup and the pump was always run on Extreme for me.
It's also the 360mm version so I assume it has a bit more headroom.

OK, I've just run TestMem5 and it's reported an error...

I'll try the Windows memory tester, but I guess it's RMA time?

Edit - Windows memory Diagnostic ran fine…
