Intel Core Ultra 9 285k 'Arrow Lake' Discussion/News ("15th gen") on LGA-1851

Oh my, no expense spared then. Enjoy, I'm sure you will.
Thanks Vimes, they were at a pretty good price, not sure if it will be honored though, as the company I ordered from are not the best.

edit Cudimms shipped, colour me surprised, if they work correctly whilst passing stress tests I will sell the Corsair ram I bought previously.

Has the bios and firmware updates for these since launch, made them more competitive for gaming?

Im currently rocking a 13900K, and have that itch, but all the launch reviews, basically trash it for gaming, but say its great for productivity

In a better place now than they were at launch, with a platform change would be looking at AMD options too as they are still generally ahead.

13900k to even a 285k is a sidegrade at best, an expensive one that doesn’t make much sense. If you play games, buy a 9800X3D. Or just keep hold of the 13900k it’s more than powerful enough for most things. 285k is slower in some instances!

I wouldn't upgrade from a 13900k to a 285k or a 9800x3D unless you're still playing at a low resolution or playing the select few titles that benefit from these 3D chips at higher resolutions.

Wait until the next generation, or even the one after that.

Let us know what you think of it once built and how you get on with it
Will do, was going to use a SFX power supply which would mean the RTX 4080 Super would probably fit, but the 24pin cable was too short on the power supply. Luckily I had a spare power supply I could use, but then the RTX 4080 Super wouldn't quite fit, so going with the RTX 4070 Super, which should be ok for 1440P.

I'll use the RTX 4080 Super with the Reverb G2 build that I am doing which has a higher resolution than my monitor.

Oh my, what a journey for you. Could you not have used extension type cables for the power supply.?
Nice to have choices though, had you already got the 4070 Super..?
Decent card.

All the best

Which SFX power supply have you got? I'd have suggested ordering some custom cables from someone like DreambigbyRay on Etsy, I've always used Ray for any of my SFF builds as he'll make the cables exactly as you need!

Thanks guys, was thinking of power extension cables, but don't want to spend any more money really and the 4070 Super should be a good fit for 1440p, and I can use the the RTX 4080 Super for the Reverb G2

I posted a few benchmarks earlier in the thread, generally 1440P / 4K there won't be much in it, but yes, you get some games which run better on the AMD CPU and some better on the Intel. As swap between the 285K and 9950X3D quite a bit; that said, the 9950X3D is on the side as I have had many issues with the X870E Hero, so I am waiting for the Apex to arrive. Power and cooling wise, the Core Ultra's do use a lot less power and generate a lot less heat than the 12/13/14th Gen counterparts. However, if it is just gaming, the 9800X3D is hard to beat as a package as a whole, but then it depends on your use case for the PC

The other aspect is general Windows use with things like Office / Web Browsing etc.. i've found the 285K to use less power than the 9800X3D / 9950X3D

Also, while I remember much like PBO / CO on the AMD side, the Intel turning you have several options to pull up the performance. As an example, you can tune up the Cache, NGU, D2D, E Core quiet a lot to increase performance but the P cores don't have a lot of headroom.

Skatter Bencher has a very good guide on it all:

Imagination running wild again?

Imagination running wild again?

Sigh....

By all means, go and test the total system draw from the wall and let me know, much like the results I await for your RAM tuning.

Finished my 265k BUILD, had a couple of issues mounting the AIO, first attempt I where the CPU pump is attached on the mounting was in the wrong direction, so all the tubes were too stretched and it just smeared my thermal paste application.
Second attempt I still managed to smudge the thermal paste a bit, but carried on regardless.
Getting around 30 degrees C idle in bios, is this OK?
Finally when the build was finished there was a rattling sound, I knew it was a fan, the USB C cable was interfering with a fan on the RTX 4070 Super, so quickly adjusted it and quiet again.

Very please with how quiet the system is, will be perfect to use for a music production build, which will be it's main task.

Which AIO did you go with in the end?

30 at idle sounds about right to me, mine is sitting at 32 deg right now with emails, music, excel etc. all open! Occasionally I'll see it drop to 26 when I'm doing absolutely nothing on the PC but I've found it's idle temps much more comfortable than I had on my 5800X3D.

Unsure if you've had a look at any OC/UV yet but I'd definitely recommend getting Intel XTU to see what you can get out of your chip. I found bumping Ecores to 4.8ghz and ring clock to 40x without any changes to voltage were a really good starting point.

This is the problem with a lot of reviews not showing the full spectrum especially how Intel CPUs are still often significantly more power efficient than AMD in idle through to moderate utilisation while AMD currently hold the advantage under heavy utilisation.

So the actual power consumption over a whole day can be a very different story depending on your usage.

Had similar issues with a 8400 kit on the QVL list, even got another identical set in case it was faulty and same was happening with random BSOD when it would boot, swapped it to my known working 6000 sticks and it was fine for the remaining time I was on Intel before switching back to AMD.
