EV general discussion

Would you risk it on an older Tesla or I Pace, or any other recommendations?

Bottom end of your budget.

Ignore the mileage, its LR car so and deg will be irrelevant vs SR etc. Not saying it is perfect, but if you just want to dip your toes in for a couple of years, and then move it on it won't cost you an arm and a leg. Also cheap/easy to repair normal maintenance parts these days.

Mid range ID.3 as well but on a 23 plate.

Looks to be in decent condition as well.

The ID.3 is an EV platform and has more interior space and has smaller exterior dimensions than a P2.

So by and large is a better family sized EV and can be had cheaper.

Why is it. They are pretty small in the back with the low roof line
In what world is a model 3 not a ‘large family car’?

I’m not sure I’d consider a model 3 to be ‘small in the back’ either.

I’m 6ft tall and there is more than enough space for me (leg and headroom) and 2 adults in the back fit more than comfortably.

3 adults isn’t going to happen for more than a quick trip round the block but few cars will seat 3 adults in the back comfortably.

It dwarfs the likes of a polestar 2 for interior space and you can pick up long range dual motor cars for the bottom end of the budget in decent condition. They also have more range and charge faster than Polestar 2’s at this price point.

@tres Model 3’s are generally reliable. The weak points are the suspension (both firm and wears quickly) but it’s cheap to repair if needed. Good 3rd party parts are available and no need to take it to Tesla for that kind of work. If you are looking at a pre-2021 car with the silver trim, check the pain around the sills and the inside of the arches carefully. Supercharger network is ‘cheap’(er), easy to use and reliable, of course you have all other public chargers to use also.

Yes it’s a sample of 1 but these cars have proven they can do the miles over and over:

The other obvious issue is Musk and the extreme ‘anti-Musk’ crowd but even that seems to be blowing over as quickly as it started.

Have some significant miles in a model 3. Id3 and CUPRA born is significantly bigger. With much more rear headroom. They are also better cars (but worse computers with wheels) and the seating position is far more comfortable as you aren’t lying down. I’m 6’3 and 105kg if that makes a difference ?

Polestar2 are also tiny in the back seats so not sure why that’s a reference

A model 3 isn’t a large family car. It’s a compact saloon at best.

Compact saloon? No, not really. Sure, it’s only 4.7m but it dwarfs the likes of a 3 series in terms of interior space, ground up EV and all that. It’s much closer to a 5 series in terms of the interior space but as like many EVs, with a smaller height between the floor and top of the rear seat base due to the battery - just like other ‘non-SUV’ EVs.

I think we’ve all lost sight of what a family car is. When I was growing up, anything 4 doors and >300l of bool space was a ‘family car’, something like a Model 3 or a Polestar 2 would be considered large.

Model 3 owner here with a wife and two teenage daughters - boot space is surprisingly adequate (see preface) especially when you add in the boot "cubby" and "frunk"

At a shade over 6ft it's also a non-issue as a driver or passenger (front or rear)

Vw's are banned from military sites as well as jlr

Yea they are getting pretty strict with Chinese spyware. I wonder if designers even considered this... Probably not.

With mobiles phones and laptops as well. Purchasing Chinese components and brands was banned years ago (Lenovo, ZTE etc), but now visitors aren't allowed in with them either. Even in on some X listed non-military sites.

family car is something with practicality of interior space to put the proverbial kitchen sink in, or moreover trip to diy store, ******* big television, washing machine, bicycles,
used to put 3 people and bicycles inside a vectra hatchback - 3 touring and A4 avant have improved on that,
respective volume of the batteries beneath floor, versus the ICE accouterments beyond it's wheelbase, isn't favourable for ev, so have to build vertically;
Alpine with batteries at front and back will be an interesting ev evolution.

mg5 vs 3 touring for usable boot space the mg5 wins.
Suitcases for the airport run prove that.

It's nice having slopey angles until you need to use it.

But we were comparing a id3 to a model 3. Not a 3 series. Id3 or cupra is much bigger and a better family car in my experience

11cm taller can’t be ignored

Peeple keep banging on about this banned from military sites stuff but why would that stop you buying a car unless you're in the military lol

If they have been banned by the MOD it means GCHQ has most likely found something suspicious. It's only a matter of time before someone else hacks their way in as the CCP doesn't really care about the security of it's victims.
