EV general discussion

[

exothermic energy release on battery run-away ? like that recent xiaomi.
has been discussed before how few ev's can be woken via wi-fi to initiate a morning defrost say (you need a reliable mobile signal ), but maybe there is an anti-tamper method in this madness

Many ICe can remote start the engine from WiFi too ( and that mystical 4/5G that exists )

Higher and loads more headroom in the back. 25 L extra doesn’t help when in back seats. Look at folded down rear seat capacity for idea

Have you sat or been inside either ?
Yes I've test driven a Polestar 2 thank you, and a MG4, a Skoda Enyac Coupe, and both the Volvo EX30 & EC40. For me the Polestar was fine, snug but ok and headroom isn't important anyway. Neither is room in for passengers in the rear. Both the Megan e-tech and the Kia Niro beat the ID3, which is just another pig ugly ev anyway.
Next on my test drives is the BMW i4 which is currently top of my lists with the Polestar 2 second.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder but imo pig ugly and the BMW i4 is a better fit than with the ID3 imo

I really dislike the direction of the current BMW's but again it's subjective.

imo if anything the ID3 is just bland, far too bland to generate any reaction such as pig ugly

which isn't to say it's not a good car but if I wanted essentially that car it would have to be the born for me.

Couldn’t drive one out of sheer principle. I’d absolutely hate to be seen getting out of one.

This is a huge shame because it otherwise ticks every box for me. I’d have absolutely considered it if someone didn’t have a stroke while designing it.

Fair enough. Sounds like you are buying for just you to drive. I was replying in context of a family car and space inside the car being more important than 25litrs of boot.

Yes ID3 ugly. Born much nicer but that’s 10mm lower and so only 10cm taller than the Tesla

I am because we don't know if my partner's medical condition preventing her from currently driving, and having to surrender her driving licence, is permanent so just making plans having sold my much loved M235i earlier in the year, which in hindsight I now wish I hadn't. But don't we all choose a car for our personal needs and try not to have to compromise too much? I also think the Born is not attractive looking either.

I'm quite aware of the feelings about the i4, but then I would not be seen dead in many ev's as well. Same was said in this forum about my 2GC but when people saw it in the flesh there was no criticism at all.
Last thing I worry about is other people's opinions anyway. It is my choice and aside from the front end, yes it looks like someone has kicked it in the nuts, everything else gets a 10/10. I would not call the car ugly though.

I think our ID3 is much prettier than most EVs; although the pre-facelist with the weird plastic bit of plastic trim on the bonnet definitely has a bit of fug about it. At least it's not a god awful crossover thing like so many cars these days.

Not a fan of the id3 personally.

I think the Born and the MG4 look far nicer in terms of EVs in that class. I actually liked the MG4 the most as it actually pretty much looks like a normal hatchback in terms of height/ride height etc. Even the Born still looks sort of awkward.

a lot of EV designers are trying too hard to make something look space age/different, which often results in them making hideous abominations.

I4 : cant you get a dark paint , so grill impact/contrast is reduced ( like the megane+mustang fronts, or A6etron if you have the money. )

OK didn't know - but absence of always on wi-fi for an ev (which most don't have) to allow defrost if you have poor mobile reception is a negative for my location
(and similarly need a charger with a LAN/wi-fi ohme)

You still considering the Toyota or been put of for some reason?

The only thing so far I am not a huge fan of is it does not look as good as others I like and also I have read many times Toyota seem to upload how fast you drive to insurance companies which can have a negative impact on your insurance premiums.

Two complete contradictory statements, which is it you care or don't care?
No they aren't because I'm aware of the polarising opinions of the i4 in here and in the BMW owners thread, very similar to what they were for my series 2 gran coupe with the self elected BMW purists in other threads too. But at the end of the day it's my opinion that that counts, not others.

There are many, many cars, especially with ev's these days it seems, that you could pick on features, if taken individually, look far far worse and I'd say in the majority, but I don't have an issue with the front end of the i4 at all really. As far as I'm concerned it bridges nicely between my beautiful 2GC M235i and an ev.

But it could all turn on it's head if my partner's health improves so she can drive again, I'm really hoping it does, we'll then be looking at an ev that isn't as large and I'll have to make some compromises as it is important she is mobile, first and foremost, and has a say in our future car.

Sorry I must have been confused as you stated you wouldn't be seen dead in certain EV's but then went on to say you don't care about the opinions of others. It just reads like you care what you look like to people but also don't care - *shrug* perhaps my English skills are lacking. Personally I couldn't give two hoots if I was seen getting in or out of an Austin Allegro, Renault Zoe, Datsun Bluebird, or BYD Seal, because it is a car and has no bearing on my life at all other than being a mode of transport and if people judge you based on what you drive they are pathetic and not worth talking to anyhow.

If I wanted to buy a used ev is there a way to check the soc health on the on board computer?
Looking at a 2021 volvo xc40 recharge. 400hp going for about £20K

True, but the difference is that ICE normally requires the engine to make heat, so the warming up means the engine idling which is a shockingly inefficient heating method as well as pumping pollution into the local environment.

We were talking about connectivity and hackers
