An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Some of the mechanics that have survived in to the remaster just make the game not fun to play today, worked back in the day, but games have moved on a bit, and it feels awfully clunky. That and the amount of loading screens, albeit very short ones, make it a chore.

I agree on the loading screens, that seems like such a Bethesda thing, I was hoping it wouldn't be too bad with the fact it was outsourced. I absolutely love the fact that it retains so much of the jank though, that is peak Elder Scrolls for me. I'm a big fan of 'clunk' too, appreciate it's not for everyone, but (nostalgia permitting) we rarely get games like this anymore, KCD2 was clunky enough to satisfy.

I don't mind the colours personally. Not seeing the need to mod anything just yet but that's not to say I won't ever.
Might actually make it to the first quest today.

I am close to completing KCD2. Was tempted for a bit joining you playing this. Then I said to myself **** that. Got loads of new games to be playing than playing a game that came out when I was at university

I tried half an hour or so of this via the Game Pass version. It's fine for Game Pass, but I wouldn't have wanted to spend £50 on it. The visuals can be pretty enough when there are no NPCs on screen, but the character animations are still squarely stuck in the 360 era, which really breaks the immersion and undermines a lot of the work done to improve the image quality. Even the very first fight in the sewers is a total jank-fest of clipping bugs and weird NPC-sliding.

I kinda like some of the jankyness, nostalgia :D

Oh I'm not really playing it. I just got out the sewers to have a look. It's not high on my list lol.

But you purchased it? Refund under 2 hours?

No I have GP for a month so I could play Blue Prince.
Which is why I'm not really playing it because I don't think I've ever kept a game pass subscription past one month prior to when I got the 3-year thing

Bought this and played just over 2 hours...and if it wasn't for being over 2 hours, I'd have refunded it.

Looks fantastic, and I bloody loved Oblivion, but man...aside from a hit of nostalgia, it's just not fun to play today. I was massively hyped for this when it leaked, but it was just seeing it through rose tinted glasses, as is the case a lot of times when revisiting older games

It was never going to be polished to the point it felt like a new and therefore different game.

They’ve done an excellent job of removing some of the more annoying clunkyness imo and playing with a bow now feels rewarding.

I wouldn’t pay £50 for it mind you.

They've done a great job of preserving the Xbox 360 era gameplay.

That's either a good thing for nostalgia reasons, or a bad thing because it's incredibly janky by modern standards :p I've just managed to descend down a vertical cliff face by relying on invisible bits of wall to break my fall

The new facial animations are (unintentionally?) hilarious.

The game is has some blatantly obvious bugs that should have been fixed

Like why does my sword cast a massive 100 foot shadow across any body of water? It's the screen space reflections causing it but I've never seen this in a game before, how can it get past testing..

whos playing without DLSS... those benchmarks are useless no offence.

I get over around 60-80fps with DLSS set to DLAA and everything on Ultra/hardware lumen RT with a 4090 before framegen
Around 90-100 on a 5090 with the same settings. Framegen gets it to a locked 120. But I've seen other games give similar performance with far better image quality.
