Road Cycling

I am loving the 32c chonkyness.. Cant wait to go for a ride tomorrow to feel the difference! From 80/85 psi 25c to 55/59 psi 32c. Bike weighing in at 8.3kg now.

Was supposed to head out early this morning on a ride but the missus was dead when the boys got up. Not even a rousing rendition of "shout in mummys ear really loudly" seemed to get her moving so I ended up going out about 9:15. Felt alright for the first hour and a half or so. I was in the shade of trees a fair bit and the heat hadn't kicked in at that point. I reckon it was only 23-24 degrees. After that though it was just grim. Such a horrible heat in the UK when it heads towards 30 degrees. I think I need to get some larger water bottles as well. I take 2 750ml bottles but I think 2 1ltr bottles would probably just about do for these sorts of rides.

I got home pretty overheated and once I wasn't getting the cooling effect of the moving air I just melted. Laid on the cold kitchen floor tiles for about 10 minutes sweating everywhere while my partner fanned me and I drank a pint of ice cold water. I'm not built for this heat!

~1250l squash bottles fit bottle cages well and/or fit a Topeak bar/post bottle mount to get a third bidon going.

I think finally i got my leg sorted..since March... only did 680km this year, 160 of which was last gravel ride few weeks back after which my leg wanted to fell off ( not because of the cycling...) was swollen, ended up iun A&E to make sure I dont have DVT...lucklily i dont, just ducked muscle made whole calf and ankle double its normal size...
so there is hope i will get some km's in frrom next weekend !!

went to Kings X today to have a quick look at VIA Criterium taking place there over weekend.

Sometimes i'll take a running hydration bladder too if i know it's a really long ride. Although that has it's own challenges as your back gets really sweaty. Think the plan really is to be buying water mid ride to refill.

I need to start checking bikes before rides. Went out yesterday and felt like my back tyre was a bit slidey on corners, especially roundabouts. Finally pulled over after around an hour and the back tyre was around 10psi. I had similar the other week on my off road bike too and didn't even have a pump on me that day. Helps i run 40mm on my road bike and 55mm on my gravel/off road bike so was still rideable.

Can only think it's the heat as the metal shed must be getting >40c inside if not even hotter and then drop to ~20c overnight. Amazing what a properly pumped up tyre feels like afterwards :D

Also my first ride over 50km since about March when i broke my toe. Hoping i can start building up again now. Still never managed to hit 100miles yet!

As a man who has heritage from the warmer parts of the the world I find this time of the year is my time to shine :D

Sadly, my partner who can trace her stock back to the desolate parts of Wales can not hack the heat and turns into a good-mood-vacuum making sure all good vibes are sucked up! She's lucky she builds up so much good will throughout the year that my love can coast through the summer

I find as long as I'm hydrating and having extra electrolytes, I'm fine in the heat. But I really need to have those extra salts because I sweat a lot. I'll take the sweating over risk of sunburn I suppose!

I too hail from a sunless part of the UK. My skin so pale I glisten in the moonlight. I can adapt to the heat but I need some warning. 3-6 weeks of constant exposure on the bike usually works but this little heatwave crept up on me.

London is becoming such a cesspit - I commute an hour from Wandsworth to Weybridge and back most days. On my way through Barnes this morning, a moped (with L plates) fly past me as I was slowing into a roundabout (probably 10m) out and, predictably slammed his brakes on in front of me, so I took evasive action and went down the righthand side of him and we went onto the roundabout side by side.
He then turns to me, shouts something about road tax and spits at me.
Fast forward 500m and he's stuck at traffic lights, and I stop in the traffic about 3 cars back (would normally filter to the bike box, that he is, of course, blocking), but didn't want any hassle - so he then kicks his stand out, gets off his moped and starts walking along the cars hands in there 'whats your f problem, I'll smash your head in' etc. etc. keeps coming at me, fortunately the light turns green and everyone starts beeping him, so he heads back to his moped and speeds off.

What is wrong with people

Still, enjoyed the 1200w adrenaline kick for the next half mile or so :D

Nice! Big change from 25 to 32 - I tend to prefer 28's as found the 32 quite 'boaty' and too big. Very uninspiring on my frame and cornering suffered. Have some GP5000 30's to try next... Played around as had a spare set of tyre inserts and fitted them... Rookie mistake on my older rims (Zipp 30 Course) which are so darn tight it was a struggle I should have stopped. Eventually got 1 on after a few hours of messing but the bead so tight it won't seat, so now working on getting it off...

Bike is looking good!

Some less then ideal overtakes this morning but this driver did not get a free pass from me where I was travelling straight on at 20mph.

Typical 'car brain' move. Report it and see what they respond with. I bet that driver does it to cars there and gets away with it.

Something has to happen soon, driving standards are down the pan. Social media & media backlash is massive to reporters who are just trying to assist. Pressure has to be on Police to enforce, who increasingly say they're under funded and under staffed. Then you hear of the convictions and fines of those guilty actually causing some of the yearly 30,000 KSI figures it's laughable.

Although we still have some of the lowest figures in Europe, no matter what the media would lead you to believe. Can you imagine the flip in road mentality, if BBC and the daily rags where not anti-cycling. they foster and breed the hate.

Defo sounds like you dehydrated and yeah we're not really setup for the hot spell we just had - have to prepare a little better! Plan a stop you know you can refuel at, service station or such. Even catch someone watering their garden with a hose and ask for a top up! Most will do...

For longer summer rides I have a couple of slightly larger 800ml bottles put to one side (normally using 1-2 x 650) but don't really use them. The few times I've been out on a really hot day without a stop planned I put another 650ml in a back pocket. Usually plan to have 1 empty before half way (usually a big climb) so then just carrying an empty bottle in a pocket. A lot less hassle than diverting to find water, or carrying bigger/a bladder.

Dang, some tear to cause that?! Hope all healed and feeling good. Work it back in, get some physio if needed! Carrying a long term injury is no fun, but find your limits with it to be safe first, then if sure gradually .

Yeah temperature swings can cause it, especially if it's been left sat in the shed doing a bunch of them between rides.

A teammate on the weekend doing the Marmotte nearly came off due to a tyre. He thinks he lost 20+psi descending, but had no puncture or incident to lose the air he did, so is blaming it being 15 degrees at the top of the Glandon and then nearly 40 degrees after the descent. Pumped back up and continued, did the Galibier and Alpe afterwards - it was over 40 degrees going up the Alpe! Brutal!

No idea if he's tubed or tubeless...

But heat increases your tyre pressure? Sit at a cycle cafe with bikes in the sun when it's hot and wait to hear some tyres go 'pfffft' as the pressure gets too much! (Or he means they cooled at the top? Even so, it's only 5-8psi, I noticed this when I had tyre pressure monitors fitted... which ironically leaked some air and caused me to have flats  )

What I will say is it was nice using the tiny electric pump rather than hammering away on a normal mini pump :D

Got the week off work and trying to get some regular rides in early whilst being conscious not to ramp up too fast.

This morning I felt a stinging pain in my lower abdomen. Couldn’t see any bug so assumed that a wasp had flown into me and stung my through my top. Then felt another so pulled over and lifted my top/pulled down my bib shorts to look for any evidence and couldn’t see anything.
Got home. Took my shorts off and a bloody wasp flew out! Must’ve fallen down when I was checking for the bites and then just been stuck against my leg. The poor bugger!

It went straight in, although the site gave me a weird reference number which isn't showing anything so not sure if the website broke or just their checker. Is it me or is the BBC particuarly vocal on the anti cycling rhetoric lately?

This morning, once again, no rain expected but dark clouds descended on me as soon as I got the bike out and the heavens opened up as I stepped out. My legs are full of energy after a rest day yesterday and now working all day.
:(

Edit: Status: Course or conditional offer. Looks like they weren't impressed with their driving either.

talking about tiny pumps..

I thought I'll check the battery on mine as it sat in the tool bottle for a few weeks.. guess what, completely dead. Not ideal!

Not gonna lie, thats exactly the sort of thing that puts me off a digital tyre pump. I just carry a CO2 with me these days on most of my rides. I have plenty of electronics to charge (di2, power meter, camera, lights, head unit) but none of these are easily ignored to the point they die and if they are, most of them aren't super important except the di2 and that will have been whinging at me for a few rides at least before it dies so thats my fault at that point.

Forgetting to charge my pump is something I would 100% do.

yup! that's the main reason it'll probably leave my tool storage. I used to run co2 but heard that the cold can damage the tpu tubes I use so it's either pump or electric pump, the pump I've got sadly does not fit anywhere so it's a bit annoying. May have to find something smaller..

I believe it can also damage the sealant but I think thats related to the CO2 instead of the temperature. I'm just lazy about taking a pump out with me.

@grudas that’s unfortunate. I bought this 3 months ago. Only took it out the box a week ago and the first time turning it on was during the ride
