20mph residential speed limit (replacing 30mph)

Most studies have shown in the longer run the average speed in blanket 20s creeps back up to around 26-28MPH while average speed in 30s is 31. Most longer term studies have shown fatalities of pedestrians reduces quite a bit for the first 2-3 years but then returns to what it used to be in the longer run while cyclist fatalities generally doubles after a few years, probably due to a mixture of the lower limits slightly encouraging more people to cycle and the lower traffic limits making it harder for vehicles to pass cyclists, etc. resulting in more incidents.

Said this about cycling from the start.
My ebike goes 15mph.
No way to I want a car passing me at a delta of 5mph!
Thw amount of side by side time is too high. The gap for a car to wait to overtake St that speed is just too high.

Your own argument shows that the problem is ********, who do not have any patience and want to drive however they want, are the problem! "making it harder for vehicles to pass cyclists" If a cyclist is doing 15 in a 20 then have some ******* patience. You, and people like you, just want to be selfish!

Nice trash posting.

My motorbike and the last few other motorbikes i owned hate doing only 20mph and are far from smooth at such a low speed

Think this is due to 1st gear on motorbikes these days are geared for such a high speed to keep the front wheel down
I have no idea what speed my bike 1st is geared for, But i heard of some ltr sportbikes where 1st is geared for somewhere between 90mph to over 100mph

Moved out to Surrey after living in Central London and I thought that was bad, but Surrey is even worse, 20mph every other road and speed cameras coupled with dreadful speed bumps oh and potholes.

Could always slow down to let them pass...

Slow moving vehicles should let traffic go by, though it isn't a requirement for cyclists (probably should be, being the slowest thing with wheels on the road).

And you’ll be overtaken again at the next set of lights in a 20mph zone.

Generally, if you are on an ebike (or can pedal a ‘manual’ bike as quickly, you’ll probably making a lot more progress through a town/city than a car.

So cars should slow down and get out of my way in 20mph zones when Im on my bicycle? Yeah I didnt think so

As a cyclist I usually glance behind at motorist, even move over a bit, to give an indication when I am happy for them to overtake and there is sufficient space,
worst thing as a motorist is blinkered cyclists who show no awareness.

speed cameras in 20's - the police, in Wales, at least, had said there was an introductory period set at 26mph, so shouldn't have a false sense of security if you are driving old speeds.

Can't remember if there is a better thread for this - but I've just spent a week travelling around Wales and the speed limit changes are literal utter insanity in far too many places - OK a few places where it is a good idea but so many places it is just literally pants on head stupid, especially if like I was doing criss-crossing the Welsh/English border quite a bit around Herefordshire.

Can't remember exactly where but somewhere roughly around Hay-on-Wye it went 40, 30, 20 in a few cars lengths, dead straight road past a couple of houses then crossed the border entering a village where it was narrow and winding it changes to 30 (and 20 would actually have been an OK limit there), then 40 past some houses on a straight road then the moment you cross into Wales there is almost a mile of dead straight wide road with a 20 limit that goes straight into an NSL which is a bit twisty :s

It is like entering some alternative reality where people have literally lost their minds.

I’m confused as to why you care, bearing in mind your previous comment about you considering them optional.

Had several cars overtake me in 20 mph zones yesterday and it was only a half hour drive. Many people are really losing patience with it now from what I have seen of people bomb past me through villages

My mum and dad and most of my friends live in Wales, and every time I go back and visit it's seriously hard work. Compounded by the fact that people largely interpret 20mph as 15mph.

I care because I want the roads to make sense and work safely and reasonably for everyone based on reality. You are intentionally misrepresenting my previous comments as well.

Fortunately I didn't encounter that much, had quite a bit of the opposite with people coming flying up behind me doing 40+ in a 20 then making inappropriate overtakes and/or making dangerous overtakes in adjacent areas - at several orders of magnitude more frequently than I normally experience it. The 50s are a mixed bag as well, I'm not that bothered due to driving vehicles with lower limits a lot but loads of places where NSL/70 has been reduced to 50 it is just ridiculous with 60 a more appropriate reduction in some places and I seemed to be in a tiny minority doing 50 outside of where they were enforced by average speed cameras and I can understand why as most people are less patient than I am.

If you're going at 20 or especially less there's a moderate likelihood of being overtaken yes

It's probably really grating for the people who have to commute on those roads every day. Stuck going 15-20mph for miles. It's not suprising they just go **** it. They probably aren't going to get caught if they run Waze all the time.
