BMW and M Power Owners

I would not have expected a wheel bearing to go so quickly. Nor EGR issues.

The insurance on the car is quite expensive. They told me it was because of the cost of parts to repair and quoted some daft price for a headlight as an example.

This latest EGR issue has me somewhat concerned. I have never had to make warranty claims on a car. New or used and 2 on this one has me a bit spooked.

Are they that unreliable/expensive?

If you claim on the warranty, with excess, that's £1742 for that years repairs, assuming you only claim once. That's **** poor value if so!

I wouldn't expect any car that's only 4 years old and with such little mileage on it to need anything so expensive?
My last Service cost me more than that in oil and filters Etc
I dont think you get much for £1700 nowadays with labour rates too

Do people usually ditch run flats for regular tyres?

I've got Bridgestone potenza S001 on the car at the moment and it's so crashy and harsh at low speeds. I know the M140s were always a bit bouncy in stock form but I'm wondering how much of this is tyres?

This is my first experience of run flats, they've got about 4mm of tread so good for a while but I am tempted to swap them out for a bit more comfort at lower speeds.
Also yes. Went from the Pirelli Cinturato run flats to Michelin Pilot Sport 5 all round in Feb 2023. What a difference. The ride is smoother, road noise much reduced and no crashes and bangs over potholes. I doubt I'd go back to run flat again. I don't even carry a can of mousse!

Almost 1 year since i bought the 7 series. I am thinking about BMW insured warranty and wanted opinions.

Car has done 40k. It is a great car, i love it and would prefer to keep it. It is however expensive to run. It had a wheel bearing replaced under approved used warranty at 35k but they would not cover the fact the wheel bearing had caused uneven wear on the brakes and tyre.

luckily the brake wear sorted itself out and saved me £1200 but i replaced the front tyres. Non runflats drive so much better. Michelin e-primacy also added a few MPG.

It currently has a drivetrain fault. BMW have remotely diagnosed this as an EGR fault. Hopefully this will be sorted under approved used warranty which i have until end of August. Trying to get that booked in now.

I have had my quotes for insured warranty renewal. £1492 comprehensive with roadside and £250 excess or £1405 without roadside. I do have lower excess costs but the jump is massive and £250 excess is fine with me.

I took the risk with my F10 and didnt get warranty. That car was a tank and other than regular servicing was rock solid and reliable for years. I am a little more nervous about this one. So many things to go wrong. What is the consensus? Do most go for it on a 4 year old car? or take the risk and YOLO?

I have just renewed the warranty on mine (2020 740d xDrive). Now over 60,000 miles so it's £1800 a year which is expensive. I do have a good relationship with my local BMW dealer though, and you only need one thing to go wrong and it's thousands. Mine's had the front differential replaced - although there was nothing wrong with it - and that would have been £7k...

A specialist is of limited use on a 7 Series because things like the suspension are fairly bespoke. The aftermarket alternatives all sound very hit and miss. I'm more weary of the 100k mile wear and tear exclusion (if I still have it then), but they said most claims go through fine.

It's all about convenience vs risk, I'd rather minimise any risk. My advice would be to run the warranty until at least 100k - paying monthly below 60k miles means you'll keep the lower cost in future, although they could always change that.

Good to hear normal tyres are a noticeable improvement on runflats, I might swap them at some point.

After having my M5 Comp written off, I picked up my new car today to replace it. Its a 22 plate M8 Competition Gran Coupe with 14k miles on the clock. Came with comp, comfort plus and technology plus packs. Apologies for the poop photos, I just grabbed a few quick shots at handover
Love it

Whole range of markings depending on the tyre manufacturer, but normally some variation of RFT, ZP or ROF

Cool, thanks for that. I shall take a look!

I thought having an M140i would be cheap based on what I'd read because it's not a full fat M car but neither is a 20D and those bills sound scary.

Not tight for cash but if BMWs are that likely to throw bills then maybe I should reconsider the warranty :(

That looks killer. Very smart looking

How was the drive back?

Cheers, unfortunately it’s was Friday afternoon traffic, so was just trundling along but that’s ok. Gave me some time to set everything to how I want it. Feels quieter and corners better than the M5 but I guess that’s to be expected as it’s a lower car

Is it otherwise similar spec to your M5, or do you have some new goodies ?

This one has the technology plus pack which the M5 didn’t so it had the horrible HK system but it had the visibility pack. Wasn’t bothered about the laser lights and this one has the adaptive LEDs. The B&W sound system is a definite upgrade sound wise to the HK. This one also has the drivers assistant professional other than that spec wise it’s pretty similar.

How much is the warranty on an M140i? My M340i is only £360 per year with a £250 excess.

The main concern for me is air suspension - and it's covered under the wear and tear guidelines and possibly beyond. The engine and the rest of the car should be pretty robust.

I'd probably leave it on a 140i, it should be fine, and worst case scenario it shouldn't be too bad for things like suspension. The 7 Series air suspension system is around £2k per shock and the same for the compressor - not that you'd typically ever have to replace them all at once.

I'm expecting it all to be fine, but I'd rather not have to worry about it.
