Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

I had the "light misting of oil" on my MK7.5's MOT - it was fine, I asked the mechanic to show me - he said that it was a common failure and didn't really mean much; just to crack on.

I'm (finally) off to r-tech performance on Wednesday to get my Mk5 Golf GTI remapped alongside injector refurb and intake walnut blasting.

Car has Stage2+ hardware (Direnza Intake, GFB Diverter valve, S3 Alloy intercooler, 3" downpipe with 200 cell sports cat, VIS HPFP, VIS Balance Shaft Delete, R8 Red Coil Packs, NGK Iridium Plugs...) and is on Esso Super Unleaded Fuel.

Mechanically all spot on with the timing chain and tensioner replaced, as well as the cambelt... PCV system all updated... its ready for this.

My hope, is 270-280 BHP and 320-330 Lb/Ft torque as its still got a K03 turbo..... However I probably have a weak actuator as its got 186,000 miles !

I'm also playing around with Youtube a bit - primarily for my Cayman - but I've done this video on the Golf, and will do a reaction video after the tune ... will report back on Wednesday evening !

My last 3 VW's, the pinnacle OF COURSE being the Polo!!

Now to get some string back gloves and a heated slipper.

It was one of the first Mk5's on the road as not many were on 54 plates and I managed to luck in on finding one, which I bought same day. Sadly it became somewhat of a jinxed car. About 3 weeks after the photo was taken above, my ex-wife had to swerve to avoid a tractor, in doing so wrecking 2 wheels, 2 tyres and 1 suspension leg. I took it into the dealer and said "just make it new again" with a tear in my eye and a big bill.

A year or so in, parked up, some local farmer drove into it outside local village shop.....

"No problem, I take full responsibility, let me get it fixed and avoid insurance" which to my better instincts I said fine. Bodyshop in Stoke (I felt this looks shady) did the work, looked good on collection and within a week the colour was fading an it just looked rubbish. Drove it for a bit and then binned it for an A4 for the Mrs. Great little car, just jinxed.

Since sold I suspect it's killed 14 new owners and now sits in hell.

That is roughly what I had on mine by the time I sold it, made 270bhp and 310lbft boost was brought in less spikey low down . A lot of maps at the time went with a massive boost spike to make it feel faster but would tail off quickly. Ran Goodyear F1s on it and it put down the power well. Only engine issue was a thermostat around 80k, common issue and stuck open rather than closed so not a huge problem.

I proactively changed the blow off valve a couple of times and the PCV system. I had it from new and sold it at 127k ish it was a great car but had rust coming in it had been through a few heavy Scottish winters 2010-2014 ish which took it's toll on it even cleaning it regularly. If I'd kept it for longer I'd have fitted the k04 turbo.

There's now about 3k on the clock on my R and bar the overzealous emergency breaking nonsense I'm very happy with it. I've done a few 5+ hour drives in it and have found it very comfortable, the wife does too as the carcolepsy kicks in very quickly.

On a long boring drive home on Sunday I used the IQ Travel Assist function. I quite like it, though I did have to turn off the automatic speed response as it'd occasionally pick up a speed sticker on the back of a lorry as the speed limit and try to slow me down to 50mph or would randomly think I'd entered a 30mph zone.

I've bought a few trinkets for it.

- New subwoofer. The HK sub is utter garbage, this one is a lot better.
- Spare wheel, jack and the other required bits. I had a wrecked tyre 600 miles into ownership in the arse end of Cornwall, I had to call the AA.
- Matt carbon mirror caps. I really dislike the silver caps so wanted rid of them.
- Bonnet strut. It should come with one as standard.
- Dynamic wheel caps. I meant to order them with the car but forgot.

Probably a few other bits too that I am forgetting about.

I went from 19" Santiago's to 18" Protrack Ones, definitely helps the ride quality, Going back to Anglesey on the 1st so that'll be the first proper test on the new rims, will be interesting to see how it feels when really pushing.

Quoting myself here, but to answer the above, the car handled great on the Protrack 18" rims, but sadly the AS6 suffered! I was pushing harder this time, and there isn't a lot left on them now sadly. Great day though! :D

Second track day at Anglesey last week, such a good track and we had the best weather, great mix of cars and guys, and some really good laps! Had to fill up mid way through the day!

I'm back !

Long day. But the short version is this. 285 BHP. 349 LB/FT. Smooth curves, loads of area under them.

Transformed. Drives like it could be a stock map if that makes sense.

Can't recommend R-Tech enough. Thoroughly brilliant team.

I will do a longer post and what not along with the dyno print out in due course.

Next question, what's the risk with the Golf R at the moment, has it declined as being a target?

I'm looking for something newer and searching within in any price range there are loads more R cars compared to GTIs

I leased it for my better half, replacing her A5, but since I sold my rapid cars I find myself driving the Golf and she nicked my 5 Series, which is fine by me for now.

Just pinged off a quote request to Royal Steering Wheels - mine has gone shiny, so asking for perforated leather sides, normal top and bottom with red stitching. Anyone had one off them recently and can share details/quality etc?

Whilst you might want a retrim anyway, a shiny steering wheel will often come up good again simply with a decent clean - I used a leather cleaner on the vRS (even if it's not necessarily real leather) and it was like brand new afterwards.
