What film did you watch last night?

Ju-On: The Curse (on Shudder)

Strange ongoings for people that enter a house in Japan…

I ****ing love this series, yet I hadn’t got around to see the ‘OG’ Japanese film until now, which was a 4:3 format video only release.

It’s budget and amateur in places but still racks up tension masterfully. A lot of the later films and the American sequel-remake (The Grudge) copied a lot of eerie moments from this, but the order of events and characters are almost completely different, so it felt like a different take on a film I already like.

Once aspect was very dark and disturbing, which I hadn’t seen in the other Ju-On films:

… the ‘guy’ throwing around the ‘sack’

Downsides was some extremely budget CGI, which resulted in a laugh, plus the abrupt ending. Still, very effective at times and me and my partner were pretty creeped out. You could not pay me to go in that house!!!

I look forward to watching the sequel, ‘The Curse 2’, which preceded ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’.

8/10

Other half hadn’t seen it so gave it a watch, nice heartfelt movie, plenty of laughs and jokes you don’t quite appreciate when watching it as a youngster.

Oooo another one. Will check it out. Keep the suggestions coming thanks.

One good one I can recommend that I watched quite a while back is Dark water. Japanese one not the US remake with Jennifer Connelly. It was quite spooky if I recall and particularly good use of sound.

Dracula: A Love Tale

The weirdest Dracula movie I have seen. Great cast, directed by Luc Besson but so strangely put together with some very bizarre choices on the classic Dracula story. I laughed out loud at some scenes which I don't think was the intended effect. For fans of the general story it might be worth a watch just to see such a strange take and it is well acted but the actors just have such a strange script/direction to work with it just leads to so many 'wtf' moments. Appreciate the effort of a slightly different take but it did not work.

4/10

Love Lies Bleeding (2024)

Billed as a romantic thriller, but more of a crime thriller with a lesbian affair between a gym manager and a body builder at its centre. It's actually a decent watch with some slightly weird or out of place scenes, particularly the ending. The ending was partially foreshadowed if you didn't blink during one scene.

6/10

The Amateur - 6/10

It was okay. Almost seemed a little basic, but enjoyable enough I suppose. I think I perhaps just couldn't get past why they shot his wife exactly. "To show them what would happen if they didn't let us go!" (Or something along those lines) Yes, but now you just shot your hostage... why would they then let them out? Did I miss something?

Was there a sequel ever in the works?

I can’t remember exactly how it ended but I think I recall the ending was set up for another movie. Hope we get another as it’s a really good movie.

The film ends when Alita being a mega star of Motorball . . . and probably about to become the Grand Champion (and therefore being allowed to go to Zalem (or so you think) . . . Perfectly placed to be the start of a 2nd film . . .

Deadpool vs Wolverine

First time I've seen it since the cinema. If you're looking at it critically there are flaws and the plot is a little lacking. But it's incredibly funny, the references are absolutely spot on, the cast is top notch throughout and it's just so much fun

Are you going to watch FF as well later on?
I don't think so no, at this point i'll just wait for the Disney+ release!

We watched KPop Demon Hunters tonight at the request of my kid (who's already seen it twice!).

Surprisingly good, 8/10 for me! Very catchy songs as Kpop tends to be.
