is it for portal though ? thats the key question.

Yeah portal only

Its going to be within portal no matter what, but the fact that he says "you can join an existing server or create your own" sounds pretty similar to a non-portal server browser

I don't have time to look for the post right now but the server browser they are implementing isn't really a browser like the old days, you can only find servers that are running. Sound great? Kinda...problem is matchmaking is just cost saving exercise for EA. Servers spin up and then when the round is over close and you get sent to another. In the good old days your favourite community server would be running 24/7, server empty? No problem, just join and with a bit of luck it will start to fill up. Doesn't sound like you'll be able to find that awesome server you played on last night with the new server browser unless someone keeps making it.

Only I'm way off the mark but that's what the post made it sound like. I'll try and find it later when I get time.

If you can only find servers that are running, then what did the lead producer mean when he said "or create your own server"? Surely in order to be able to create a server of your own it must have not been running in the first place? :)

yeah he didnt say portal only but that is the key thing....if it is portal only this could be a game killer.
Even if you can create your own servers on it? What about if you could create a server, pick the maps, set the server rules etc, but its in portal, would that still be a game killer? Isnt that then pretty much the same as the non-portal server browser?

That's exactly how Portal worked in 2042 - and it was always relatively easy to find a full server, even with 2042 having hardly any players. It was always really handy whenever they launched a new map as there would be tons of servers setup (will full XP) that were just the new map 24/7 (or the new map + a reworked map on rotation).

I get the need/want for a server browser, I'd like one to exist too - I just don't think it'll be a 'game killer' if it's not there at launch in the format everyone wants.

From what that Lead Producer said, it sounds like they are going to have a server browser, its just that the browser will be integrated within Portal, so I'm trying to fathom out , if theres a browser and its within portal and you can create your own servers on it, hows that any different ? People keeping saying its different but nobody has actually explained to me yet what and how its different

Well if the servers you create last for more than one round then that would be fine. Problem with current matchmaking is servers seems to spin up for one round and then close and you get put into a separate version.

It hasn't been officially started it's for portal only but that female dev/producer who asked why everyone wants a server browser said it's currently for portal only in a follow up tweet.

What the deal with portal anyway? I only played 2042 beta so never tried portal but everyone is acting like if its only portal then that's bad. But from my ignorant understanding it sounds like you can just play BF like normal but also with custom game types. Is that right?

Thats one of the reasons why we need to see how its being implemented, the lead producer said that their BF6 server browser implementation will be the best of both worlds, so maybe it will be servers that can be up properly, who knows maybe even with admins and the like....just within portal. I dont see that it being in portal is a game killer, it surely depends upon how its in portal that matters

I find if you stay the game tends to put you back on the same map and team, it's annoying playing liberation peak 7 times in a row just to stay in a squad

I often get put back on the same map but ive never been put back in the same squad or team which is annoying when you get a good random squad. TBF there's only 3 maps to choose from so the likelihood of being on the same map again is pretty high.

The only difference sounds like it'll be including the 'official servers' within the Portal server browser. So you'll see Tombstone's server, you'll see my server - but you'll also see 'DICE server' for the games that are played without going via the server browser. Exactly as it was pre-2042.

Possibly, but I hear that on Tombstones Server you get free cookies, so everyone will be there :)

Does that mean server browser = buy?

Depends on if we get a better look at the game and vehicles, so far the maps are nothing but infantry meat grinders, the controls for the helicopters are pathetic. I generally play as a tanker so if they're up to snuff it would interest me more, but no server browser for me is a deal breaker, there's absolutely no reason why they cant implement this, it's one of the oldest staples of the online fps genre, yet dice seem to want to retire it for some reason.

What aspects of a server browser is it that you'd want to see? I ask because a lot of people keep saying server browser but dont elaborate on what it actually is that they want from the server browser

A standard server browser like we had in past games, filter by game type, size, map, ping, favourites, etc. They managed a server browser in every other game besides 2042, now for some reason it's some weird question mark as to if they will do it or not.

And if the have that but in Portal, would that be ok for you?
