What film did you watch last night?

Dog Soldiers (4K) - 6.5/10.

A fun film, but the cinematography is absolutely gash, regardless if it was filmed on a budget and being 23 years old. I think it stripped it of any real intensity. Sean Pertwee and Alex McKidd are clearly having a lot of fun though. Also glad I watched the 4K version, as I can imagine it would have looked even worse on older releases!
Saw it at the cinema when it came out. Great fun!

Sounds like you’re a 28 Inches Hater ;)
you gotta wonder how he ran with that thing! you'd think it would trip him up all the time.

Anyway, last night i started the run through of Bond Films. Dr. No. great film, Connery at his best. 8/10

Godzilla Tokyo SOS (2003) - not a good one, it had mothra in it trying her best but, mothra. 4/10

The Northman 5/10. It's ok, somewhat hammy/cliche dialogue, but the best part was the almost completely naked Anya Taylor-Joy in parts of the film.

Latest mission impossible. 8/10
Found the first 30 mins quite uninteresting decent after that
Started this last night, but 3hr movie! Did an hour and a half and will finish tonight.

The first 30mins seemed a recap - maybe for those who hadn't seen the first and a reminder to us that had! It was also a nice homage to all the characters and big action scenes from the previous movies, which was nice. Bit of a swan song for TC and the MI franchise.

But yeah, it's started to pick up nicely. Although, we are finally seeing TC age - anybody else think he is morphing into Norm MacDonald?

The Right Stuff (1983)

A Christopher Nolan recommended film that I've never heard of, let alone seen. But it's based on true events and the early space missions, so what's not to like? Apart from the 192 minute runtime, not a lot. To be fair it never seems to drag and with such a great cast, visuals and sound design, theres little to fault in Nolan's recommendation.

8/10

Dog Soldiers contains one of my favourite film lines ever.

  • Sergeant Harry Wells: I am not breaking radio silence just cos' you lot got spooked by a dead flying ******* cow.

Together. Body horror that doesn't quite work. There are a few gross out scenes and one funny moment with Chekov's handsaw but honestly I'd probably skip it if you're on the fence 5/10

Honestly, I think this is a film where a 4K release hurt more than it helped.

The life of Chuck - enjoyable, highly watchable about the life and death of a man called Chuck! Split into 3 acts and in reverse chronological order. Nothing inventive about it but the first act is brilliant, 2nd act is good and 3rd act is meh but worth a watch.

7.5/10

Eddington (at the cinema)

A small town in New Mexico becomes divided in a mayoral election.

I had very high expectations, being an Ari Astar (director) fan and did find it disappointing, in truth. Combo breaker. But there’s bemusement and intrigue to be found… if you’re prepared to wait…

It’s never as outright silly and in your face as 2001’s ‘Don’t Look Up’ but that’s the broad territory that Eddington is in, with ridicule at hypocrisy of modern politics and conspiracy theories.

Ultimately, it was nowhere near as funny or profound as ‘Beau is Afraid’, and the various skews on political beliefs and themes, especially with the curve ball ‘outro / epilogue’, just made it feel like a cacophony by the end.

There were at least a few chuckles. My favourite storyline was probably:

… the kid falling over himself to extreme ‘woke’ beliefs in order to impress a girl.

It was also impossible to see where it was going, classic Astar, which I always appreciate.

7/10 - sometimes clever, sometimes funny, but not the pinnacle of either.

Edit - updated score:

In hindsight, I think I will ‘upgrade’ my score to 7/10.

Astar’s films linger on my mind like a rich, smokey whisky does on my tongue… sometimes it feels as though you can still taste them the next day. I like that they have that effect on me.
