It doesn’t apply to any specific line of questioning / criticism in this thread but the above reference to Star Wars has reminded me of this low rumbling annoyance I have with social media commentary re: films / TV.
The criticism I get annoyed at is: ‘the way this happened didn’t make sense in the context of ‘lore / universe’. It’s often used as if it’s some sort insightful observation that justifies an emotional response, whereas it often looks to me as if it’s backwards reasoning; someone isn’t enjoying something so they pick on this weird little thing, whilst ignoring absolutely glaring flaws in other films etc.
Case in point: Star Wars, Empire Strike Back. Everybody loves this film but if you think about it, the part on the Asteroid makes absolutely no sense - the vacuum of space suddenly ceases to exist and they all go off for a jolly without depressurising the ship.
I can choose to let that ruin the film for me, or I can choose to suspend my disbelief and conjure up reasons that enable what I see on screen. I tend to choose the outcome that has the positive result; there was probably some force field around the ship, or the worm created its own atmosphere. Whatever. Or, I accept that it doesn’t make much sense and enjoy it for what it is supposed to be - fun.
I do tend to watch films / TV ‘emotionally’ though so I can appreciate others that fixate on how things are delivered can view things another way - we’re all different. I remember enjoying Rise of Skywalker in the cinema but have had to concede that in the cold light of day and fair criticisms, that was a pile of doo doo.
Uh, late night ramblings from me… maybe the point I’m going for is… relaxed viewing is more enjoyable than defensive viewing.
