Unreal Engine 5 - unbelievable.

Are you claiming that all UE5 titles stutter? That's not correct.

I'm not claiming all of them stutter, just that it's far too easy for developers to get into a situation where their game will stutter. Even Epic have fallen into their own trap in the past with Fortnite (whether it's fixed now I don't know, I haven't played it for ages).

Can't say as though I've ever noticed stutter on Fortnite, although I'm a PS5 player ;)
I think the stuttering issues are generally worse on PC. I wouldn't be surprised if the consoles' unified memory architecture helps (as well as the PS5's super fast and well-integrated storage system).

And that's fine, but Tim/Epic was suggesting devs are only not optimising for low end hardware - effectively Epic is deflecting blame and saying if your new UE5 game doesn't run well it's because your PC is **** and you should upgrade
He's probably not wrong since theres plenty lf ue5 games thats performance is fine or scales fine

Par for the course with unreal. stuttering issues for over a decade nothing is going to change anytime soon. I just stopped playing games on ue.

There is like one or two ue5 games that run decent... the finals and uhhhhh i cant think of a second. Lost soul aside (ue5 game) just launched and has stuttering issues. Hell is us in a few days (wasnt too bad in the demo but thats in a small linear area). Cronus (made by the guys who made stutter hill 2 and the medium) so i have no hope for that.

Hellblade 2, Black Myth, Everspace 2, Manor Lords 2, Split, Tempest rising, Robocop are great looking well running games (if Demanding in Black Myths case).

For me the common point is its AAA games that run bad not ue5, plenty of ithet non ue5 aaa games that run like poop.

EA WRC also had hilarious stuttering on release. It's better now but A) No where near perfect and B) Will never be perfect as EA shut down the rally side of Codies

There's a dev interview with Bloober re: Cronos and why UE5 was used, quite good:

Notably:

Which Unreal Engine features stood out to you most during development?

MS: During the development of Cronos, we used World Partition for the first time (all our previous titles were based on World Composition). This feature allowed us to create a richer world while keeping the memory budget in check. Additionally, the background level streaming hitches we encountered in the past were greatly reduced with this approach. Lumen is also worth mentioning, as the performance improvements compared to our previous experience with it (our last game used UE5.1) are significant. These advancements have enabled our lighting artists to craft a more sophisticated and immersive horror atmosphere.

The game’s Merge mechanic is designed to escalate enemy threats and keep players on their toes. Were there any specific UE5 features that helped you get the design and execution of this mechanic just right?

MS: The merge mechanic leverages advanced Niagara features to create a visually convincing and eerily captivating effect. Niagara’s exceptional flexibility, performance, and memory efficiency—especially when handling VFX ribbons and skeletal mesh sampling—are truly impressive, providing our VFX artists with significant creative freedom.

And all that about a very average in reviews game, which is horribly optimized and needs 5090 to barely cross 60fps in 1080p full details with RT. And where turning RT on and off changes so little visually (whilst eating nearly half the FPS) that most commented under article thought reviewer swapped screenshots. Whatever such Devs say my response is they need to work way harder on their future games unless their goal is to produce stress benchmarks and not playable games.

I forgot to update the comment with an edit to add the performance issues yeah!

Essentially it has launched like Callisto Protocol did as it turns out!
