The Fairchild Ghost. Subwoofer project.

OK. So with the new machine up and firing on all cylinders I set about finishing all of the machining. And I won.

First up were 8 15mm magnet spacers from an old piece of white 5mm.

I did not realise you can set tabs to be singular and tiny. So I did.

Those are all filed and done. Next up carbon.

If you look closely you will see the dot in the first i went flying. Sadly so did the second one. As such I just machined four with small tabs. I then moved onto the main event. This took 1hr 20 mins. On the old machine it would have been about 4 hours.

Like, it's so good you can barely even make out the machining marks.

I need to carefully clean the carbon parts now, and file off the tabs from two of the i dots.

Also a lesson if you get this machine. DO NOT run the hoover whilst it is running. It causes a static short that enables the limit switches. Thankfully I did this as it was returning to base after cutting all of the carbon. Or it would have been a costly mistake.

Funny, I was thinking exactly that....and then, of course, I was wondering what wood or acrylic I need for my build! :D Now, can it handle 43cm long acrylic slabs?! :D

No. However.....

All you'd need to do is get a whacking long piece of the "screw bar"?. I was worried it may not be long enough to still use the manual control and it wasn't but I put the bearing carrier inside which gave me enough. Indeed its available for sale.

You'd also need to make your own sides obs but that should be easy for you dude.

Another thing I clocked when spending 7 hours peeing with it is that there is no backlash spring. Instead the brass carriers bolt into clamps. I could trigger the backlash spring myself pretty easily on the old machine.

Ah, I feel you missed my point. My plan didn't involve modifying anything....just abusing your machine :D
"Lead screw" is what you're after. Usually an Acme thread...but with no coyotes in sight. "Proper" backlash-free lead screws are ball screws - kind of the screw variety of a linear bearing.
I do plan to do some acrylic blockwork....or at least have a go. Machine I have in mind is a CNC router aimed at wood....but it does have a 12 foot bed! Most importantly, it belongs to a friend of mine's company so I'm hoping to 'play' with it after hours.... when I get that far, of course!

well maybe one day I will try and make it even larger. Would be nice if I could make it MATX case panel size tbh.

Front badge done. Did get some glue on it (I hate super glue) and thought about maybe clear coating it. So to find out how it would look I used some clear lamination vinyl. I hated how it looked, so it can stay as it is.

Magnets are all glued onto their spacers now.

I then spent a couple of hours moving everything around and laying down the tarp so I don't get paint anywhere. Was going to rest up today but decided it is better to do that tomorrow. So paint will start on Thurs.

Thanks man. So I bought a Lazy Susan.

I set it up on Weds evening before turning in. Sadly yesterday and today was just me in bed with terrible guts. Ahhh IBS how I missed you (yes I am being super sarcastic :D )

I also managed to break my new CNC machine this morning. See, when you have to go potty 11 times in one day there will be one of those times where you are not used to the bulkier machine. And it's then that you will kick one of your freshly made yellow side panels and snap it in half. Fegger, megger egger etc.

*sigh*. Oh well. Not sure I have time to do anything more now before my holiday next Sunday but it is what it is. I need to return home to get ready for that on Monday. Just depends what my bottom decides it wants to do tomorrow I guess.

I did make about 3 litres of butter nut squash soup though, so I will be enjoying a bowl before bed.

Yup to rotate it without moving it. I've got a dewalt tool box with a piece of mdf on and then the lazy susan.

I thought I'd be able to walk around it but no.

Finally out of bed after nearly 3 days. Taken some painkillers for the first time in as many days too.

OK so using scrap pink vinyl I made these.

I don't want the threads getting clogged. Would be very hard to tap, as they do not go through the wood. Any way, coat one of sealer.

Which as you can see was drying before I even took a pic. Second coat done.

I also bought some Dyna Mat Xtreme. Just to deaden it that wee bit more.

All going well it will be painted white this time tomorrow.

IBS.... Butternut squash? Not sure if you're speaking literally or describing the potty contents...

hahahaha.

It wasn't the squirts. The opposite... Because of the rain my arthritis and ex broken bones hurt so bad I took two doses of painkillers a day. Which resulted in nothing for about 2 days. This is not good for me, being an IBS sufferer. So I had to have three days off the painkillers which meant going a lot (11 times yesterday fgs) but not runny. It also meant savage withdrawal and serious joint pain because I could not take any painies. I wish I could take Ibuprofen but I can't because it messes up my stomach something rotten.

I make a wonderful butter nut squash soup. Problem is I could not find any already prepped and my hands are not good enough to peel and cut one now. Finally found some, made my famous soup. Went down a treat tbh !

yeah as a fellow ibs and arthritis sufferer i totally understand the way those two or should i say the meds to treat one can really set the other one off and yeah ibuprofen [and i think most nsaids in that family] most of them as far as i know tend to have that same issue with basically not being very kind on the stomach to put it mildly
and sometimes i find the stress related to not taking the pain relief can also some times actually set of the ibs its a weird kind of vicious circle
unfortunately neither of these conditions are exactly known for exactly getting better either
hope things improve for you and thank you for sharing your project i can imagine this being a fairly large project even for someone in perfect health for someone who isnt its genuinly impressive.

Never underestimate a good poo tbh. My mates must think I'm nuts but a good poo means a good day. No bloating, no pain and cramps and I can take my pain killers and get on with my day. My entire day literally starts with a poo tbh. And can mean a good or horrible day.

As for Ibuprofen? Man. When it was first released my doctor put me straight on it. I started having nasty "foamy" type poos and terrible cramps. When I told him of it he said "don't talk daft that's impossible!".

And now? It's a known fact ffs.

Right well today started well and I'm one coat of gloss down. 30 mins and its round two. Update to come later.

OK so yeah, today in a nut shell. Mask (this was a pain big time)

0IwphXk.jpg

I put a fine line masked edge as I've never met a tape that doesn't bleed. Coat one.

You'll note the grille in the background.

Coat two.

Tomorrow I shall finally play with this toy I bought about a year ago and never used.

OK so it is all painted and the grille is done. The grille needs the inner corners tidying. Probably with a lighter tbh. Was very hard to work with.
