What film did you watch last night?

Weapons - 6.5/10.
Was alright. Much like Barbarian it has some cool ideas and scenes (The kitchen then subsequent petrol/liquor store) but doesn’t quite hit the mark for me on the whole. Seemed a little underwritten.

Indeed. It got to the point that I was surprised no one had commented on her pointy elbows or something.

SMG? Knees way too sharp for me personally

You Only Live Twice (1967)

Easily the weakest of all the Bonds up to this point. It's clear by the end that most of the budget must have gone on the volcano battle. Plus the early Bonds haven't aged particularly well in terms of acting, dialogue, fight choreography and the technical limitations of the time. Not to mention the portrail of women, in terms of being ok to slap around or be forced upon and then they readily give in.

4/10

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

Although Lazenby's acting is a weak point and men are still punching women, the rest of the film is pretty good for its time. The score is a particular stand out and I think Lazenby's physicality easily out shines Connery's.

6/10

Death Race 2000, a race across America in which contestants need to run down people to gain points to win.

Know of the film for years but first time watching it, must have been a low budget affair from the 70's but the 90 minutes passed easily enough due to its fun premise and unlike a lot of stuff I will remember it the film and characters a week from now.

Just watched Greyhound.
I've always wanted to watch this, but being only on Apple tv. I stupidly missed watching it, when I subbed just to watch Masters Of The Air(a let down).

Tom Hanks plays a 1st time destroyer captain, escorting a merchant convoy across the Atlantic, when submarine "wolf packs" stalked & picked them off in the period of the crossing when there was no air support & the story, inspired by true events & written by Tom Hanks follows the journey.
Mr Hanks acts it as he does in Saving Privately Ryan, although not to those levels, as the film isn't on that level.

That said I enjoyed it. I haven't seen a film from that side of ww2, especially when you think of it in the opposite context of the excellent Das boot.
The action scenes are pretty good & it does a reasonable job of drawing you into the tension they feel.
The worst part is everytime there is a scene with a submarine, there is some kind of weird whale sound music.
7.5/10.

Goodfellas

It wasn't long ago that I saw this, but I couldn't resist checking it out for the umpteenth time.
What a movie. Brilliant directing and performances all around.

The bit where De Niro has a telephone cord around Morri's neck, and then his wig comes off!
Ray Liotta's laugh!

Casino

Now, I haven't seen for a little while, and just maybe, it's my favourite out of the two. Superb.

I remember the scene in the cornfield at the end being quite a shock to see for the first time. It still is.
However, Nicky and his brother were murdered, IIRC, in a basement somewhere.
Of course, regardless, it's still a truly awful end to their lives, but as is often the case in movies, some details were altered for various reasons.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I was glad you clarified, while reading I was wondering if it was the Jason statham one or the original !

Ring Kanzenban (1995) 7/10 better than I expected!

So.... before the cinema film Ringu, there was a TV movie based on the ring book.
Seems I have totally fell down the rabbit hole (well!) with this now.

I can be quite obsessive with things, clearly my halloween/October watching 2025 is J horror.

I could have done without finding there were two tv series..... luckily, not the easiest to source!
Edit! someone has upoladed it all on Youtube.....

God Bless America (2011) - 8/10

Loveless, jobless, possibly terminally ill, Frank has had enough of the downward spiral of America.
With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun and offs the stupidest, cruelest, and most repellent members of society.
He finds an unusual accomplice: 16-year-old Roxy, who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement.

Master and Commander 10/10

Haven’t watched it in a long time but it’s just came out on 4k :)

Simply brilliant. Loyalty, duty, friendship and brotherhood.

Surprisingly funny in parts also.
Ah, I wanted to rewatch this, I’ve not seen it in at least 10 years, but didn’t fancy paying full price just yet. Hopefully it’ll be in a deal sometime soon!

Tár. 8/10. Very long and slow movie but interesting enough to keep me watching for the whole two and a half hours. Quite difficult to follow some of the details, not made easier by some overly intellectual dialogue, albeit beautifully written. I had to google the plot after to make sense of a few things that I didn't understand or follow properly. Definitely worth watching at least once though.

I think there is always something a bit lost in translation with Bond movies although probably a hard sell with a movie - Fleming's Bond was not supposed to be a good guy or glamorous, but he was our bad guy so to speak - deplorable but necessary. Things like the treatment of women was not supposed to be an accepted thing of the era so to speak.

I do miss the 3 for 30 hah. Superb transfer. Some complain about the bass getting turned down but that was for the benefit of dialogue which was crystal clear!!

Legend (2015)

A film about the Kray twins that in all honesty doesn't do anything that the Kemp brothers didn't do in 1990. Tom Hardy is decent playing both twins, but that's about it. Bang average.

5/10
