Welp. I'm going PS when the 6 comes out. I'll keep using my Xbox as I can't really justify a new PS 5 (Pro) and all the new games I'd have to buy but thankfully I also have a Switch 2 which is great for the time being.

I find the base level PSN still quite good value. I like the free games that you get. Granted, not every month is a banger but there are enough per year that justify the £50 a year cost. At least those won't get taken away from your library as long as you subscribe, whereas on Game Pass, games leave Game Pass alll the time but it doesn't leave my PSN library once claimed, again, as long as I sub to it, which is no different to GPU as long as I sub to that.

this was always going to happen, get everyone on it at a low price and get the userbase then once you have that ramp up.
expect it will be closer to £50 in the next 5 years

but they did ramp it up! i used to pay £1 for the year, and stack 3 years. Now it's £15 per month, so that was the jump. £23, although only £8 more, it's hard to justify.

MS trying to kill off Xbox brand asap. Console sales so low most shops don't even sell them anymore, hardware price Increases, game pass price Increases and most games going multiplat. Probably worth getting out of Xbox to one of the alternatives at this point.

Seems odd. They were just boasting about how the money get get from GP is hitting new records. and the money is in the games, not the console sale. doesn't seem like ms have any interest in killing the xbox to me.

i will likely just got to Game pass core, as that gets the online function, however i'm curious what am i paying for? i play DBD mostly. so need the online, but doesn't DBD have it's own servers. so what does my money go towards?

Can you get game codes for the playstation online from other regions and register vpn to your account like you can with the xbox? Whilst the increase to gamepass is annoying (its just gone from $28NZD to $46NZD) I can still register game keys from Argentina etc. via a VPN to my account... that alone means I'm hardly paying for the games compared to retail and mostly should fill the void for GPU.

Into Microsoft's bank account to plough towards AI & shareholders. There's obviously some small infrastructure for the store front, hosting, friends lists, voice comms over Xbox Live etc. that does need servers, but this should really be covered by the 30% share from selling on their own ecosystem, i.e. similar to how Valve doesn't charge. But unfortunately Console manufacturers have long been able to make a lot of money from this additional revenue.

With regards to the other point, Microsoft did confirm record highs of $5bn revenue and Sarah Bond said 'it's a profitable business', but the comma did a lot of heavy lifting in that statement as they never actually said 'Game Pass is profitable'. The lack of transparency is obviously going to make people suspicious even if it is likely profitable. I suspect a big problem Microsoft has is that the majority of Game Pass customers are Xbox Console users and not-PC, or cloud. And what little we do know is that growth of Game Pass seized up as Xbox Console sales have cratered. Therefore as it continues it's slow exit from the traditional console business into these new Windows 11 OEM Consoles MS needs to try and keep those customers. So it makes sense for Game Pass to be more a 'content' subscription where you can play your games anywhere. But the big issue is that PC is dominated by Valve and I suspect without the traditional, cheap, subsidised console you have far less of an 'trojan horse' with which to attract those customers.

However I'd guess these price hikes are driven more by short-term aggressive targets, rather than fundamental long-term strategy as they have shifted focus back towards PC/Windows 11. But who knows.

There are some bonuses that people aren't talking about.

Yes ultimate is more expensive but ultimate has been the only way to get day 1 games for a while now. Whilst the price increase sucks we do get more games, likely more high quality day 1 releases compared to previous years, higher quality streaming and for those who care fortnite club (handy for some who also pay for it for a kid, they will now save money if they previous bought both)

but the bigger thing now, is that all tiers get cloud streaming that was previous exclusive to ultimate. Whilst the two lower tiers haven't changed price at all.

Day 1 release of garbage is still garbage.

Unjustified increase in my opinion and when mine runs out it will not be renewed and a few of my mates will have to jump on the PC train.

well , 3 months left on my 3 yrs gamepass..come 2nd jan, think I'm done...even essential at £10 for online gaming is too much...£120 a year..no thanks, not when pc online is free. for £50 a year would just pay for online access, but that's about it...guess this is the kick to fully move from xbox to pc full time. I have to pay for 2 subs at mo as 2 boys, so to play together I link with one of them, and then other needs his own gamepass...just too much to pay.
Feels kind of strange, I've been paying each year since the original xbox launched back in 2002...wow, 23yrs loyal customer but this price rise has done me

I've just had my email.

Not sure how a 50% increase can be justified, particularly with the disappointing game line up.

I've been toying with cancelling my GPU sub for a few months anyway, and this has made the decision for me.

Disappointing, but hey ho, them's the breaks.

I just don’t see how Microsoft genuinely thinks this helps

Xbox is lagging behind Sony drastically units are not shifting, price increases there don’t help

Of course upping game pass is yet more expense, I don’t see how this helps there brand long term.

Since they are already porting most of their games to PlayStation I wouldn't be surprised if they offer game pass on there as well. Just a guess but I wouldn't be surprised.

Xbox has no interest in catching up with sony they can't and have already said this. All they care about is having there games on every platform. I honestly don't see a point in owning a Xbox anymore what's the benefit of buying into there brand?

I do have a series x still don't use it much and going to cancel my game pass only thing which has changed really is cod being on there last year since they took over. Other than that I don't see how they got to this price increase?
