Decent game controller?

The G7 Pro wins in every area other than dpad, I might even go as far to say it beats Nintendo dpads, and I've always praised those as being the benchmark on how a dpad should feel.

It's missing stuff the G7 has though, no back buttons, no microswitch hair trigger mode, there is lockout switch but it's a digital lockout and not mechanical, and the membrane ABXY buttons require a bit more pressure than GameSir buttons, though this is an EasySMX trait so not anything out of the norm.

The sticks have no filtering so debounce from edge to centre is perfect.

If they fix the hair trigger detection with an update then it's great at ~£30 for someone looking for a controller that offers the core basics and doesn't care about the extra customisations I reckon.
G7 Pro vs. the Hexgaming controller?

I'm still using my Dualsense Edge at the minute on PC but very tempted by the Pro, it's 89.99 at Argos at the minute!

That's a harder comparison as both are different types of controller, but I do find the hexgaming sticks to feel more natural, its stick curve is calibrated from factory to feel a certain way for both hall effect and potentiometer versions. I use both for whichever feels better in any given game, but always use the hex in games with native dualsense support.

G7 Pro has its convenience with the extra buttons as can game record, screenshot etc from those buttons whereas have to reach over to the keyboard with the other controllers. The rumble/haptics on dualsense is nicer than other controllers too so for improved immersion I do prefer that.

Cheers, appreciate that.

Really been enjoying the Dualsense Edge for FPS games these past 2 weeks, feel like I've got myself back to where I felt on controller around 18 months ago and can compete now vs. mouse & key players on The Finals. Also just generally useful then playing games like Arc, Ghost of Yotei, Helldivers 2 etc. that I would normally play on controller and not have that adjustment period of swapping back from M&KB to controller.

I've got 2 spare sticks for the Edge so have sent them off to a company in Stoke who will upgrade the modules to TMR sticks, hoping that should mean I don't have to worry about drift on the Edge for a little while longer but will maybe provide a bit of feedback once they've arrived to see how they feel.

In an amusing turn it seems the DualSense controller's internal microphone is actually a VERY good PC mic too, just plug in via USB and put the recording volume to max and that's it, you have a desktop mic that can sit far away and still be perfectly clear/clean suitable for calls/Discord etc.

Was not expecting that.

One of the benefits of gaming on PS5 now is that most players are using their microphone. The downside is that people don't realise the controller mic is on and all you here is frantic button pressing and parents shouting at children/pets.

So the new Steam Controller then, it looks amazing?

Guess I need to get one then....

You treat yourself petal, we know you are a bit short on controllers.

I don't see what's great about it from the pics at least, I'm not going to be using trackpads for anything, and the most comfy controller to me is the Switch 2 pro controller of which this looks nothing like. Good it's got analogue triggers though, I am just not sure on the use case for it for people who already have and are content with their current wireless controllers.

So I'm 100% going to be picking up the Steam controller when it releases (although I have really enjoyed the Dualsense Edge - coming up on 3 years of owning it next Jan).

The only thing I'm a little iffy on is the polling rate... I've seen notes that its only 250hz (maybe 500hz?) - and whilst I'm sure it's placebo, I do like my 1000hz Dualsense Edge on PC right now for my competitive games. I've hit diamond (top 2k players) in Finals again this season and the first time doing it on controller since S1 and S2 - and I'm now a sucker for this gamepad thing.

I found no noticeable difference with dual sense on PC between default 250 and OCd 1000Hz in any game.

Hey mrk, do you know if they've addressed the issue you had with the triggers yet? (and to make sure I'm understanding you, it switches to digital mode regardless of the position of the mode switches?)
Also, is the grip material like that 'soft touch' rubber stuff? I have a bitfenix shinobi case and it's gone quite sticky with age!

Been looking for a new controller for a while - I'm not that fussy, still using a wired original 360 controller which is fine, but it's seen better days. Wireless would also be nice to have.
Didn't really want to pay a huge amount, but at current BF/voucher prices I might take a punt on it.

TIA!

No fix as of yet, a beta firmware I tested just increased the actuations to 5 which is still pointless but no proper fix, I actually don't think it can be fixed short of them turning off digital mode entirely. Seems a design flaw to me.

The grip surface finish is rubbery yeah.

Use isopropyl alcohol that'll remove the stickyness.

Hmm, may give it a pass then... maybe just double my budget and splurge on a cyclone2 after some drinks :D

Thanks, I'd heard washing up liquid could get it off too... I might do it at some point but it's just a junker case that my build is 'temporarily' in for troubleshooting... I have another case ready to rebuild with watercooling so I just need to stop procrastinating! (although might clean it up for a second build)

I've loads of rubberised plastic going sticky, honing tool, power tools, remote controls, joysticks, mice, audio equipment

After around 15 years the oil breaks down and leeches to the surface.

Have you had a look at a used Xbox elite controller?
I haven't (assuming that was directed at me), but just had a look on't bay and it seems any under ~£50 are in pretty poor condition. If I'm gonna spend that much then based on this thread I'd probably go with the Cyclone (and would generally prefer new), but was more hoping for something in the £25-30 range....

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C falls into that range, along with some of the lower EasySMX or GameSir models.

Is the 2C worthwhile? (@ anyone)

In the market for a new controller only thing didn't like the look of on the G7 is that dpad.
