EV general discussion

SORN/don't drive it and rent for 10 days?
Take the bus?
Taxi?
Borrow a family members car and get put on their insurance?
Sadly I am committed to take a group of us to Gatwick airport on 17th April and leave it there over the weekend, so I need a good sized car to do that and can't deprive my pensioner parents of a car.

It’s real world experience. I’d need to sit in my car for 8h a week. How much are 11kw chargers in Ireland. They aren’t cheap here

It’s quite a change going from a 5min fill

Cheapest is about 0.43/kWh to 0.36/kWh (UK Currency)

There are people who just use a granny cable. Some people make it work and don't find it inconvenient.

For me having an EV isn't primarily about fuel saving. It's just better suited to mostly short urban trips we do. Especially in Winter you can jump into a pre heated car. Charge at home, nicer driving in heavy traffic. Less maintenance etc.

Cost of public charging or time taken or range is mostly irrelevant to me. Everyone will be different.

if gv70 is still in your owsnership don't you need to renew it anyway .. and just re-aasign to ix3 when it arrives with refund pro-ratad.
(what you do when you change car mid year)

I assuming the following is because of oil/petrol prices.

On a random impulse (I'm not in the market for another 6 months), I got a WBAC valuation for my KIA EV6 on the 28th march (a week ago today) which came back with £19940

4 days later i got an unprompted "your valuation has improved", with a new quote of £20675

Today I got another unprompted "your valuation has improved", and it's now £21415.

Are 2nd hand EV prices generally increasing ?
Another unprompted email today, £21660.

He's got a diesel he averages 42.5MPG on 10400 miles so the fuel cost is £2058 per year at 1.85l. Same mileage in the car he is suggesting with be 4mpkWH, so £572 is using the supercharger near him off-peak - so £123 a month less or £28.57 a week. Or to put it another way before tax he need nearly a £2000 pay rise to be on the same money without caring about the loss.

Just to add to this perhaps we could start a new business like Deliveroo, but people being paid to take your car to a charger, even if you paid someone £13 an hour, once a week for 1.5 hours to go and charge you car you'd still be saving ~£500 over the year. Based on the above pricing. So big oil get less and people gain employment, win-win. :D

Fuel is currently £1.85/l, if it drops to pre Iran conflict levels that drops the saving by £500. There is also the question of why that MPG is so low but I'll assume it is due to short trips which don't really suit a diesel.

If my reverse maths are correct that means the Tesla chargers are 22p/kWh? If so I'll fully admit that is way cheaper than I was expecting. What times can you get those rates?

Between 2200-0800

The ones closet to me are 23p from 11pm until 9am, and the other nearish ones are 21p from 10pm to 8am, and 27p from 8pm, dropping to 22p at 11pm until 8am.

Yeah, my daily trips now are 5miles 4 times a day, a diesel isn’t the best for me any more

Circumstances change. There is no denying an EV wouldn't be better suited to those trips but, IMHO, the hassle way outweighs the potential savings. I thought I was missing something with the Tesla supercharging rates but do you really want to be getting up an hour early, or sitting in a grim motorway services car park until midnight just to fuel your car?

Or you know, not going late and going early? Also they aren't all in motorway services one nearest me is at a massive shopping mall. I am glad you think £1500 is small change though, I mean if you are 100% busy all of the time and never watch TV or read a book, things you can do at any point in the car that isn't moving.

Just saw the latest SMMT registration data for March, nearly 87k BEV's registered, up over 24% YoY and that is pre-Iran chaos - I wonder what will happen this month.

PHEV also up 46% and China being number 1 in month and second year to date are also big headlines.

"Worst of both worlds" PHEV up 46.9% to nearly 50000

Gap is closing between plug in and non plug in cars though.

You mean like I said when I referenced getting up an hour early?

Cool your jets, I was citing the one posted and the fact that a quick search showed all the ones in Newcastle being at services. I don't think a massive shopping mall is particularly relevant if you are there before it opens or after it closes.

I wouldn't say £1500 is small change but I would say that getting to a charger at 7am or 11pm at night is a massive inconvenience.

We can have different opinions though. Personally, and maybe it's just me but between me getting up at 7:10 and me finally sitting down to kick my feet up at about 21:00 I don't have massive amounts of free time (I can get away with posting on here but I can't really kick back and take in a movie in the office ;) ). If come the time that I needed to charge and I'm stood there with the prospect of watching TV for another half an hour then going to bed or jumping in the car, driving to the local Moto and sitting there staring at my phone, then driving back home and going to bed late annoying my wife in the process... I think I'd pick the easy life and save £4 a day by making my own sandwiches for work or some other changes that wouldn't impact me in the slightest.

If you genuinely think that frequenting your local Moto services at 11pm to save £4 a day is the way to go though then you keep banging that drum.
