EV general discussion

So, as anyone on this thread knows I take a keen interest in my EV’s efficiency and range, especially as I’m now on my third one.

Having tested the EQE on a commuting week and gotten all 5 shifts (300 miles) with 24 miles of range left, I was intrigued to see what a proper motorway journey would bring.

Last week I drove from Gloucester to Prestwick with a small detour to see my parents :D near Preston - total distance would be 366 miles. I was never making that in one go anyway but a bit of playing around with ABRP and ZapMap gave me a plan which involved me getting to Cairn Lodge Services on the A74, which hosted a rapid Westmorland charging setup (same company as Tebay and Gloucester services!)

Normally, I would do this sort of nonsense as if have family in the car, and always charge when stopping for pee/food/rest etc. When it’s just me, I have free reign to drive like a moron and be THAT sort of EV driver that everyone else THINKS you drive like… :D

To make it more interesting, I recently discovered the car has an inbuilt dashcam, and just requires a USB C drive in the correct format to record. One old SSD later and I have days worth of recording space as it’s only 1080p. Add in my GoPro to record the dash (poorly) and it’s made a fun video!

The final figures:

Got to my parent’s house at 160 miles on 4 mpkwh (which is the 250 whpm on the dash because Mercedes refuse to use the figures everyone else does) but an average speed of 34mph because it was a Friday afternoon on the M6…

Got to the charging station right on 320 miles with 2% battery left (I wasn’t scared, honest) and the increase in average speed to 44mph over the whole distance had dropped the efficiency to 275 whpm or 3.63 mpkwh.

I left it on the rapid charger for 30 minutes while I got snacks and did the last 40 miles cross country to the hotel at Prestwick.

Beast of a journey with all the traffic but ridiculously easy in the EQE with adaptive cruise, air suspension and nappa leather. Cruise was set to 70 and only rarely was that exceeded to get passed others.

Return journey this Sunday!
As an EV-less person for the time being, I have nothing useful to respond with on your efficiency and range story, but there's just something satisfying about watching a timelapse on driving, especially when it got a bit more scenic towards the end of yours!

My Ohme is still charging sometimes in small chunks say 10 mins and according to Octopus if it only charges for 10 mins it uses up a complete 30 min chunk as they allocate each charge in 30 min chunks.

They don’t seem to have an answer either and have switched to the new 6 hour limit knowing that this is an issue. It means you only actually get 6 hours if your car charges constantly for 6 hours anything under still takes up a 30 min chunk off your 6 hours.

Think I might look at OVO or someone else as Octopus are not very helpful and tbh don’t particularly give a toss.

Nice to see my little town getting a mention.
Hope you enjoyed Prestfest!

No, it tracks charging time and billing slots separately. This works in your favour. If it charges for 10 minutes you use 10 minutes of your charge cap and get 30 minutes of cheap rate electricity for your home.

The woman on the phone today said it does not work like that and if it charges for 10 mins it will use a complete half hour slot. You are only billed for the 10 mins of charge but you loose the 20 mins from that half hour of cheap charging. ? I said that it did not sound right but they were adamant that’s how it works and that Ohme is to blame for the small charging windows.

Will have to just see what happens on the app.

Unfortunately you’re expecting far too much from first line support.

Yes I know it seems like employees should know about the products they are employed to talks about but it’s 2026 and they work in a call centre for minimum wage.

The customer services staff on the phones are not tariff technicality experts, stop listening to them for this sort of detail and you'll give yourself a lot less stress.

It's on the website in black and white, you're worrying about nothing.

Apparently they transferred me to one of them lol.

No worries points taken as above it’s there written down so all good.

I thought it was split this way so your home no longer gets 7p outside of the off peak period.

I found the fits and starts of the new 6 hour thing annoying, so I just set it to be ready after 6 hrs after I plug it in then it just charges in one go, rather than 30 mins here there and every where.

Your home still gets the 7p electricity outside of the standard overnight period of your car is charging if you are within the 6 hour cap and it’s always cheap overnight for hour house.

Octopus CS are hilariously bad at knowing what they're actually selling in my experience. Their use of AI doesn't help as they end up answering something vaguely connected but in no way what you actually asked.

It’s not really any different to anywhere else.

I recently had an experience speaking to someone from the ISA team at a well known bank who was adamant you couldn’t transfer in money from another ISA if you had already used your annual allowance which is of course incorrect.

These people are literally paid to provide customer support for these products but so few of them actually use them so they don’t have a clue how they work in practice. But the above question is covered in the Q&A so it’s probably just incompetence in practice.

I suppose I just expect slightly better from the company that effectively built and licence the whole setup to other companies.

Kraken was spun out of Octopus a while ago which makes sense.

Its customers didn’t really like that they were funding a competitors energy company when they were a consolidated unit and energy was the larger of the two businesses units.

My OHME Home Pro has stopped talking to the car yet again so it always shows the car as having 0% charge. This was how it all started last time so hopefully it won't start staying offline next. Surely I can't be so unlucky to need a second replacement? CS is useless as usual. I really wish I went for the other brand that I was offered at the time!!

I never bothered trying to link my car to the charger, Ohme users groups on Facebook etc. are just full of people having problems with vehicle integration, it was easy enough to just pay attention to remaining battery and 'add 60%' or whatever was needed myself and never worry about whether it could talk to the car or not.

Me too, for both our cars, i5 and R5.
