EV general discussion

Thanks, these are the sort of things that would put me off if they are a hassle / annoying as you just want these things to just work.

The Polestars have a rep for buggy software so I wouldn’t personally have them on the list.

Going from an M8 I think you’d struggle to find anything but a BMW a nice car.

Maybe a newer Taycan with the better range?

Brakes on other VAG products are vague and have no feel until you push hard through the regen.

Always makes me laugh when you see people driving them, where it looks like they’ve suddenly stamped on the brakes - I had this happen all the time on the ID 7 and 4.

Happened recently to a guy coming up to a roundabout I was on. I could see the panic in his face as he was trying to brake but couldn’t, and suddenly emergency stop :P

I do love the look of that Polestar 5, I personally prefer to own smaller cars but I keep getting drawn to these luxobarges I wouldn't be able to park anywhere near me.

For me the EV I desire most is the new Renault 5 3E Turbo, my mate has one on order in a custom colour scheme and was shocked that he is expecting final cost to be close to circa 200k.
Still for me as far as EV's go when I see one of these at an event or PR, it turns me into a small child again, the original Renault 5 Turbo's have a similar impact, yet funnily enough as a teenager I was firmly in the Peugeot 205 camp and owned like 4 of them, never owned an R5 Turbo, but feel with age the R5 is now more iconic than 205 GTi.

Does anyone here who is more into their EV's know if the new R5 Turbo is a platform shared with any other EV or have Renault simply gone to town and built their own thing, hence somewhat justification for the 150k ish starting price.

Far rather this over say a Lotus Evija, Denza, BYD U9, Porsche GTS and other EV supercar/hypercar class.

The 2 matured a lot post launch, dunno about the newer models.

Seems to be a thing with a lot of newer cars but especially EVs with the increased integration and features included - sadly coding and designing good software, and responsively fixing issues, takes talent, a certain type of person and business culture. There seems to be an increasing mindset (and not just limited to vehicles) where you have OTA, etc. of "we can fix it later" kind of thing.

They have gone mental with the Turbo 3E thats for sure. Tri Motor so two at rear is similar to the A390 but not sure how much compares. I assume the cell chemistry is also power richer that normal stuff.

Carbo composite body will be a big driver of the costs aswell. (1450kg with 70Wh battery is special) - The A390 with longer wheelbase is 89kWh for example.

EDIT : ah okay its only two IN WHEEL motors at the rear - so thats pretty nuts. Looks like its the first real production run for the ProteanDrive units.

I don't know but I seem to remember in a video on it they said it wasn't the same platform as the standard 5 despite the name and not a shared platform - but I might be getting that wrong as it wasn't something I had a reason to take much notice of.

My mate at works got a Polestar 3, of all the EV's people have at work (BMW i4/i5, multiple Audis, MB's -- we work in the NHS, everyone loves a salary sacrifice car.....) it's the one that's had the most issues resulting in (i'd estimate/recollect) 9/10 visits to the dealers or call outs to home.

They're limited production too aren't they? That's always good for adding an extra 0 onto the headline price

Picked it up today, very pleased. It handles and drives so much better than the iX and seat comfort is much improved.

The acceleration in this thing is really strong. I think BMW have it 0-62 in 3.8 but many have timed it at 3.3.
Make sure you set up the launch control properly, from memory you need to adjust the Sport profile setting to turn something off. Then give it a try, the party trick of it vibrating when you're holding it on the brake with the accelerator floored is funny!

Having not driven one without the adaptive m suspension pro, would be interesting to find out how much difference a £4k option makes to the driving response (essentially anti roll stabilisation tech) as i'm not sure i'd be able to tell the difference unless your track driving it.

I would be quite happy with a Taycan turbo but I have an aversion to the made up Porsche tax, where they charge you over a grand to service the car because it includes clearing of drain holes. I dont have a problem paying that sort of money for servicing (I paid that for the M8), I just dont like how they have made up a way to fleece the customer because they cant legitimately charge for a car with barely any moving parts so they make stuff up.

I agree with that, but you don’t need to have it serviced by Porsche, unless you’re wanting to keep it in warranty?

It’s a lot of faff though and would personally put me off a Taycan/Macan/Cayenne

1980 units globally.
I was invited to the launch event in the UK. I ummed and ahhhed about it for a few weeks, but couldn't bring myself to spend that amount of money when you could have something with far more pedigree and a big V12 as a toy/weekend car.

Porsche Panamera was on my list, but i gave up the will to live with the options lists and I thought to myself i'll have FOMO in case i get the car and there's something i hadn't specced. :D

That is indeed the issue, it is a car for die hard R5 fan with money or the multi-millionaire to add to a collection.

As you say even in todays world of fast increasing prices 150k will still buy you a 600 LT, V12 Ferrari, Lambo and as cool as the R5 will be, well you can't beat a highly tuned V8, V10 or V12, though the R5 3E will probably hold its money, will be interesting as it will be first limited EV that is desired so will be interested to see where used prices go. Will people be rushing to pay scalpers for one or will they quickly depreciate towards 70-120k price levels.....

how are the homologated 6r4 prices standing up ?
alpha junior velocee doesn't seem to have too much respect in the second hand market
