Genuine question - does this sort of motoring not bother you? Do you ask yourself if its worth the hassle of driving around in an old Proton wondering when it will be time to throw it in the bin and buy something equally horrid?

If you just wanted 'some wheels' then you can lease a rubbishy 107 or something for £99 a month and forget about it, without the worry of driving around in a decrepid Proton.

I've nothing against old cars, heck mine is rapidly becoming one, but I'm really not sure £100 cars are worth the faff.

But £99 a month for a fixed length of time is more of a faff than a £100 car that lasts a month or two.

I'd rather spend £500 on a car that lasts a year though. That makes more sense.

Protons are awful though.
They just about do as taxis in Malaysia, but using one as a daily over here must be so depressing :(

So if you are the second owner of a 1 year old car it is shed?

*disclaimer* Does not apply for cars under 5 years old :p

But in the case of a 6 year old car with 8 owners you get 6/8 = 0.75 so shed.

This is of course a load of crud i dreamt up on my lunch break.

OK - maybe not 10p but broken down there's no way there is 35k in parts there.

What are you talking about?

Who would break it into parts when it's one of the best examples of it's kind in the world? You're paying that much because cars in that condition are pretty much non-existent.

Either you're trolling or you need to have words with yourself.

Had it for over a year now and its not let me down...i only need a car for driving the wife and kids around, i prefer the hayabusa. The most expensive car i have had in the last few years was a £250 escort.

Personally I do not see the point in spending several thousands pounds on a runabout when something older can do the job just as well for a fraction of the money.

I'd personally aim for something better than a old proton and £500 seems to buy something that'll run for a year.

As for a £99 a month 107 or such like that'll be about £3.5k over the normal 3 year lease period. For the massive price difference I'd rather have a crappy proton. Or Just spend £2k on a modern Mondeo and have something that looks respectable and should be fairly reliable.

I presume you sit in your front room on a deckchair, watch a 14" portable television, wear jeans from a charity shop and holiday in Bognor Regis as well?

No?

So why the different thinking with cars? The term 'runabout' is odd. It suggests a car used for driving to work and going to town and visiting friends is somehow different from a normal car.

I have a 'runabout'. It's called.. my car.

Are people who get these £300 cars into cars at all? I dont see any problems in someone who drives A-B and doesnt care in what but some of us actually like cars so want to get something good.

Its like a massive PC geek having a 10 year old PC.

but you wouldnt take your runabout out on the weekend purely to enjoy the drive.

Thats where the term "runabout" comes from. Runabout to ues mon - fri to drive about it in, then an elise or something very focused to go out and drive on a weekend for no other reason than to enjoy the drive.

Agreed with Fox and stoke1863. GF has a £400 306 1.4L. She really isn't into cars at all, and wanted something very cheap, so it really doesn't matter what she gets as long as it works.

For people who are into cars or aspire to do 50 in a McDonalds drive-thru however, may be a different story.

Yea but 90% of the people who have 'just a runabout' dont have an Elise. They have.. just the 'runabout'. So surely it isnt a 'runabout' at all, its... a car.

Seems to be used as an excuse for having something a bit pants, when in reality you shouldnt need to find an excuse.
