Bangernomics

Are people who get these £300 cars into cars at all? I dont see any problems in someone who drives A-B and doesnt care in what but some of us actually like cars so want to get something good.

Its like a massive PC geek having a 10 year old PC.

Except that that comparison doesn't work at all.

A cheap used car can be just as much fun, drive just as well, be just as comfortable as something costing ten times as much.

A 10 year old PC will not run today's programs, and those that it can will run like **** and it'll generally be so slow that it's just unproductive.

There's nothing to say that a sub £1000 car has to be boring, bland, or crap. Just like there's nothing to say that a brand new £15,000 car will be awesome to drive, comfy as hell and a pleasure to use.

Its mis using the term then. Which i guess was the point you were getting at in the first place.

Yes. Munchers old Golf is a runabout, because in his garage is a supercharged Vauxhall VX220.

Whereas that guys Proton isn't a runabout - its his car. Just like the Volvo is yours.

Nothing wrong with being into certain things. Lopez loves his older cars. But I just think its a bit strange to chose to drive a £200 heap of crap and then go around saying how you just cannot understand why anyone would do anything but... drive a £200 heap of crap

but you wouldnt take your runabout out on the weekend purely to enjoy the drive.

Why not? I drive a crap x reg Focus with is probably worth a grand and a bit. I know the type of bangernomic money we're talking about is probably less than this but I feel I can comment on this issue.
I love the drive on the A13 from Essex into London despite me having a relatively crap car compared to some of the higher marks on these boards. I wouldn't enjoy the drive less if I was in a Rover Metro. Hell, I've done the same drive in a 92' Vauxhall Nova, and it was fine.

But there are some restrictions. I wouldn't for example, drive a Rover Metro or similar from say London to Edinburgh.

I presume you sit in your front room on a deckchair, watch a 14" portable television, wear jeans from a charity shop and holiday in Bognor Regis as well?

No?

So why the different thinking with cars? The term 'runabout' is odd. It suggests a car used for driving to work and going to town and visiting friends is somehow different from a normal car.

I have a 'runabout'. It's called.. my car.

I'm talking strictly about "runabouts" here. White goods to transport people from A To B as easily as possible. For most of the population pottering along to work a £800 1998 Mondeo will offer a very similar driving experience to a £8,000 2008 Mondeo.

No? I would. On more than one occasion I've found myself bored in the evening/at night and the weather has been adverse so I've been out for a drive in the Honda :D

I agree with Fox though, I don't call it a runaround, it's my "daily" if anything.

Not convinced.

Try to prove that point - pick something relatively cheap that you feel demonstrates your point. I will then, with 10 times the "budget", show you something that is more fun and comfortable

but your not driving for the enjoyment of driving are you ?

you are driving for the thrill of being outside and looking at scenery. Your not actually enjoying the thrill of speed and involvement with the car, revelling in the gear changes and listenning to the engine..

You dont do that in an old focus, well if you do good luck to you as the volvo bores me to death, despite having a 260bhp 5 cylinder turbo.

But that's not my point. Yes, there are cars that are more fun and more comfortable for ten times the budget, OBVIOUSLY, but there are many cars that aren't.

I do! I love driving and try to make the most out of anything which I'm behind the wheel of.

Here's the problem I have with a lot of people's attitude toward old/banger cars (and this isn't a dig at you, just generalising). Just becuase a car is crap doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. You'll be suprised at how fast 60 feels like in an old Nova.

You dont do that in an old focus, well if you do good luck to you as the volvo bores me to death, despite having a 260bhp 5 cylinder turbo.

That's a different story though isn't it. You went from a mapped Vectra VXR pumping M3 equivalent figures to the 260bhp Volvo. Naturally, you'd expect things which you've already had, but aren't there - speed. I think you need to lower your expectations and enjoy what the Volvo has to offer (again, not a personal dig). :)

You could it in a £900 BMW 740i though. Or a V8 Honda Legend. But that's not Bangernomics.

Its not for sale so dont ask:D

All the people saying " i drive a 15 year old xx"

Do you actually care about cars though? Lots of people just dont care what they drive thats fine they better things to spend money on. Thats not a dig in anyway.

But for people who like cars why on earth would they choose to drive the worst possible car?

I care what I drive. I can afford to buy, but can't afford to run a higher spec car so choose to stay with my car until funds become available. I can do an intermediate upgrade to a car which is better than mine and isn't as expensive to run as some of the higher end products, but then it means money is spent away from my goal - having a newerr nice saloon with power and luxury.
