Bangernomics

Yep, I drive a 15 year old diesel Golf which has really seen better days and done 225,000 miles, have had it for 4 years and it just refuses to die!

I think I might qualify, My first 4 cars were less than £1000.

Total shed of a Fiesta, sold it because it was a total abortion of a car. Broke down every week :(
Rover 416, base spec, mould on one seat :p £600, cost zero to run.
Rover 420 diesel, good spec, £700 to buy, cost £100 for 20,000 miles motoring.
Rover 620ti, broke down a couple of times but all fixed cheaply. 200bhp barge for £1000? Win.

I like this game :p

35k for an 18 year old Escort?! I know its a cossie but really - remove the engine and running gear and its worth 10p.

I think you'll find a low mileage rolling shell from an Escort Cosworth is worth rather more than 10p. It isn't really an Escort - it's a bespoke car built on the Sierra platform, it simply looks like an Escort, only the rear light clusters are actual Escort parts.

£185 Rover 418 TD. Bought it with 11 months tax. wrote it off. Cashed in the tax, sold a few parts. made me back enough to buy

£220 vauxhall cavalier 1.6

stolen and written off. was utterly brassic, and had zero no claims anyway, so claimed, and got £350!

£100 Volvo 440 1.8. Ran for 18 months. needed 3 litres of water every 20 miles in the last month, luckily i worked 10 miles from home.

i'm a grown up for the last 3 years - 51 focus 2.0

Anyone here practice the art of Bangernomics, or are you all a bunch of snobs?

Proton persona 1.6 here...£185 and it came with 10 months mot and 5 months tax...and a full tank of fuel...it will last to the end of june and then i will find something else.

The local *****/scrap collector offered me £80 for it last week.

Genuine question - does this sort of motoring not bother you? Do you ask yourself if its worth the hassle of driving around in an old Proton wondering when it will be time to throw it in the bin and buy something equally horrid?

If you just wanted 'some wheels' then you can lease a rubbishy 107 or something for £99 a month and forget about it, without the worry of driving around in a decrepid Proton.

I've nothing against old cars, heck mine is rapidly becoming one, but I'm really not sure £100 cars are worth the faff.

I'd love the idea buying whatever 200-300€ car with a month or 2 MOT left, and completely ragging it into the ground/scrapyard, not having to worry where to leave it, being able to park near MPV's, other bangers and women, etc...

Eg. a 300€ escort with all 4 doors in a different color and drive everywhere bouncing off the rev limiter, drawing tyre marks, etc :D. Then write it off by crashing ''accidentally'' into a speed camera.

Oh, and by now I guess you all know but I agree completely with :
Could not give 2 craps about what it took to make the car I drive or the "effect" on the environment.

OK - maybe not 10p but broken down there's no way there is 35k in parts there.

That also leads me to my next question. Why would a car like that be sitting in a garage 247 when it was made to be driven... and stolen? Taking it to shows with mirrors underneath is a sad way of life for such a car.

Simple test of if a car is a banger or not.

Age / Number of owners = Condition.

10+ Excellent condition
5-9.9 Very good condition
3-4.9 Good condition
2-2.9 Average
1-1.9 Poor
0-0.9 Shed

;)

So if you are the second owner of a 1 year old car it is shed?

Think he meant:

10+ Shed
5-9.9 Poor
3-4.9 Average

:p.

Yup, driving a £500 mk2 mondeo I got off ebay. There is some joy to be had about owning a car that you don't care so much about as long as it runs.
