Got a quote for my house to be recarpeted from a decent local company, how does it sound?

105sq m (Lounge, dining room, stairs, hall way and 3 bedrooms) for £2900 inc vat

This was for living in but i may end up selling the place soon, all carpets need replacing really as ive decorated/cut carpet for painting skirting/ old owners carpeted around furniture (?!)

Details :

Devotion carpet at £14 /m2
11mm blue heaven £5.5 /m2
Fitting inc staircase surcharge £3.5/m2
all plus vat

Pluse an extra £50 to remove of the old carpet and insulaton (sounds strangely low)

Hey,

sounds expensive to me.

Carpet is a bit of an enigmatic matter to be honest; there's lots of smoke-and-mirrors used by vendors to hide what they're actually selling - you will end up buying something mediocre but still pay good money for it. you can often end up paying twice or 3 times as mush as the value of the product as a result.

my advice would be to find an independent fitter who will do a *fitting only* service. buy the carpet and underlay yourself - you will save a fortune. (even then, the fitter will usually provide grippers and transitiions)

105sqm is a huge area; you should be seeing better price breaks than you are I think.

your carpet:
this is where they get you - carpet salesmen give carpets their own names, carpet-right are the worst[read: best] for doing this, but in your case they seem to have used a recognized part name 'devotion' As soon as I saw the price / m2 you quoted I thought to myself 'I bet it cost half that' - and I might not be wrong - a quick google sugegsts that it's a regency care free carpet and has a value of around £6.99/m2

there's only a handful of people that make carpets, and between these two places:
http://www.allfloorsexpress.co.uk/
http://www.carpetyourroom.co.uk/
[ironically, the one you're looking for isn't on there]

you should be able to get nearly any carpet you can find on the high street - if you've fallen in love with a carpet in carpet-right, there's a few threads on some flooring forums with the 'real' names fro them [not the fake made-up names carpet-right gives them] CarpetYourRoom.co.uk should be able to advise here too as they sell the same ones.

your underlay:
I'm hoping it's PU foam underlay, it probably will be at 11mm, but it's just a made-up name. as a benchmark, cloud 9 cumulus 11mm underlay is considered one of the best on the market and is proper branded stuff. it costs about £2.89/m2 here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cloud-9-C...FittedCarpets_Underlay_SM&hash=item5d4e8415d6

your fitting:
at 3.50/m2 that's a little higher than most of the quotes I've had. even carpet-right only charge £3/m2
I'm surprised they haven't quoted a little less considering the markup on the rest of it.

OMG the VAT -
hadn't realised until now you're quoting VAT free prices. wow.

a recent example I put together for a friend who was in a similar position and about to buy a carpet from carpet right, I showed him what I was paying for a 100% wool carpet compared to what I would have been charged for the same thing.

as a quick breakdown in cost, for me to carpet a roughly 15m2 room is going to cost me:
£179 for the carpet + £20 delivery
£43 for the underlay
£40 for fitting by a local, independent carpet fitter who will supply the grippers (which, by the way are pennies and often used as a bargaining tool )

total = £282

going 'local', assuming full list price - they would in all honesty knock some off though) would cost me:
£480 for the carpet
£134 for the underlay
£60 for fitting

total = £674

this isn't something 'similar' it's *exactly the same wool carpet* made by Kingsmead, if it's for sale, you ca find it!

now, I know this is a bit of a cut-throat thing to do and it's nice to support local vendors etc, and in as many cases as I can, I do... but flooring retailers make my skin crawl! I'm all for paying a local fitter all day long, but if I have the option of getting the materials myself I will!

good luck mate, hope you can get that price down - a lot!

forgot to mention -
you may not be but if anyone else reading this is stuck trying to find a carpet they have seen somewhere - usually they change the name of the carpet but not the colour and code. the name of the colour is usually unique to that particular carpet, so it's a good way to find an alternative / crosscheck you're right.

Thanks for the time to reply - I guess southern prices kicking in s other people i have asked said that it sounds about right

Im tempted to sort the underlay myself. Blue heaven is a proper brand similar to cloud 9, it is PU foam. Ive found that online for 2.66 a square metre and as i need 105m thats exactly 7 rolls.

I went back to ask for just dining room and lounge 42 m2 but as this was lower volume of carpet purchase so wanted £1300!

Think i will do more shopping about and then think about getting all online and find a cash fitter

no worries mate, hope you get sorted! it's just glorified box moving at the end of the day - you will probably still have to get all the gear delivered to your house before it's fitted anyway so get it yourself!

I went to a carpet shop recently and they do fitting and cloud 9 underlay for £5m2.

You could save £50 by disposing of the carpet yourself. But for that amount I'd be tempted to let them do it.

That's pricey. You should be looking at half that for a polypropylene carpet fully fitted and around the £2300 mark for 100% wool. Prices exclude VAT.
For 105m2 you wouldn't need that much underlay either so if you can buy it by the metre rather than the roll for the same price do that. I'd say 93m2 would be plenty.

If I had your house plans, I could do you an exact cut plan and quantity guide. (This is my day job...I live in a world of beige)

Underlay and fitting you can work out a price from the quantity however the carpet you need to work out the cuts to get an accurate measure. It could be significantly more.

Also vice versa the quantity you have been given could be the total carpet required not carpet laid so don't use that quantity to work out the underlay and fitting.

Get underlay from here: http://tradepriced.co.uk/

Shop around for carpet, there's some local shops that will be a much better price than £14.99psqm

I'm paying £2.50psqm for fitting, so again, ring around £3psqm is the norm I think.

I missed out on an unreal deal on my carpet, was £15.99 for carpet, underlay and fitting. The guy hung himself 1 week before I was about to get it put down :(

Great thread. We've just started the carpet hunt for our place and after seeing the ridiculous prices, I'm certainly doing the underlay and gripper rods myself.

Has anyone actually fitted their own carpet before? It looks relatively simple and all of the rooms that are getting carpet are a manageable size (around 16sqm), would I be nuts to attempt it myself?

Depends how good at DIY you are?

My dad taught me how to lay a carpet, and he's by no means a carpet fitter (he wouldn't attempt the hallway/stairs/landing though). It was a straight forward square room, i'd probably say between 20-30 sqm. The hardest part was getting the carpet into the room and aligning it to ensure you weren't left short on any of the 4 sides.

Takes a bit of patience, and you need the right tools (carpet stretcher and a good sharp knife).

I'd try my hand at almost anything, uually to learn new things as well as saving money - but fitting carpet - I can't see the point.
The last quote I had for a 15m2 room was £40, and that was supply and fitting of grippers, fitting underlay and carpet (which I provide, he has no problem with that) he also measures up and tells me exactly how much to order so nothing is left to chance.
So yea, at that kind of money I'd rather someone else did it! It's not something I'd want to try my self any time soon!

Thanks for the very helpful post. I need to carpet my study which is 55m2 and was getting quotes at 1.5k

Just a reference we're having four bedrooms (roughly 45m2) done by an independent. Tredaire 9mm PU underlay, carpet and fitting all in for £1000. Carpet is Associated Weavers Temptation, going rate for it seems to be anywhere between £15-25psqm.
