Carpet

Great thread, ive ordered some Cloud 9 11mm and some gripers, so much cheaper! Carpet Right wanted £8.99 sqm for 10mm undlerlay!

Im going to get someone to fit the carpet but do the gripers and underlay myself. Does anyone know of a good guide for laying it and fitting the gripers? like how far away from the wall should the gripers be? where do you put them on the stairs? do you need them down the sides as well? etc

fwiw I'd get a quote from your fitter to do it - might only be a few quid. the preference for where the grippers go could be based on the underlay, skirting and carpet pile.
what's the subfloor? if it's concrete they tend to pull all the floor-fixing-nails out the grippers and then cut them into little 4" or 6" strips and grip-fill them to the sub-floor. if it's a wooden subfloor then they get nailed.

Subbed to this. Thanks RB Customs, this info will come in great use when we eventually replace our carpets!
no probs, you're welcome :) glad it's helpful.

I got grippers and underlay included in the price of my carpet fitting @ £2.50psqm

I wouldn't tackle this particular thing yourself, and poorly laid underlay will ruin your carpet experience!

Great thread. We've just started the carpet hunt for our place and after seeing the ridiculous prices, I'm certainly doing the underlay and gripper rods myself.

Has anyone actually fitted their own carpet before? It looks relatively simple and all of the rooms that are getting carpet are a manageable size (around 16sqm), would I be nuts to attempt it myself?

Stairs are the safety critical thing to get right. Also ensuring that the underlay at the edges is done right or things go wrinkly over time.

I know a family in the business so my view point is slightly skewed.

Busy time of year for fitting carpets (June is similar) and some suppliers are struggling to get it in due to low supply hence price increase.

I have 300 rolls in our warehouse (basic 8mm PU that we supply a standard to new builds) as I learned my lesson from last year.

I ended up using an independent place and ended up coming in at only slightly higher than I could do DIYing the whole lot so I decided to give them the business. Avoid carpetright is my experience.

RB Customs - Thankyou for your post. Very helpful and very interesting.

I found the carpet we have in a lot of our house for just £9.99/sqm (or at least it looks like it!) (http://www.allfloorsexpress.co.uk/c...ale-harvest-100-wool-berber-cream-carpet-p810)

Looking back through invoices which at the time were by far the cheapest we could find using a local small outlet which we thought we were being clever by using over the big sheds, we paid more like £20/sqm including fitting (but exc underlay)

We'll be wiser next time if we can get fitting for around £3/sqm :(

Bit of a resurrection here. I've managed to find a couple of carpets I'm interested in from some local retailers However I can't find the codes mentioned to figure out who actually supplies them.

One is the Manx ecodesigns in pistachio.

The other is just called Sensations and the colour is coral white.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
