That's pretty much what they're doing, something like 7-9 million new trees planted by HS2 to help offset some of the loss and make the project 'greener'. They're unlikely to be planted directly along the route due to the effect of leaf fall on tracks and the risk of falling trees/branches.
I guess the counter argument would be that you can't replant ancient woodland, or recreate those habitats you destroy along the route (despite new ones being created too).
Probably for the average person, but then the point of HS2 is more about the effect it has on the existing lines which are a lot more affordable (but still not great).

I don't understand why she would even be in the running for a NBP prize, her focus is climate stuff, not peace stuff.

Had to Google him, can't see the man on the Clapham omnibus being riveted and elated by this decision. Not exactly Henry Kissenger, but looking at the list of Nobel Peace Prize winners from say 1970 to date I'd wager few people could name more than 5 or 6 of them, from memory. I tend to view most with as much gravitas as Eurovision Song Contest winners and can recall a similar amount!
