If you are buying the land for HS2, Why can you not plant trees alongside the route? Surely in places they had to buy the field to get acess so plant trees to offset the railways carbon footprint? Trees will also form a barrier to help catch the brake dust and pollution that goes airborne and causes health issues too.

That's pretty much what they're doing, something like 7-9 million new trees planted by HS2 to help offset some of the loss and make the project 'greener'. They're unlikely to be planted directly along the route due to the effect of leaf fall on tracks and the risk of falling trees/branches.

I guess the counter argument would be that you can't replant ancient woodland, or recreate those habitats you destroy along the route (despite new ones being created too).

Probably for the average person, but then the point of HS2 is more about the effect it has on the existing lines which are a lot more affordable (but still not great).
 
I don't understand why she would even be in the running for a NBP prize, her focus is climate stuff, not peace stuff.

Had to Google him, can't see the man on the Clapham omnibus being riveted and elated by this decision. Not exactly Henry Kissenger, but looking at the list of Nobel Peace Prize winners from say 1970 to date I'd wager few people could name more than 5 or 6 of them, from memory. I tend to view most with as much gravitas as Eurovision Song Contest winners and can recall a similar amount!
 
Watched some more of her stuff, seems like it was her idea in first place, parents somewhat opposed as school. Yet we are all saying she's 'controlled' by 'lefties', maybe not as we think.

It's perfectly possible that the agenda behind the scenes has changed since she went viral and it became more obvious that she can be used as a tool.

Bono is on the One Campaign's board of directors, along with raging hardcore communist David Cameron. But Bill Gates and George Soros are not.
