Time Capsule

I assume everyone knows that it's quite possible to get time machine to back up to any old NAS. I do and it works fine. Just google for it....

I've thought over ordering a time capsule and in the end, having an airport extreme base station already I just can't justify it...I have my wireless print server, I have a NAS with any attached USB drive (and time machine can be made to back up to it) and i have wifi - what benefit does it have.

That said, if you don't already have a base station...

Same as me. I'm not buying..

Currently I connect to the AirPort Extreme with several devices (AirPort Express, PS3, PSP, Wii, Mrs' Laptop, iMac and iPhone) and through it I can print wirelessly with zero effort.

I have a Western Digital MyBook Pro (500GB) sat here for backups, and it's Firewire 800 so it's exponentially faster than any wireless solution. I'm not interested in regular backups.. all my music is already on said disk, and all important documents are purged to my iDisk when I save them.

The final factor (for me) was that my base station is literally 3 or 4 months old, and I can't justify the extra layout for what I already have.

Where do you set that?!?!

Sorry about the delay.. been dying with Tonsillitis :(

I've done the "default write" command and it can now see my 1TB RAID5 array *evil grin* however I only have 20GB free on the array and 60GB used on the MBP..

I think it may be time to get brutal.. then plug the MGP into direct into the array by gigabit copper for the initial heavy backup.

I've heard there's some fixes for TM in the next release so... I may and wait til then to backup.

Got to get me one of these when I have some spare cash in March as I never backup my MacBook or PC and I am fed up of having to restart my Linksys wireless router. Nor does it have N so transferring large files means I have to go upstairs and plug my MacBook in via a wire.

I really should get the house wired up for CAT5e/6

I don't suppose anyone knows how easy it is to get the hard drive out of these things?

Two reasons;

1. Upgrade the harddrive to a bigger capacity at a later date.
2. Should the harddrive fail, I would want to get it out and dispose of it properly
without ruining the machine

Thanks.

It'll be taken apart by Engadget or Gizmodo as soon as the review units are out in the wild.

I can't imagine it'd be harder than taking apart the Mac Mini :)

Apple Store still says 'Ships February' ! But when, does anyone have an idea ?
I want one :D

Cool. I was under the impression they were already out. :o

I'm still considering at the moment. Two main drawbacks for me is I would have to set it up independently of my main router which is tied to my ISP (Sky, I know it can be done but I dont want to start messing with hacks). This would basically mean I couldnt surf the web and back up at the same time. Not too much of a problem when the initial backup is complete I suppose.

Second drawback is security. As I understand it Time Machine literally just dumps the files on there so anyone with access to it has easy pickings of all your files. I suppose I could get round that by keeping documents in a secure image because I've heard TM doesn't play that nicely with FileVault.

These problems would apply to any NAS I'm just looking at TimeCapsule specifically for the Time Machine integration.

Could do what I'm gonna do & keep the exiting router, using the Time Capsule as a Access Point/NAS (with Time machine support). http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1358601&tstart=15

I've mentioned countless times that the Time Machine is a ACCESS POINT.

It has no modem inside it whatsoever.. if it's plugged in next to your modem, or 50 feet away, it's going to be plugged in via CAT5/6 regardless.

Also, you can choose to "advertise" the Capsule to WAN (aka The 'net) or require a password from users who wish to access it.

I can't see any security risks personally.

I'd have thought you could easily get a linux encryption driver to make a volume encrypted, then use TM as per normal onto the encrypted volume. Sure people could use your timemachine but externally it would be encrypted.
