Time Capsule

Not sure what you mean by the second bit, but it's just a hard drive, files all appear as files.

As in, when you see a file on the NAS say collegework.doc
Can you open it via your windows MS office, edit it and then save it or does it get copied into your windows PC, you edit it and essentially load it back to the NAS an be replaced?

You just edit and save it as you would any other document. Not sure what youre talking about loading and replacing stuff , thats not needed.

The inner workings are explained here

Just annoyed I bought an Airport Basestation a few months ago now.

Doesnt seem bad value at all. Think I may be tempted to get on in a few weeks.

It's just something about it that doesn't make sense in my tiny brain... I'll get around it, soon~

PC --------x TCx -------- Mac
TCx -------- PC
Macx ------- xTC

TC formatted as HFS in this example, as you see, it takes the HFS data (x) and turns it into sexeh lines (-) that, Just Work™.

still a shame that you have to connect a modem to it, would have been nice, to have it all in one.
For example would love to get rid of my homehub and would be great to get atme capsule, but not if i have to use my homehub infront of it!

Maybe, but, I, for one absolutely love the modem in my Linksys WAG200G. The beast can hold onto the connection with 0 and below SNR!

This is the only reason I wont be buying it. If only Apple could integrate a BB modem like most other 'all-in-one' routers then I would snap it up without a seconds though and sell my WD MyBook Pro and my NetGear DG834N. However, the lack of built in modem really puts me off.

vvv Dr Jones makes a valid point and it makes sense I suppose but it still bugs me.

Only because it needs to cater for both ADSL and Cable users... - in a way, it's good, means you don't have to get tied down to either ADSL or Cable in the future....

Edit: and thanks guys for trying to explain the whole how NAS bridge between 2 systems with different file system. Not entirely understood but I kinda got the idea of it now... :)

Doesn't matter, it's a NAS, it's accessed by either SMB or NFS or similar, the formatting of the drive doesn't matter at all...

You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. The formatting issue has been putting me of NAS for ages, and now im kicking myself at how stupid i was.

Heres an interesting question, lets take the usb on the time capsule (or any NAS supporting usb expansion) and whack a powered usb hub on it, would pluggin multiple usb hdd's into that allow even further expansion? Probably at a loss of performance, but you could feasibly have a big ol NAS box for not much dollar.

It looks interesting if you were considering an Airport Extreme. I need a NAS but I have the router and wifi bit all sorted out.

I did laugh at "server grade" though. They don't make 1TB SAS drives :)

Yea, I was wondering what the heck is a server-grade HDD? Just faster RPM?

Anyway, if you've got the wifi/router sorted out, you can still just plug it in via the Cat5(?) port, no? I'm guessing you've got your wireless internet sorted at home, the Time Capsule don't have a modem in it, you need to connect in via a Cat5 port.

I have;

Speedtouch 546 modem in the bedroom -> CAT6 through the house -> AirPort Extreme in Living room.

Off the AE I have my Canon Pixma MP610, so I can't use my MyBook Pro with the AE (As it only has 1 USB port).

...this Time Capsule would sort it :)

I'm interested in this. Nice form factor although I'm very concerned that it does not offer the chance for mirroring/RAID as it will be running 24/7.

Currently I have a six drive 1TB RAID5 array. However it's normally switched off nowdays to save the environment..

Simple it is, a good one stop way to ensure people at least back up stuff.. I'm not sure how quick I'd burn through 500GB.

Basically, regardless of what is on the NAS, the data is sent from it to your PC in binary, and that means regardless of the file format of the receiver (or sender) the data always is the same.

So you can have an HFS machine, FAT32 machine, NTFS Machine and a ZFS machine, and they will all send and receive files from themselves to the NAS and understand them all.

Yup, that's how I've finally come to understand :)

Depending on how much porn you've got and want to backup :p
