Weekend Football 21/22 & 23rd ***SPOILERS***

Fergie probably couldn't sleep when he drew JM, I think it'll be a great game.

Arsenal and Chelsea are a mess at the moment to be honest, the former can't score and the latter have no tactics yet really, you need them against Italian sides.

RM are playing really well and Liverpool aren't.

The only side I would put money on getting through is Arsenal oddly:)

Initially I thought Liverpool would be ok, but considering Real are is scintillating form, should be a good game. Chelsea is a difficult one to call, but if he plays Anelka ahead of Drogba i'll cry because he is so much better. Arsenal should be ok, and Man United is pretty difficult but I think their form will carry them through (touch wood).

Hiddink is just there as a favor to his friend, he doesn't have any goals or long term aims for the club.
He's not supposed to have any long-term aims! That's the point. He's there for six months, to mend any rifts in the camp, get the players playing well again, and steady the ship. He'll almost certainly have no involvement in transfers or contracts, and the former won't be possible for the planned period he's there anyway.

Ray is there for the stay, he could have used his time in charge to bring youngsters through, try new tactics and show that the team is together, Roman thinks that hiring a new manager every time he isn't getting what he wants is the answer.
How is he "there for the stay" any more than Hiddink? He was only appointed assistant manager after Clarke left a few months ago, so he's hardly old-school.

And try new tactics and blood youngsters? When they're in danger of losing their CL spot? Madness.

Chelsea need someone to stabilise the ship and get some wins. Someone with a proven pedigree at a high level. Not Ray "I got QPR relegated" Wilkins.

Every pundit in the country has said its a penalty, most fans in the country say its a penalty and even a fair few people in this thread have said its a penalty. It seems the only people who don't think its a penalty are United fans, which I suppose it understandable. The simple fact is that Rafael made minimal contact and put Pedersen off balance and we know for a fact that if it had been the other way around or if Pedersen had been a Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea player it would have been a straight pen.

you don't know for a fact it would have been a penalty the other way. you can speculate but that's it.

And Pedersen didn't. Surely he has to if its not a penalty?

While in that situation i'd have thought there would be a call one way or the other the referee can decide that someone has fallen or tripped not dived.

Thanks for reminding me why I rarely post in these threads. The lack of civility from some United fans is astonishing and if you can't be bothered to discuss the game without being petty I can't be bothered to humour you any more than I already have.

chuffed with a point against Everton today, wasn't expecting it

Haven't seen the tackle, but I fully accept how bad it sounds, and hope the FA take action against Nolan, stupid boy, we can't afford suspensions on midfielders

...Not Ray "I got QPR relegated" Wilkins.

I was talking about him today with a mate.
When we re-employed him he suddenly became Mr Chelsea, he immediately had his polished head and tracksuit with RW on all over the press and kept mentioning 'us' in interviews even though he'd done nothing.
I can't imagine him inspiring or threatening anyone in the dressing room and all the players must just see him as a daft old uncle who you try to avoid.

I agree with the speculation but you can't ignore the fact that the majority feel it was a definite penalty. For a club like Blackburn though who are fighting for our survival these decisions are a lot bigger for us. United have arguable already won the title and given the problems currently plaguing the other 3 of the big 4 i'd wager now that they will take it. A point against United or even a win would have been fantastic for us but for me the ref has botched 2 major decisions, he's not sent Ronaldo off for kicking out (who has then gone on to score the winner) and he has not awarded a penalty for a foul on Pedersen.

As for the tripping, Rafael makes contact. Due to that factor the referee has only two options to choose from, penalty or dive. If Pedersen trips it is due to Rafaels intervention.

Toon solid at the back today Visionary? Or just lucky

Give me feedback!:D

Was a weird game, Everton in the 2nd half never looked like scoring. Bassong had Jo in his pocket. That was the reason I came on to post, Garth Crooks has Jagielka and Baines in the candidates for his team of the week but no Bassong.

If Nolan hadn't been sent off we would've won when Martins and Jonas came on, as it was Martins hardly got any service (we were playing for the draw really) and Jonas was no where near his best.

Glad Everton didn't win today, they could have been 2 points behind us. We would have been battling for UEFA cup sport, not a Champions League spot!

It saddens me deeply to think we're nearer the former, not the latter.

I've just been watching the Inter vs Ac highlights. My word we're toothless upfront. I'm hoping there's going to be a backlash of goals soon, would be nice if Roma are the victims. :(

regarding the penalty - it was a dive. But it was also a penalty.
Rafael makes slight contact.
Regardless of Pederson being off balanced etc, this contact is clearly not enough to force him to the ground.
He has chosen to go down.
So as I say, it's a dive.
But - Rafael could have no complaints if it had been given because his arms gone out.
The problem as usual, is consistency.
Personally I would have no problem with either any of such contact being an automatic penalty or instead we allow some slight coming together.
But it needs to be one or the other, all the time.

What continues to annoy me is the way so many will see this decision as further proof of bias for MU at Old Trafford.
There will be no mention of the goal disallowed. Or the one against Derby that was fine (because after all, if theres any doubt of offside - shouldn't the decision favour the attacking side? And I'm pretty certain the linesman can't have been certain).
Nor will they mention all the good penalty claims we have had turned down either.
The fact is, the way every big decision is replayed over and over has resulted in most officials being reluctant to award any penalty, unless they are 100% certain.
Likewise, they wont allow any hint of offside which might lead to a goal.
They are afraid of being proven to have got it wrong, so are very conservative.
This effects all teams, not just one.

3 decisions. You conveniently forget the disallowed goal that would have won it once and for all.

And tripping isn't exactly the right word, as for it to be a tripping, he'd have to be tripped. Theres no suggestion that it was even anything vaguely like a trip. No one went near his legs. The only question is, did Rafael push or pull him with his hand on his shoulder, but as he didn't fall forward or back, he couldn't have done. Pedersen made the wrong decision and tried to get a penalty instead of shooting.

Touché. But in fairness Pedersen went down like he had been shot from 2 yards away with a fifty-cal, not touched on the shoulder by a 12 year old-lookalike.

Should have been a free kick actually. But that's got nothing to do with it, the goal was scored perfectly legitimately.

The goal was disallowed for a Ronaldo push on Nelsen iirc. Evans did nothing wrong.

I'm not denying he went down lightly but 9 out of 10 of those decisions are given. Its just frustrating ours was the 1.
