Zero, you got incapped about 50 feet away from a drop point - I was the only one who could come back for you - one hunter, smoker or jockey and I'd have been dead too - sorry! I did apologise in chat - tough call, but our team sucked donkey nuts, they needed my help :D

Awww TFU team no show for the match :(

Message would have been nice rather than just disappearing offline a few minutes before.

hey guys, never played a l4d game ever apart from a quick demo about a year ago, just got l4d2, anyone up for playing and not mind being with someone who is most likely going to play terrible :P

thanks

wonder if anyone can help me out, im getting a lot of lag, maybe its my wireless connection, its got full bars though, im enjoying the game but my ping is varying between 100-800 in every game and is just lagging and is probably ruining the game for the other players on the team. I dont have a problem with lag in MMORPGS and RTS games, this is the first FPS ive instaslled on this newer computer, maybe the poor connection is just more noticeable with FPS games.

Any tips? I cant seem to be able to pick the game with a good connection like you do in a lot of FPS games.

thanks

Firstly, a wired connection is preferable for online play to a wireless so run a wire to your router if you can. Make sure any programs which would be utilising the internet are closed, especially anything which uses p2p since they can really be a bandwidth hog if not configured correctly.

Also, go to www.speedtest.net, run the test and show us what you get.

I play over wireless and it's fine here. First thing I'd suggest is download InSSIDer and check what wireless channel you're using and that it doesn't conflict with a neighbours. Also I found a lot of stuttering in most Source based games with I had Multicore rendering enabled so I turned that off. it's in the advanced graphics settings. The advice about other programs is also good.

I also play L4D2 over wireless and have zero problems.

Tom91x91, as a test, try going into L4D2 and at the menu screen open the console (enabled in the options) by pressing the key above Tab and to the left of 1 (usually called the tilde key). Type openserverbrowser and sort the list of lobbies by ping. Finally try joining the top server with the lowest ping (usually sub 50ms) and see if you still notice any lag.

If you still notice lag, then it's likely your own net connection, in which case try doing what MissChief and Antar Bolaeisk said to try and pin point the cause.

download 7.21mb, ping 530ms

not conflicting with neighbours, will try the suggestion and join a low ping server.

edit: cant see where to enable the console in l4d2 :S

L4D2 over wireless I think can be a little hit and miss... I have friends that are hate being on wireless while playing, will even sit on the floor to get a good ping.

I myself have my desk right next to the router so that I can have a wired connection :)

That ping is pretty bad, you may want to look into fixing that first. You need a ping of at least 60ms or below for any online first person shooter game to not feel laggy.

For comparison, this is what I get from that speedtest site and I'm using wireless on a floor above the router and through about 4 walls:

To enable to console in L4D2, start the game and when you get to the menu, click on "Options" and then go to "Keyboard/Mouse". In the next screen, just set the "Allow Developer Console" option to Enabled and you're done.

Back in the main menu, open the console with the tilde key (the key directly above Tab and to the left of 1) and type "openserverbrowser" without the quotes and it should bring up the window shown below:

From there, just sort the Latency (ping) column and try joining the server with the lowest ping. Play for a while and see if you get any lag.

It's likely you will if that online speedtest is any indication, so as others have said, try either testing a direct internet connection with a cable to your router or fiddle about with your wifi channels/signal.

ok i just restarted the modem, most basic thing ever to try :P and the ping has gone down to 59, so im hoping it was just that, will test it out again.

edit: nah its gone right back up again, lag even worse now, sounds like it might be a problem on virgin medias end. Lowest ping in the server browser is 700.
