Yes. Just play the campaign (i.e. not single player), and you will be addded to a public game, which will other people who are also playing. (I only ever play pub games, as I don't have enough Steam friends).

You could also start up your own online game, and people will join you once you get started.

See the OcUK Steam Names list in my sig if you find yourself friendless. Add yourself then add a random selection of people to your friends list from the names list. My advice would be to add names closer to the bottom as they tend to be people who have bought the game more recently.
 
Anyone else find it difficult to connect to decent public servers? I've had excruciatingly long load times, disconnects and I'm really not a fan of the random server match-up thing. I wish it would be sensible and connect me to nearby UK servers rather than Russia, and that is using 'Quick Match' where there should be plenty of choice.

Pain in the *** sometimes, just want to jump into a game and get going :(

Other than that, fantastic game...

I'm not sure how much it'll help, but you can try the "openserverbrowser" approach to connect to low latency games as mentioned in my previous post here. You should be looking for ideally under 50ms ping servers, but under 100ms is usually also OK.
 
Depends if they're using official dedicated or not, more often than not those servers suck.

Though i've never used quick match because of the overwhelming number of easy/normal games.
 
I'm finding Advanced is just the right mix of difficult and you need to keep your wits about you and satisfying when you complete the campaign you're doing. Expert I just find a total grind and Normal is easy mode these days.
 
I enjoy accusing people of hacking on pub servers. It's best when it's team mates and they are adamant that they are not. It's a great struggle to convince the rest of the team that he does. But when it's successful its great. Obviously I debrief everyone afterwards- it would be unethical to perform this experiment without doing so.

Managed to out one guy. "I hacked in counter-strike, but that's it! And only 'cuz everyone did."

New l4d2 mutation update has turned into a 6.3gb ****ing update, ie, redownloading the entire game, which means it won't be done until Sunday, if i'm lucky!
 
Has anyone here been playing the "Helms Deep Reborn" survival map? Absolutely ace... This is what survival maps *should* have been like. Epic scale, with several 'stages' that you can fall back to if you become overwhelmed. Great stuff!
 
i remember it from l4d1 we just sat up a tower with billions fo mfire cans and tanks.


didn't last long because that much fire/explosives in a small space and steve = a noisy and fiery death.
 
Did they fix it? I remember if you retreated (or just stayed) inside then only specials would attack you which basically meant only Tanks would live for more than 2 seconds and if you went towards the tower only Tanks would make it there.

Was good fun shooting witches on the battlefield from the tower :p
 
It's "fixed" in that everything attacks you as expected. But, if you have a half-decent team, once you get all the way back to the keep (opens at 14mins 30s) then you can pretty much hold it indefinitely. If you get overwhelmed then falling back to the giant spiral staircase will usually buy you another 10 mins or so.


On an unrelated note - I fell through the floor of the elevator on No Mercy twice today :(

Feel free to use the OcUK servers. Branded as LTUK they're listed in the original post of this thread. :)
 
Pretty sure it is yes. I didn't really recall what character i was when it happened the first time but i was definitely Zoey the 2nd time and so was the player i saw it happen to the 3rd time. Don't think it has anything to do with healing. I was alt tabbed while riding the elevator and came back when people were asking wtf was going on Mumble in time to see myself glitching through the floor before falling to my death.
 
Anyone else seem to find l4d servers always have at least one idiot on them?

I was playing versus and did a smoker pull. No one saw the guy and he got incapped. Then I got the last guy standing - end of round. The next thing I see, someones starting to vote me off! I'd only just joined the server so it can't have been I was playing rubbish or uncooperatively. Then we exchanged a few pleasant words and I decided to leave as I can't stand being in a server with hostile gamers.

I'm sick of the voting system. It gets abused more times than it comes in handy. I know you should just ignore people but it's very frustrating. Earlier today someone tried to vote me off while I was the highest scoring infected that round.

I really like l4d, think it's a great game but find it's being totally ruined by arrogant hostile gamers. It's even worse than counterstrike ffs!
